Overall ObjectivesDemonstrate innovative approaches and mechanisms based on appropriate technological inputs that enhance sustainable local livelihoods for local and indigenous communities living around Protected Areas (PAs) across the country.
Enhance impacts and sustainability of the initiatives through facilitation of learning and sharing of lessons within and between community groups, NGOs, government agencies and the private sector.
Support and build capacity of NGOs and CBOs, including field based institutions implementing these initiatives for enhancing links between conservation and sustainable livelihoods, as well as relevant PA authorities.
VisionEvolve technology led diverse scalable field models to address conservation vis-à-vis livelihood issues around Protected Areas.

13 Protected Areas from different ecosystems along with 12 field based implementing agencies were identified for Phase 1 (2007-2010). A total of 50 villages/hamlets located in tribal regions were covered under Phase 1 with a population of around 25000. More than 3750 households have been involved directly in the programme. Overall, the programme has engaged with over 66 (existing) institutions and created around 60 new groups/institutions.

Additional Objectives:
4 Provide site specific energy solutions by using appropriate technology to reduce biotic pressure4 Develop an understanding of human wildlife conflict issuess at selected sites and pilot mitigation measures
The 2nd phase of the programme was launched in 2014 for a duration of 3 years with 15 partners working with communities living in and around 16 Protected Areas having diverse ecosystems. A total of 75 villages/ hamlets located in tribal regions have been covered with a population of around 30000 individuals. The programme has been implemented in 13 States and 1 U.T. covering more than 4000 households.
