Heeello Abu Dhabi !!
What an eventful year 2009 has been, so many exciting events, many new projects announced and lots of new faces in the capital. We truly are fortunate that in a global downturn Abu Dhabi has not only grown but flourished. This is testament to the innovation, resilience, andfortitude of policy makers, industry leaders and professionals.
The start of the year is always a good time to take stock of the past and think about how to make the world better. Abu Dhabi Tempohas produced a calendar poster that offers 40 ways to save the planet, not just as a pullout in this issue, but also for download fromwww.abudhabitempo.com as a poster and as a screensaver that offersdaily reminders.

SaySaySaySayYourSaySay HotWhat'sin Abu DhabiDear Ed,
I don't know if I'm the only person totally annoyed by this but I don't understand why many TV stations have no concept of 'prime time.' Some of the best shows on TV run far too late in the night. Case in point: ‘Admen'--one of the hottest shows--runs on Channel 4 at midnight! I know it airs for audiences in the entire region but it is still very late for all time zones.

Dear Ed,
Your feature on Ann Russo Petit came just in time. I had no idea what to wear to my brother’s Christmas party. A week ago, I visited their shop and found a divine pastel gown and within my budget too! Thank you Tempo.

The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) is organizing "Al Dhafra Festival 2010", a world-renowned cultural event focusing on camels, which runs from January 30 until February 8, 2010 in Madenat Zayed in Al Gharbia (The Western Region).
Al Dhafra Festival, which typically attracts thousands of locals and tourists to many of the events, will include many important events such as the traditional market, competitions on poetry, dates and photography and many new heritage events that will be announced later.
The Organising Committee announced the launch of a new contest for the first time at the Dhafra Festival called “Al-Hallab”. This new contest seeks to choose the camel that produces the most milk. The competition seeks to attract attention to this category in camel breading and encourage camel owners to acquire ‘milky’ camels, especially as these camels have been offering a great economic value for centuries.
2010 Abu Dhabi Golf ChampionshipJan 21 -24, Abu Dhabi Golf Club
Sports fans worldwide have been waiting with bated breath for this championship and with three of the world’s top 10 golfers already confirmed to battle it out in January’s 2010 Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, they have not waited in vain. The championship will have world number four and two-time Abu Dhabi Golf Championship winner, England’s Paul Casey return to Abu Dhabi to battle it out with Abu Dhabi stalwart – the fiery Spaniard and world number eight - Sergio Garcia, who will again be looking to show off his remarkable talents on The National Course at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
A new addition this year is the world number 10, Geoff Ogilvy. He could be the one to watch out for. The 6’ 2” imposing Aussie powerhouse is familiar with his opponents, having beat Casey earlier in the year to win the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona, USA. This year, you’ll be amazed by the championship’s depth of field. Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority looks to attract a wide diversity of golfing greats and the 2010 championship is no different. So what are you waiting for? Book your front row seats to the action now!

Louis Ramey has opened for many Musical Legends such as Ray Charles, Whitney Houston, The Temptations and Donna Summer.
So hang tight, these master blasters will tickle your funny bone and have you rolling on the floor before you can say ‘lol’.
Last month, one of our readers inquired about the portion of service charge which goes to the servers, or rather, if any of it goes to them at all. We visited a few well-know restaurants and this is what their employees had to say:
“Whatever the customer leaves is pooled and at the end of the day we divide the tips equally amongst all the waiters.” Manager of an upscale Asian restaurant
“The management takes a huge chunk of the tips, say 50%, as insurance for any crockery we damage and the rest is divided amongst us waiters.” Server of an Asian eatery
“All of us are assigned different tables and the reservation system ensures that all of us have a steady flow of customers. So we get to keep whatever tips are left on our table. If the dinning party is big, we share the work with other servers and then divide the tips equally.” Waitress from an Italian restaurant
“You’d be surprised at the small tips people leave for fast food joint servers. We work as hard as the other uptight waiters in the fancy places. I take whatever is left for me.” Waiter for Fast Food joint
The National Authority for Consumer Protection renewed a warning on 26th December that restaurants are not to add service charges according to Consumer Protection Law # 26 (2006). The Ministry of Economy is considering taking strict action against restaurants that violate this law. So heads up everyone, don’t let fancy dinnerware dupe you, and tip generously!

