A. THE JEWS OF THE UNITED STATES
A total of 4,228,000 Jews reside in the United Statesaccording to the estimates prepared at the end of 1927.1 TheJewish inhabitants live in every state of the Union and arewidely distributed, within the states. Of the total numberof Jews, 4,077,000 live in 8l71 primary communities, eachone having 1 congregation or more, and the remaining151,000 Jews reside in places without forming permanentcongregations. These subordinate communities are foundin as many as 1,691 urban places and in 7,235 rural incor-porated places and rural unincorporated districts. Of the871 primary communities, 85 are rural.
The proportion of Jews to the total population variesbetween 16.67% in the state of New York and 0.21% inthe state of Idaho. As for the communities, the Jews con-stitute 11.11% of the total population of the cities of 100,000or over in the country; 3.11% of the total population of thecities of 100,000 to 25,000; and between 1.61% and 0.71%of the total population of the other classes of urban places;and the percentage of Jews of the total rural population isvery small, being 0.48% of those in rural incorporated and0.15% of those in rural unincorporated places. However,in the 3950 rural incorporated places having Jews, the latterconstitute 1.37% of the total population of those places and1.76% of the total population of the unincorporated areashaving Jews.
The number of Jews in the Outlying Possessions of theUnited States is very small.2
In 1917, the number of Jews in the country was estimatedat 3,389,000, and in 1877, at 229,000. The earliest esti-mate of the number of Jews in the country is said to be thatof Mordecai M. Noah in 1818, who claimed that there wereat that time 3,000 Jews in the country. In 1848, M. A.Berk estimated the number of Jews as 50,000.

• For cities in the United States, see pp. 374-375' It should be borne in mind that the figures for the number of Jews arrived at on
the basis of a religious or nationality census, are minima. This is partly due to the factthat there is sometimes a tendency on the part of census enumerators to minimize thenumber of persons of a minority religion or nationality, and partly because some Jewsreport their nationality as that of the majority population, or decline to answer thequestion as to religion or nationality. For example, in the 1921 census of Czecho-slovakia as many as 724,507 persons refused to give their religious affiliation. Thenumber of Jews for that country given in this article does not include the possiblenumber of Jews among those that refused to give their religious affiliation.
' Exclusive of Europeans.
STATISTICS OF JEWS 383
C. IMMIGRATION OF JEWS TO THEUNITED STATES
4. DURING THE YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 1933
Admissions and Departures.—During the year endedJune 30, 1933, a total of 2,372 Jewish immigrants wereadmitted to the United States, about 400 less than thepreceding year (2,755). During the same period, 384 Jewsemigrated from the country. The net increase throughimmigration, was thus 1,988.
Deportations and Debarments.—During the fiscal year, ended June 30, 1933, a total of 138 Jews previously admittedwere deported, and 276 applying for admission were debarred. The former number represents 6.94% of the net increaseof Jewish immigrants over emigrants, while the numberof debarred constitutes 11.64% of those admitted. Whilethese percentages are somewhat higher than in previousyears, reflecting no doubt a more stringent administrationof the law, yet they are considerably lower than the per-centages for the immigration as a whole, for we find thatthe percentage of all debarments to all admissions was23.96%. As in the foregoing year, there can be no com-parison regarding deportations for the year ended June30, 1933, because there was an actual net decrease of 57,013created by an excess of departures over admissions. In1931 however, when the percentage of all deportations tonet increase was as high as 51.46%, the percentage of Jewsdeported was only 2.79% of the excess of Jews admittedover those who departed.
Countries of Origin.—Of the 2,372 Jews admitted duringthe fiscal year ended June 30, 1933 almost three-fifths(57.29%) came from a group of adjacent countries in centralEurope in which live almost half of the total number ofJews in the world.1 Of the remaining 1,013, nearly half(491) came from Canada, 130 from Cuba, 99 from Mexico,72 from Germany, and 41 from Palestine.
•Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Austria, Czecho-Slovakia, Hungary, Roumania, Russia.
384 AMERICAN JEWISH YEAR BOOK
On the other hand, only less than one-eighth (11.78%)of the total number of immigrants came from the countriesof Central Europe which contributed one-half of the Jewishimmigrants, while seven-eighths (87.23%) of the total camefrom the countries which contributed the remaining two-fifths of the Jewish immigrants.
Destination of Immigrants.—Jewish immigrants to theUnited States during the fiscal year were destined to thirty-eight states and the District of Columbia, the states rankinghighest being New York, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania,New Jersey, California, Massachusetts, in the order given.
