FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH AUGUST 22, 2012 WINCHESTER, VA.
VOL. 73 NO. 15
A Loving & Caring Church Transforming God’s Vision Into Action
Our oldest granddaughter starts to kindergarten in a few days. Natalie is excited,
and looking forward to getting started. I’m not sure how excited our daughter-in-
law is about the idea. That happens when children start school.
It reminds me of many years ago when our son Bryan started the first grade. It
was his first day being in school for the full day. Jonathan began his first day in
preschool at the same time.
I remember having mixed emotions as I watched them head out the door, down the sidewalk, and
toward the car. I was thankful to have two healthy, happy children who seemed to enjoy who they
were and what they did. I felt a little afraid in thinking about what they might have to face in the
years to come, given the uncertainty of the times.
But most of all, I remember being amazed at how fast they had begun to grow-up and do things for
themselves and accept the challenge of certain responsibilities. At that time, “I want to do it
myself” was a familiar sentence in our home.
One thought, though, brought me comfort that first day of school for my sons, and now the first day
for Natalie. Just because the boys are grown and the granddaughters are growing up and getting
older doesn’t mean I’m getting any older. Despite the white hair and creaking joints, I’m still as
young as ever!
(The things we do to try and make ourselves feel better.)
Please pray for all our students as they begin the new school year. From preschoolers to college
students, adjusting to a new year can bring some anxious moments. Pray also for teachers, aides,
and administrators as they, too, settle into their routines. May it be a good year of learning and
growth for all.

Thursday Morning Bible Study
What ever happened to the disciples
after Jesus’ Ascension to Heaven?
How did early Christianity survive
persecution and eventually become the official
religion of the Roman Empire? How did early
Christians worship? These and many other questions
will be answered as the first three centuries of
Christianity will be studied in the fall Thursday
morning Bible study. Sessions will meet from 10:00
to 11:30 on six Thursday mornings, beginning on
September 13th. There will be no cost, but pre-
registration would be helpful. Please call the
church office to register (662-5367). The session
will be led by Bob Stainback and Lori Pendleton.
Thank you to my church family for
your love as shown in your many
kind expressions of sympathy after the
death of my mother, Marie Butler. You
have made the past few months so
much easier. A special thanks to
George and Lori for the service which
was so appropriate and caring.

Facilities Use Policies and Procedures to be Developed
The Administrative Management Committee (AMC) has determined that the church would benefit from documented guidelines for the use of church property (including buildings and vehicles) by church members, outside groups or individuals. Therefore, the Facilities Use Policies and Procedures (FUPP) manual is being developed.
The following factors will be addressed:
1. Coordination. How can the use of facilities among various user groups best be prioritized and coordinated? What is the process for requesting reservation/usage? What tracking information needs to be collected and who needs access to this information?
2. Responsibility. What are the various responsibilities of users and of church staff with respect to use of church facilities?
3. Cost. Who should bear the operational expenses of facilities use? 4. Liability. What liability exists? Who should bear the risk of physical damage or personal
injury related to facilities use? 5. Security. How can the security of church buildings and contents, and the safety of
occupants, best be assured?
Development of the FUPP will be a multi-month undertaking and will require input from many church members, church staff and other parties. AMC members will be contacting people in certain positions to solicit input, but we welcome ideas and suggestions from everyone. Think about how our facilities are used, when, and by whom. What issues have you experienced with respect to use of church property? What suggestions do you have? In what ways can a written policy help us to address the five factors listed above?
You are encouraged to contact Kimberli Ball at 540-662-4055 or [email protected] to share your thoughts. Kim may direct you to another committee member handling the specific area of your concern. Note that the FUPP will not address the Hunting Ridge Retreat property.
The Facilities Use Policies and Procedures will be presented to the Church for approval at a quarterly business meeting in early 2013. Thank you for your thoughtful and prayerful consideration of the issues involved in helping us be good stewards of the facilities with which
we have been blessed.
Back to School
Early one morning, a mother woke her son, who whined
about having to go to school.
“Give me two reasons why you don’t want to go,” she said.
“Well,” he complained, “the kids don’t like me, and neither
do the teachers!”
“Nonsense,” she said. “Come get ready.”
“Give me two reasons why I should go,” the son protested.
“Well, for one, you’re 52,” she said. “For another, you’re
the principal!” ** reprinted from the July 25th Tie where the punch line was erroneously omitted

Is Your All on the Altar?
You have longed for sweet-peace
And for faith to increase,
And have earnestly, fervently prayed;
But you cannot have rest
Or be perfectly blest
Until all on the altar is laid.
Would you walk with the Lord
In the light of His word,
And have peace and contentment always;
You must do His sweet will
To be free from all ill,
On the altar your all you must lay.
Oh, we never can know
What the Lord will bestow
Of the blessings for which we have prayed,
Till our body and soul
He doth fully control,
And all on the altar is laid.
Who can tell all the love
He will send from above,
And how happy our hearts will be made,
Of the fellowship sweet
We shall share at His feet
When our all on the altar is laid.
Is your all on the altar of sacrifice laid?
Your heart, does the Spirit control?
You can only be blest
And have peace and sweet rest,
As you yield Him your body and soul.

Maternity Clothes Needed
AbbaCare has put out a request for much needed summer maternity clothes. If you have any to contribute, please bring them to the Church Office and we will make sure they get to AbbaCare.
Storm and Snow Support Needed
As a result of the storms
of this summer, the
AMC is developing a list
of church members
(men, women, youth) who could be called upon
to assist in cleaning up the grounds after
damaging storms. This same list of helpers will
be used to put out a call for help in shoveling
snow during winter months. Persons on the list
won't be obligated to help at any time, but this
will provide the AMC with a database of church
members to email, call or text after such
events. The burden for such work should not
fall only on AMC members. The more helpers
who come out to assist, the less time and effort
will be required of any one person. Thank you!
Please advise AMC Vice-Chair Jamie Pendleton

Coming this Winter: White Christmas Retrospective
Serving our community through the White Christmas program has been an important ministry of First Baptist Winchester for 80+ years. As part of our upcoming anniversary recognition, we will recognize the special role of White Christmas in our church’s history. Your help is needed! Do you have Angel ornaments from our White Christmas trees of years past which we can borrow to display? How about photos, notes, newspaper clippings or other White Christmas mementos? Please contact Kim Ball at 540-662-4055 or [email protected]. Also, please advise Kim if you served as a White Christmas
co-chairperson in the past.