Our favourite branch of this Lebanese eatery is located
on a cosy and quiet corner on Al Salam Street (there

its pristine space, you are hooked! It’s just hard to figure

Renowned for its crackly crust flatbread baked in an open-flame stone oven, Cosi offers a pleasant French dinning experience in a refreshing, laid-back style. We settled in for breakfast at its branch in Al Wahda Mall and chose their signature hearth-baked, square bagel along with English tea from their wide tea selection. We know they have a wide selection because it was presented to us in a well organized box to choose from. We left wishing we had tried the monstrous Italiano sandwich instead as its delicious aroma from the adjacent table continuously tempted us to try it. Fairly light on the pocket and easy on the stomach, Cosi also offers you the ambience for truly enjoying the eating experience. They have a catering service to satisfy your dinning needs at home as well. Pay them a visit and get cosi.

This month, Zainab Shafi reveals one of her all time favourite holiday recipes:
“I have always loved desserts. I read somewhere that you can’t enjoy making food with an “I must” attitude; rather you should have an “I want to” attitude. For me, the time spent in researching new recipes and shopping for the ingredients is an enjoyable experience. This chocolate cake recipe is one of my favourites and I have made it numerous times both for family and friends.”
Chocolate CakeChocolate Cake
Ingredients: For Cake
Butter = 150g
Brown sugar = 300g
Eggs = 3
Apricot Jam/ Preserve= 75g
Flour= 225g
Baking soda= 8g
Milk= 150ml
Cocoa powder= 50g
For Syrup
Cream (vanilla/strawberry/banana, which ever
flavour you desire) = 100ml
Condensed milk= 1/2 tin
Milk= 150 ml
Sugar= 150g
Caution: This syrup is immensely sweet to balance
the brown sugar used in the cake. So if you want
you can omit condensed milk and add sugar
instead, or vice versa.
Preparation:For Cake:
1) Mix soft butter and brown sugar until fluffy.2) Gradually beat the eggs and add apricot jam.3) Mix flour, baking soda and cocoa powder and fold into the butter mixture.4) Gradually add milk.5) Pour the mixture into a baking dish.6) Bake at 160 ° for 50 to 55 minutes or until the mixture sets.
For Syrup:1) In a pan, mix cream, milk, condensed milk and sugar.2) Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally for 30 minutes. worth a mention and it is indeed a ‘tummy-satisfying’ addition. Although Djeij W Jebneh and Mish Falafel wraps are all time favourites and thankfully, they are still present on the new menu. Manakeesh, their traditionally fluffy Lebanese flatbread is presented with a delightful twist in the form of Aarouss Labneh and Jebneh Moutabbal on sun-dried tomato bread. Makes you wonder what it tastes like, doesn’t it? The dessert menu has definitely come a long way as it now includes a sinful chocolate cake and an equally tempting cheese cake in addition to the traditional milk-based, Ashtalieh Overmoze... oh and Jello too!
For this chilly winter month, we recommend popping in for a light meal (two can eat well under Dh 100) and some hot chocolate to experience hospitality the ZWZ way. What’s more? They deliver for free. Do we hear an Amen?