Sex.—Of the total number of Jewish immigrants admittedduring the fiscal year, 48.69% were males, and 51.31% werefemales, as compared with 39.96% and 60.04% respectivelyfor the total number of immigrants.
Age.—-The Jewish immigration differed but slightly fromthe total in the matter of age distribution. Of the totalnumber of Jewish immigrants, 15.89% were children under16 years of age, 67.08% were persons between 16 and 44,and 17.03% were 45 years or over; in the total immigrationthe proportion of persons 45 years and over (16.92%) waspractically the same as in the Jewish group, while the per-centage of those from 16 to 44 years of age 65.17% wasslightly lower and the proportion of children 17.91% inthe total immigration was slightly higher than in theJewish immigration.
Conjugal Condition.—Among the Jewish immigrants therewere proportionately a smaller number of single personsand a larger number of married persons, than were foundamong the immigration as a whole, the percentages beingrespectively 38.62% single, and 55.31% married, amongthe Jews, as compared with 41.84% and 51.36% in thetotal; the proportions of widowed and divorced personswer2 also slightly lower in the Jewish group (5.65% widowedand 0.42% divorced among the Jews as compared with6.33% widowed and 0.47% divorced for the total).
Family Character of Jewish Immigration.—The differ-ences in age grouping and in conjugal condition of theJewish immigration from the total indicate that the Jewishimmigration is more largely of a family character. This is
STATISTICS OF JEWS 385
also evident from the fact that 93.97% of the Jewishimmigrants came to join relatives as compared with 83.92%for the total immigration; and only 3.5% of the Jewishimmigrants had neither relatives nor friends here, as com-pared with 9.76% for the total number of immigrants.
Financial Condition.—The Jewish immigrants (10.28%of the total) brought in 9.19% of the aggregate amount ofmoney shown to be in the possession of all the immigrants, but whereas fully three-quarters (75.84%) of the totalimmigrants showed the possession of money, only a littleover two-thirds (69.31%) of the Jews did so,—anotherreflection of the family character of the Jewish immigration.
2. DURING THE SIX MONTHS, JULY-DECEMBER, 1933
For the fiscal year which ended June 30, 1934, completeofficial figures for only the first six months were availableat the time this article was written. These figures showthat the number of Jews admitted during this period, 1,571,was 10.47% of the total immigration and that Jewishimmigrants exceeded Jewish emigrants by 1,369; whereasthe general emigration showed an excess of 9,437 depar-tures over admissions. The proportion of Jews debarredduring the six months was slightly lower than for the pre-ceding fiscal year. (4.50% during the six months, comparedwith 4.99% during the preceding year); while the propor-tion of Jews deported was considerably higher (1.36%during July-December, as against 0.69% during the pre-ceding fiscal year).
3. FROM 1881 TO 1933
Of the earlier waves of Jewish immigration to the UnitedStates, which were made up chiefly of immigrants fromSpain, Portugal, and Holland, and from Germany, noreliable statistics are available. Such statistics were recordedonly beginning in 1881, but these are not complete for theentire period since then. For the seventeen years from 1881to 1898, we have statistics only for the number of Jewsadmitted at the ports of New York, Philadelphia, and
386 AMERICAN JEWISH YEAR BOOK
Baltimore. For the next eight years (1899-1907) we havefigures for the number of Jews admitted at all ports. It isonly since 1908 that statistics of departures as well as ofarrivals have been recorded.
Notwithstanding these" deficiencies and gaps, we are in aposition to arrive at an approximate figure for the totalJewish immigration since 1881. From 1908, when thenumber of departures began to be recorded, up to 1914, afterwhich the World War and restrictive legislation interruptedthe free flow of immigration, the percentage of Jews depart-ing to those admitted was 7.14%. We may assume that thesame percentage held good during the period 1899-1907 forwhich we have complete figures for Jewish admissions. Ifthis assumption is correct, the number of Jews admittedduring those years totalled 829,244. For the period from1881-1898 we have figures only for Jews admitted at theports of New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. We mayperhaps assume that the number of departures during thoseyears equalled the number of admissions a t other ports; inother words, that the total number of Jews admitted at allports equalled the number admitted at the three portsmentioned, namely, 533,478. Adding the net increases forthese two periods, thus arrived at, to the net increase from1908 to 1933, for which official statistics are available, wefind that the total net increase of the Jewish population ofthe United States as a result of, immigration was 2,335,559for the fifty-three years from 1881 to 1933.
