Orion Base and Extended versions are our newest Safety Light Curtains The Orion Base models cover 80% of the industrial applications. The Orion Extended models give us added functionality and diagnostics.
We have set the List Price on Orion to be slightly less than the previous Focus II light curtains. Making us able to beat out the competition.
We have continued the J1 (0.6) discount multiplier to our distributors.
Orion Safety Light CurtainsLight Curtain Applications
Orion Light GuardsHow are they used?
Orion Light GuardsProtected height
The minimum installation distance between a safety device and the dangerous zone is ruled by standards. How close to the machine a light guard can be mounted depends (among other things) on:- The resolution of the light guard - The response time of the light guardUsually, the lower the resolution, the closer to the machine the optical device can be mounted.
Orion Light GuardsMinimum installation distance - EN ISO 13855 & 13857

Muting:
• Temporary bypass of the optical device.
• Sensors to detect the difference between the goods and a person.
Override:
Function that forces the OSSD outputs ON, e.g. when the goods have stopped in the detection field.
Orion Light GuardsExtended – Muting & Override
• Some beams can be obstructed all the time
• Fixed or floating blanking

Orion Light GuardsExtended - Range Selection
• When multiple Safety Light Curtains are in line of sight, cross talk can cause nuisance trips.
• Orion Extended has a selectable range function. This allows light curtains which are in close proximity to each other and beam coded not to have an effect on ones farther away.
Long Range 20/7m Short Range 12/4m
30mm Resolution 14mm Resolution

Orion Light GuardsExtended - Scan Code
• This function is useful when two Orion Extended Safety Light Curtsains have to be installed at a distance that is shorter than the minimum allowed distance with both receivers on the same side. The two AOPDs are then configured with two different codes so that they don’t cross talk with each other.
• Temporary bypass of the optical device.
• Sensors to make the difference between the goods and a person.
Orion Light GuardsExtended - Muting
© ABB Inc. November 25, 2015 | Slide 44
Orion Light GuardsExtended - Muting
Muting is the temporary automatically controlled deactivation of the function of a safeguarding device during a portion of the systems cycle.
• Personnel are not exposed to the hazard.
• The hazard cannot be accessed without a stop being initiated.
• Must be consistent with the safety circuit performance.
• Muting sensors must be arranged in a fashion as not to be defeated by simple means.
• Muting sensors and muting lamp must be monitored by the safety system.
• Muting features are only available if a 20-300mA lamp is connected.
© ABB Inc. November 25, 2015 | Slide 45
• Two muting sensors arranged in an X pattern allows bi-directional transport of material.
• Muting sensor A must be N/O and muting sensor B must be N/C and can be sensors or limit switches.
• Either mute sensor can be activated first or both at the same time to initiate the mute.
• There is not maximum time limit for muting in the X program.
• Push button selectable
Orion Light GuardsExtended - X Muting
© ABB Inc. November 25, 2015 | Slide 46
Orion Light GuardsExtended - T Muting
• Four muting sensors wired as pairs allow bi-directional transport of material.
• Both mute sensors (A) must be wired together into Orion input “muting A”.
• Both mute sensors (B) must be wired together into Orion input “muting B”.
• Muting Sensors must both be Normally Open and can be sensors or limit switches.
• Sensor A must be activated before Sensor B (30ms) and a maximum mute time is 600s.
• Push button selectable
© ABB Inc. November 25, 2015 | Slide 47
Orion Light GuardsExtended - L Muting
• Two muting sensors wired in sequence and the use of the Orion Light Curtain as a third mute sensor allows unidirectional transport of material.
• Muting can only occur if material is exiting the Light Curtain from the cell.
• Muting Sensors must both be Normally Open and can be sensors or limit switches.
• Sensor A must be activated before Sensor B (30ms) and a maximum mute time is 600s.
• Fixed blanking allows a fixed portion of the detection zone (i.e. a fixed set of beams) to be occupied, while all the other beams operate normally.
• In Fixed blanking, the beams of the blanked zone have to remain interrupted, otherwise the OSSD outputs of the Orion switch off.
• Fixed blanking can be combined with Floating blanking; at least one synchronization beam must be free.
• Up to two zones can be set as blanking zones.
Orion Light GuardsExtended - Fixed Blanking
1: part that always block the beams 2: area that needs additional mechanical guard
The blanking zone is defined through a Teach-in operation: the user keeps the TEACH IN normally open contact(pin 4 of the M12-12 pole connector on the receiver) pressed for at least 3 s while the object(s) that should be allowedto be in the detection zone is/are present in the zone to be blanked. The blanking zone becomes active when theTEACH IN contact is released.
Floating blanking allows the object to move freely inside the detection zone of the Orion Extended.
Orion Light GuardsExtended - Floating Blanking
• Reduced resolution is a particular kind of floating blanking where more than one object can interrupt each a specific number of beams with the Orion Ext remaining in OSSD ON state.
• 4 adjacent beams can be interrupted by the object while the AOPD remains in OSSD ON state. The object may interrupt 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 beams while the Orion Ext remains in OSSD ON state.
Orion Light GuardsExtended - Reduced Resolution
The effective resolution of the Orion Ext changes. The minimum installation distance must be calculated using the effective resolution.
How to connect the SG4E - Cascade Connection
• Up to 3 Orion1 Extended can be connected in cascade and still be category 4.
• All Orion1 Extended can be connected in cascade. No specific model.
• They can have different lengths and different resolutions. Please see the manual for the limitations.
• See manual for response times.
Orion Light GuardsExtended - Cascading
© ABB Inc. November 25, 2015 | Slide 52
Orion Light GuardsExtended - Over Ride
When in a mute sequence, if a mute lamp fails, a sensor fails or the light curtain fails the mute is terminated.
Once the failed component is replaced or fixed and power resumed, mute is no longer active. It is against the standards to be able to power up in a mute condition.
Typically the operator will have to back the material out of the light curtain and clear the sensors manually before commencing the mute sequence over again. This is very time consuming and difficult.
Orion has an over ride function that allows the operator to stand at the curtain, cycle power and hold a reset button to force the light curtain on and thus force the material through. The next demand of the mute function will resume as normal.
© ABB Inc. November 25, 2015 | Slide 53
Orion Light GuardsAll Models - Manual Reset
• Manual reset is required when you can pass through the protective field of the Safety Light Curtain.
• When you exit the Safety Light Curtain you must press and release the reset button (NO) before the outputs will energize.
• In Manual Reset, the Acknowledge /Reset/Align input (pin 3 of the M12-12 pole connector on the receiver) has to be connected to +24 VDC though a normally open contact.
Manual reset
© ABB Inc. November 25, 2015 | Slide 54
Orion Light GuardsAll Models - Automatic Reset
• Automatic reset is allowed when it is impossible to be between the Safety Light Curtain and the hazard.
• When you remove your hands from the Safety Light Curtain the outputs will automatically energize.
• In Automatic Reset, the Acknowledge /Reset/Align input (pin 3 of the M12-12 pole connector on the receiver) has to be left floating (or connected to a NO push-button for ALIGN/ACKNOWLEDGE).