Ziploc to Keep it Fresh!
Give your childhood fascination with
snow globes a new twist this winter
season. Wrap presents in tissue paper
and place them inside Ziploc bags with
some trimming, pinecones, ribbon strips
and confetti to give ‘em a ‘snow globe
look’. Tie a ribbon around the open end
to secure the bag in place and Voila! Your
gift is ready to be presented.
Comic Wrapping PaperRecycle those old comics
to put a smile on a loved one’s face as he or she opens your gift. All you
need is a comic page (the bigger the
better as it will wrap all the way around your
present), some tape, colourfulribbons, and you are
good to go!
Handy Cloth Wrapping Running out of ideas of how to wrap an oddly-shaped gift for a dear one? Tempo
suggests that you keep it simple; use a fancy
piece of cloth. Just make sure it is circular so that
you can place the gift in the centre. Next, bring the circumference of the cloth together and tie it up with
decorative ribbons ofdifferent hues.
Decorate with OrigamiIf you are good with paperfolding, here’s a Tempo creative tip: Make an origami object with colourful paper and stick
it on top of a gift box. Make sure that the gift box does not have intricate patterns on it otherwise
it might overshadow your creation. This is a nice way of giving a personal
touch to a store-bought gift item.
Gift wrapping is an art form but let’s be honest, most of us stink at gift packing, wrapping, decorating or any other gift-embellishment-synonym that comes to mind. Not anymore! Tempo brings you some fresh and easy gift wrapping ideas for 2010:
That’s a Wrap!
Pants for Wine Bottles! We know we’ve got your complete
attention now! The idea is to dress up a wine bottle with an old denim or corduroy pant leg. All you need is a pair of pants (denim, dress or
corduroy), scissors, fabric glue or the good ol’ sewing machine.
Carefully cut the legs off about 12 inches from the bottom of the pants (length may vary for different pant sizes). Turn them inside-out and sew ends together or attach them with fabric glue. You can cut out the pant pocket and attach it to the front. Tuck a wine opener or a holiday greeting card in the pocket. Now slip a bottle of wine or champagne inside. Your
friends will laud your inventive-ness foryears to come.

“While walking along the breakwater sidewalk towards Marina Mall, I made anobservation. Besides being almost run over by an excited little boy on a big bicycle, I was actually standing at a spot from where I could enjoy both the sea view and the city skyline. Since it was evening time, it was pretty dark. Yet, I was enjoying the feel-ing of depth and calm only a breathtaking sea view can give.
“However, I could not get used to the loud sounds of traffic from the road. I began to consider whether a see-trough, plastic (re-cycled ofcourse) wall could be set-up between the road and the pavement to decrease the sound. Technically, it could even prevent fuel fumes from reaching us pedestrians. Maybe people would rather keep the exposed pathway and don’t want another wall, as a friend pointed out when I told her about this plastic wall. But here’s what I think, maybe people will actually like the calm and get more enjoyment out of their walk. Who knows, they may even go out for longer walks!
“As the former mayor of Bogotá, Enrique Peñalosa, who won wide praise for making his city a model of enlightened planning said, “As birds must fly, man must walk.””

“I run a henna design centre in partnership with my sister and things are going pretty well for us. We have been in business for over 7 years now and each day has been a blessing. Our parlour, Beautiful Henna Centre is much more than just a business to me. It is the fruit of our sincere hard work. Setting it up in Abu Dhabi was a good decision from a monetary standpoint. This place provides such financial security to entrepreneurs like us.
“Originally, I am from Bombay, India and I’ve lived in UAE for well over 14 years. To tell you the truth, I have lived and worked in other emirates of this wonderful country but none of them compare to Abu Dhabi. I feel it is the best place to raise a family and I wouldn’t trade it for any other country in the world.
“I live here with my husband and son while my parents live in Dubai. So you see almost my entire family is here. We visit them over the weekend and have lots of fun gatherings like trips to Al Ain and other emirates.
“At the end of the day, however, I love coming back to the peace and serenity of Abu Dhabi. To me, Abu Dhabi will always be the prosperous land of Baba Zayed. The only place where I find inner peace and tranquility.”

