Let’s Make 2016-2017
A Landmark Year
We Help Make an Excellent School Even BetterThe Pine Street School Foundation was formed in 2009 by a group of parents and grandparents seeking to help ensure Pine Street Elementary School has the resources needed to enhance an already exceptional educational experience.
In today’s competitive educational world, we believe the education our children receive is one of the best at any school, anywhere. Our goal is to increase discretionary funds for equipment, supplies, and projects above and beyond what traditional funding sources provide. Accordingly,
the Foundation has created a grant process for teachers and staff to leverage and fund these initiatives.
Over the last six years, the Foundation has awarded more than $159,000 in grants to teachers of grades K - 5. Teachers apply for grants each April and recipients are announced by the end of May so that projects can be implemented in the following school year. Gifts to the Foundation received by May 1 of each year determine the level of funding to be awarded for the coming year.

We need you – gifts of every amount truly make a
difference!This year’s campaign ends May 1,

are tax-deductible.
FAQ’sWHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN THE PTO AND THE PINE STREET SCHOOL
FOUNDATION?The differences are both in how funds are
generated and allocated. The PTO leverages family dues and fundraisers such as
Boosterthon and restaurant Spirit Nights to support teacher appreciation and meaningful school traditions. Examples include duty free
lunch for teachers, Grandparents Day and Colonial Day. The Foundation seeks financial commitments to fund academic enhancement projects at the classroom, grade, department, and school-wide levels. Examples range from
a new set of lacrosse equipment for the PE Department to specialty math and science
equipment for the 5th grade.
WHAT IS THE FOUNDATION’S SPENDING POLICY?
Our spending policy emphasizes that funds should be deployed quickly and that every
student should benefit from the Foundation’s grants every year. We do not intend to raise
an endowment to gradually deploy funds over many years. Our donors should know that we
intend for their current contributions to benefit today’s students.

“From its very inception, the Pine Street School Foundation was born of a
commitment to partnership. When parents and families see the value of public/private
partnership, there’s no limit to what we can accomplish together.”

1 2The Foundation has purchased the rights for a school-wide musical for the last several years, involving approximately half of the children at Pine Street in each production. Last year, the school presented Annie, and this year children are preparing The Lion King.
Our number of donors has jumped from 30 to 176 since 2009.
Giving to our annual campaigns has increased from $15,140 to $40, 298.
“Whether its supporting beautiful new playgrounds or teacher grants that advance creativity and innovation – there’s a special synergy at Pine Street thanks to the involvement of our parents and families.”
“The Foundation enhances all aspects of Pine Street School. Our children are older now, yet we continue to support the Foundation
because we believe an investment in Pine Street School is an investment in our collective future.”
“As a former teacher, I understand what an impact teacher grants make in a classroom. What better way to foster innovation in student learning than this!”
“Spartanburg is Contec’s home, and supporting our community matters. The opportunity to spark excitement in a young person – to uncover a talent or interest that changes
the course of that child’s life – compels us to give to the PSS Foundation year after year.”

The “Building Blocks of Education” grant provided natural materials for creative construction in Kindergarten classrooms. “During our recent study of measurement, we learned how to use balance scales,” said Kelli Hardigree. “Later in the day, without being prompted, the students created a balance scale using the blocks in our building area. They were using math terminology while comparing the weight of objects within the construction area.”