Now here’s a charity which really demonstrates the true meaning of the saying: One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Founder, Faisal Khan is a Canadian citizen who moved to UAE two years ago. Upon discovering the plight of labourers in camps, he initiat-ed a campaign to collect and re-distribute office and household items which would normally be discarded as trash. This includes: Clothes, electronics, food, and even used items you wish to sell. All you have to do is send an email to [email protected] or call 050 1794045 and they will schedule a pick-up (some-times it only takes them 20 minutes). If you wish to cover fuel expenses you can do so by making a donation. Pick-up points are located in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and Duabi. So if you are willing to contribute, stop throwing away junk which is in fairly good condition. Help Faisal bring a smile to someone’s face today!
All this stuff is not really expensive for someone who has a nice job. But this is just what we need. It goes very quickly when we distribute it. Faisal Khan

Ask key questions like: What are the core values and how are they enacted? Are short- or long-term results most valued? How are decisions made? How much risk is tolerated? The answers to these questions should give you a good sense of the culture of your organization.
Reconnaissance
Pay attention to how the power players communicate. Study their style, network of relationships and what types of proposals they say “yes” to most often. Emulate those traits by drawing on the strengths you have. We don’t mean you should stalk them. That will get you fired!
Be Proactive
Update your skills to be relevant to company initiatives. For example, don’t lag behind in technology, quality or customer service approaches that are crucial to you and your company’s success. Develop a personal track record as someone who gets results
Toot Away
Don’t be afraid to toot your own horn. If no one knows of your good work, you may lose at the game of office politics -- when you really deserve to win. Let others know what you’ve accomplished whenever you get the opportunity.
Respect
Don’t show preferential treatment or treat co-workers badly. You never know who someone might beconnected to and rude behavior may come back tobite you.
Zero Alliances
While an alliance may be powerful for the moment, bridging across factions may be a more effectivestrategy for long-term success if you intend to stay in your current organization for some time.
Persuade
Develop an assertive style, backed with solid facts and examples, to focus others’ attention on your ideas and proposals. Good politicians can adjust their messages for their audience ands are always well-prepared.
Break down multiple tasks by level ofpriority. Divide your work so that you have ‘hot’ immediate issues to take care of now, and ‘back burner’ issues that you can tend to in bursts whenever you have the time. Learn to be anefficient multi-tasker and you will find that you’re always on top of things.

Office PoliticsMEETINGMEETINGORGANIZING A
It’s time for your boss to assign a prestigious project to
someone from your team. To test your mettle, he gives you
a task to perform: you have to hold a meeting comprising
of all the big-shots in the business. Will you ace the task
or go down in flames? Tempo gives you a few pointers to
remember while setting up a meeting.
Step 1Agenda: The agenda is on outline of all issues to be
discussed. You need to make a concise outline. This must be
the first step as it will give you a gist of all the main issues.
After this step it’ll be easy to figure out who is attending the
meeting.
Step 2
Invites: Make phone calls to all persons who need to attend
the meeting and inquire about their availability with dates
and times. Cross reference their schedules to single out the
best time for holding the meeting. Immediately send out
a notice to all attendees of the date, start time, end time
and location of the meeting. To give it a professional touch,
attach an agenda of the meeting.
Step 3Presentation: On the day of the meeting have copies of
the agenda ready to be distributed to all attendees. Display
boards and power point presentations should be ready.
Also, the meeting organizer should be prepared to lead the
meeting and a record keeper should attend the meeting to
take notes.
Step 4
Meeting: The organizer needs to keep the discussion on
track. The leader must also keep track of the time and keep
the discussion flowing to hit all of the agenda items. He or
she should provide a short description of the agenda items
to start the discussion and also ask questions or request
input from attendees to obtain necessary information.
Step 5
Follow up: Once all agenda items are concluded, the group
should schedule a follow up meeting if necessary.
Step 6
Record: The record keeper should compile his notes into a
‘minutes of meeting’ document organized in outline format.
It should then be sent to the meeting attendees to seek
comments, corrections or changes. The final draft should be
distributed to the attendees and used for follow up action
and as the base for the next meeting agenda if necessary.

When dining out...When dining out...
Alright, let’s get right down to it. You need to go from fat to PHAT (pretty hot andtempting) but like most people, you have no idea how. Don’t sweat it, we sent our spies to go digging for some fitness secrets... mostly around skinny celebrities, and they came back with a list of some healthy and tasty substitutes for fattening foods. Pay attention! This may affect your waistline.
· Just because you are dinning out doesn’t mean you need to gorge on food. Be aware of the portions. Ask for a lunchportion or half order of your favourite dish when eating out.
· Look for the healthy choices marked on your menu like grilled meats and steamed vegetables versus the fried and smothered selections.
· Fruit is a great choice as a side item or dessert.
· Soups are very filling. When joined with a salad, soup can be asatisfying meal.
· Order the low fat dressings for salads. Don’t give us those crocodile tears, it’s the least you can do!
· If bread is a must, opt for wheat or whole grain.
· Take your time. If you eat slowly, you will become full quicker and will be less likely to overeat.
• Try canned tuna in water instead of in oil and save 77 calories and 8 grams of fat (per 4-ounce serving).
• Substitute whole-milk with skim-milk. You will save 60 calories and 8 grams of fat.
• Skip the butter completely or use diet margarine instead.
• Choose mustard and ketchup overmayonnaise. These have fewer calories.
• Go for roasted turkey, pass up theroasted duck and you'll save 205 calories and 28 grams of fat.
• If you substitute 1 ounce of Canadian bacon for 1 ounce of fried bacon, you'll save 111 calories and 12 grams of fat.
• Watch out for cream based soups as these can add on the calories. Order a broth based soup instead.
• Drink water or tea with lemon, and avoid the soft drinks. Most fast food restaurants now offer low fat milk andchocolate milk for the kids.
• Substitute whole-milk ricotta cheese with skim-milk ricotta cheese. You'll save 88 calories and 12 fat grams.
• Instead of a slice of cherry pie, eat 20 fresh cherries. You'll save 252 calories and 14 grams of fat.
• Did you know that a slice of pecan pie has 407 more calories than a slice of pumpkin bread? We knew it...sort of.

“Boom Boom Pow” - Black Eyed Peas
Yes we have to admit, we all got the feeling this year with Black Eyed Peas. We played it while getting dressed to go out, while waiting for the weekend – in house parties and in all the clubs! The song has also been included in the Guinness book of records for being played during the biggest flash mob assembly in the world on the Oprah Show in Chicago.
“Poker face” – Lady Gaga
This song has achieved worldwide success by reaching number one in more than 17 countries including the USA, UK and Australia. Despite her mind-numbing-over-the-top sense of style, Lady Gaga with herpop/electronic song has brought an innovative rhythm to the music world and we are all gaga for her, no doubt!
“Human” - The Killers
This band not only rocked Abu Dhabi in concert but also the world music charts with this amazing track. A wonderfully sublime rock song, catchy as everything they have churned out in the past few years can bedescribed as a beautiful melody wrapped in a driven dance beat and paired with remarkable lyrics. Try and top that!
“Right Round” - Flo Rida
Who didn’t spin his right round with Flo Rida! Yes we did!!! The song was released in the beginning of the year and has managed to remain in the charts till now!
“Down” - Jay Sean
We heard it blast out of all radio stations, the new Jay Sean songfeaturing Lil Wayn. This British born singer surprised us all with hisone-man-show album. As they say in French, "Chapeau".
“I know you want me” - Pitbull
We danced all summer to this mucho calor song. This catchy song is a mix of raggeaton and Havana beats which make you want to dance all night long! It has been nominated 4th top favorite/most-viewed music video of all time.
Other artists that have blown our minds this year include Katy Perry with "Hot n' cold", Alicia Keys feat Jay-Z "New York", Ne-Yo feat Kelly Hilson and Kayne West "Knocked you down", Pink "Sober", Britney Spears "Circus", and David Guetta "One love".
2009 has been a year full of diverse music from artists and DJs who have left their mark with so many memorable tracks. Let’s hope 2010 will top that!

By Rantan Rave Multi-racial names:Sara and Sami
When I named my son “Ayman” little did I know that the name would strike a kindred connection with Irish nationals we’d encounter. “Ayman,” the Arabic of which means “righteous” sounds very much like the traditional Irish name Eamon which is said to be of Irish, Gaelic and Old English origin, and means "wealthy protector". Other spellings of Irish ‘Eamon’ are: Amon, Aimon, Aymon, Eames, Eaman, Eamann and Eamonn. (Interestingly some of these are identical to the Arabic alternative spellings for “Ayman.” ) When my son introduces himself to Britons, the usual follow up question is: “you have an Irish name?” and he goes into a memorized explanation on the ethnology of his name.
The popularity of names waxes and wanes, just like the social changes within a given society. Growing up, the syrupy, pleasant sounding names of the Levant swept some of the late baby boom years in many Arabian communities, so that parents (inspired by Egyptian and Levantine cinema) called an entire generation of kids names such as "Hani,” “Rami,” “Sami,” “Rania,” “Dania,” “Suzanne” etc. Now a growing number of those same Hanis and Ramis are starting to change their names into more ‘masculine’ sounding traditional Muslim names such as Abdullah, Khalid and Mohammed. The trend has been this: a Hani or Rami (from an Arabian Peninsula country) lives his whole life with a “lightweight” name, and then he gets married. He realizes that when he names his next born, his son (or daughter) would invariably have a “weak” middle name. The child could, for example, become an Abdullah Hani Al Mansour. So he rushes to get his name changed before the child is born.
Incidentally, girls’ traditional Muslim names are also undergoing resurgence. These are names such as Aisha, Amina, Khadija, Mariam, Fatima etc.

We all know about the parking problem here, and we also know that car owners are finding increasingly creative work-around solutions. But the one fix that is being embraced ‘en masse’ is the one that entitles you to park anywhere you want, block any number of cars, any time of day and night, as long as you place your mobile number on the dashboard. You can personalize your sign: from large scrawling on a paper with a felt pen, to a business card for that corporate touch. But even if you do forget to place your mobile number, you get a polite call from the traffic police asking you to move your car; which is a great service to be sure, but clearly encourages scoundrels to abuse the system.
So what is the solution, you ask? Perhaps creating a bit of a method to the madness...like a ‘Code Green’ situation (a life or death situation where you are called upon to administer CPR or take a heart attack victim to the hospital) entitles you to block a car. If you’re in ‘Code Orange’ territory you may block a car only if the car you’re blocking has a thick blanket of dust, a foreign plate and looks like it hasn’t been moved since 1973 - and even then it would be for a five minute stop to pick up formula for a hungry baby. Then there is ‘Code Red’ where you’re tempted to block a car to pick up gum, a quick latte, shawarma etc.... but you risk your car getting towed, crushed and getting shipped to China as scrap metal.

So I went all out on my budget and booked a fancy fast food place to accommodate all 50 relatives and close pals. Little did I know that another lady wanted to book the restaurant on the same date and time. After making countless annoying attempts at convincing me to shift my party to another venue, she did the most underhanded thing. She contacted the management of the restaurant over the phone, pretended to be me and cancelled the order.
I was appalled at the carelessness of themanagement. They should have contacted me on the number which I had submitted at the time of the booking. Instead, they cancelled my booking based on a phone call from some imposter and caused me a great embarrassment when I had to cancel my plans due to unavailability of other venues at such short notice. If you ask me, that’s just unfair andunprofessional.

What would you do if this happened to you? Would you take it up with the management and ask them to reschedule or would you just let it go?
“I guess they left her with no option really. Maybe she should spread the word and warn others about the restaurant’s lack of professionalism.” Kate B.
“Abroad, she could actually sue the fast food joint over something like this! She should have forced the management to reschedule on the very same day as before since it wasn’t her fault. They should have double checked with her first.” Jason of Khalidiya
“A clever thing to do would be to make the food place pay for their mistake by asking them to reduce buffet charges when she throws a party the next time. They are to blame. I had a friend go through a similar experience. They should start to pay more heed to such incidents.” Dua Ali
“It was an honest mistake. People cancel orders and bookings over the phone many times. I am in the hotel industry. I know it can be confusing and tricky to remember each and every customer’s face and profile. The lady should just let it pass.” J. D

Dear Diary,
When I heard that Sir Richard Branson is going to be in Abu Dhabi to throw a party for F1 champ, Jensen Button,I promised myself (and everyone I know ;P ) that I won’t let him leave town without posing for a picture with me ;)
I tried calling Emirates Palace to get on the guest list but was told that it is a private party hosted by Virgin Galactic and Brawn. Then it occurred to me, why not use a trick which I had learned from the man himself (Sir Branson), after reading his book. Next thing you know, I got in!
When I arrived at the club, I somehow managed to get Sir Richard’s attention and unbelievably Sir Branson walked up to me and shook my hand with his left. I inquired about his arm and he mentioned his quad biking accident in the Pyrenees. I remember he joked about it and told me that fortunately the quad bike didn’t come down on top of him. What a sense of adventure he has!
He had told me earlier in the evening that his son, Sam was producing a film in the Arctic. And that he learned a lot while having a fantastic adventure tracking weather patterns and filming the profound changes created by global warming. I remember his passionate words,
Rather than saying you can’t do this and you can’t do that, we are looking for solutions. I’m particularly conscious of it because of the airline. That’s one of the reasons I’m doing it.I have to balance my books.
I congratulated Sir Richard on setting up his space venture in Abu Dhabi and he elaborated on his plans that sometime in the next three or four months, he’ll be back in Abu Dhabi for the first step in the creation of his grandest plan yet: The first Virgin Galactic space port, where travellers will embark on their journey into space. Then he added,
We’re thrilled to be doing this here. Abu Dhabi is spectacular.
He gave me a high five before I left his table.
If you have had a once in a lifetime experience in Abu Dhabi, send us a page from your diary and tell us your thrilling tale, email: [email protected], with ‘Abu Dhabi Diaries’ in the subject line.

CultureTalkArabic calligraphy is a primary form of art for written Islamic visualexpression. Written from right to left, the Arabic script at its best can be a flowing continuum of ascending verticals, descending curves, andtemperate horizontals, achieving a measured balance between staticperfection of individual form and paced and rhythmic movement.Confused? Alright, let’s break it down to more digestible bites
Origin
The early Arab culture was prolific in terms of writing and poetry. Long before they were gathered into the Islamic fold, the nomadic Arabs felt an immense appreciation for the spoken and written word. Jazm is theearliest referenced Arabic script. This script is believed to be an advanced form of the Nabataean (nomadic Arabs) alphabet. The stiff, angular, and well-proportioned letters of the Jazm script lead to the advent of the famous Kufi script meaning the script of Kufa, an Iraqi town.
Tools of the Trade
Calligraphers used a reed and brush pen called Qalam, scissors, a knife for cutting the pens, an ink pot, and a sharpening tool. It was essential that they knew how to identify the best cane suitable for a good pen, how to trim the nib, and how to split the cane exactly in the center so that the nib had equal halves. A good pen was cherished and, sometimes, was even handed down to another generation. Other times, it was buried with the calligrapher when he died.
Techniques
The most outstanding writing techniques or scripts in ArabicCalligraphy are are Gulzar, Maraya or Muthanna, Zoomorphic, Siyaqat, and al-Khat al-Hurr.
Tughra is a unique calligraphic device that is used as a royal seal.
Gulzar is often used in composite calligraphy.
In zoomorphy, the words are structured into the shape of a human figure, an animal, or an object.
Fast FactArabic script is derived from the Aramaic Nabataean
alphabet. The Arabic alphabet is a script of 28 letters and
uses long but not short vowels. The letters are derived
from only 17 distinct forms, distinguished one from
another by a dot or dots placed above or below the letter.
Short vowels are indicated by small diagonal strokes
above or below letters.

Isolate Stressing FactorsUnderstand the basis of the problem and try to figure out its root cause. As a student, there are a number of reasons which act as the origin of a stressful life. Peer pressure is also a significant contributing factor. It may involve heavy expenses at times, as you may want to spend a lot of money because of the 'I want one too' factor. Add to this the usual education and competition related factors and you will find a number of causes for stress in your student life.
Accept the Facts There are some things which you are born with. As a student, it is essential for you to recognize your skills. Access yourself and choose your major accordingly. For once, do not pay heed to what subjects your close friends opt for, what your parents want or what line of work your neighbour’s kids are planning to go for. Some decisions are yours to take and yours alone. These are the facts of life and the more you try to change them or the more you brood over them, the more you will fall in clutches of stress. Relax A great way to manage stress is to devote some time for yourself. This is the time away from studies, away from friends and away from family. This is your time. Introspect and develop optimism in yourself. Try to relax. Meditation is very helpful for this purpose. Monitor Your HealthIt is necessary that you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Stay away from narcotics. Restrict your alcohol intake, and do not smoke. Exercise regularly - join some sports team at school and never miss the gym. The healthier your body remains, the easier it will be for you to beat stress.

Haircut Adventures Any resident in a new country has challenges in discovering how simple day-to-day things are done. This includes locating appropriate grocery stores, dentists, doctors, and personal grooming salons. The personal grooming, mainly haircuts (for us guys), is probably the most difficult. There are hundreds of “Mens’ Salons” in the city but I live in the suburbs and the choices are slim.
I recently went to a local barber and was asked if I wanted a scalp massage in addition to a trim. As someone who will try anything once, I agreed and was treated to what I would call a handful of pink axle grease worked into my hair. At least it washed out! A few weeks ago, I decided to try a barber in a nearby five star hotel. The barber did a good job and was friendly. At the end of the haircut, he noted that I had some stray hair in my ears and suggested he “wax” them out. Again, being the adventurer that I am, I consented. He put some warm substanceinside both my ears and after the heat subsided, I felt a sharp pain in my right ear followed by the same in my left as he ripped the wax out. The sting lasted for 20 minutes but was not all that unpleasant.
I now admire people who get more “sensitive” parts waxed. - Randy Parker

Dear Um Saif,
I like your no-nonsense approach to life and that’s why I need your advice. My son is 13 and he goes to a private school where his friends are from affluent families and they get very generous allowances. In our home, we give an allowance of Dh 100 per month and expect him to also help around the house, otherwise he doesn’t get paid. The problem is that his friends always go out to the mall, movies etc and my son often asks us for more money. We give it to him because we don’t want him to miss out or feel like he is different from his friends. But I feel that he is spending too much, and asking for more money than we can afford to give. What would you do if you were in my situation?
Amber
Dear Amber,
Indeed I am in your situation! As, I believe, half of the population here is too. Now, we can either take the ‘I don’t want him to feel any different or less privileged’ route and indulge them, or we could take this opportunity to start imparting valuable lifelong lessons that may be painful to our children (and yes, equallypainful to us). I found after indulging my son for some time that number one, he was getting careless with money, two, wasbeginning to act like he was entitled, and three, was spending money on useless things. So I set him aside and told him that he needs to start managing his money better, and that he should learn to say no to his friends. I also told him that he could get money rewards from me if he earns it, say with good grades or reading books. My dear Amber, it is not easy but I believe that we should guide our children through these important lessons to avoid bringing up a generation of brats.

Since it’s the beginning of a New Year, I am just taking thisopportunity to say:
· For all those I've made promises to but never kept - it was not deliberate but I will "improve" in 2010.
· Those that I owe lunches, movies, nights out, etc.... I'll fix that as well, I'll make time, for sure.
· For those who have supported me and made me smile through all my hardships...I say thanks, keep doing it!
· For those I've disagreed with, disgraced, hurt, argued with and just never quite got along with......well, I'm SORRY! Let's try again next year.
· For those that have let me down.....oh well, I should have known better.
· For all the true friends that I have, you ROCK!
But all in all, you guys have made 2009 a great year. May 2010 be a fantastic year for you.
Happy New Year!
