ACADEMIC AUDIT FOR THE SESSION 2004-2005
HISTORY
Raja Peary Mohan College, Uttarpara, was founded on 20th June 1887, by Late Joykrishna
Mukherjee, one of the pioneers in educational and cultural movements and social reforms in 19th
country Bengal. At the time of foundation, the College was named Uttarpara College. Eight years
later, Late Raja Peary Mohan Mukherjee, son and successor of Joykrishna Mukherjee maintained
the College as a non-government Institution. Raja Peary Mohan Mukherjee was the first M.A.
from Calcutta University. In 1953, the College was renamed as Raja Peary Mohan College,
Uttarpara in gratitude to Raja Peary Mohan Mukherjee, the patron and benefactor of the College,
who served as the crisis-manager when the College had run into a very rough weather.
AMBIENCE
Since the date of its foundation, the College slowly and steadily transcended its local boundary
and grew into a very large educational institution catering to the academic needs of boys and girls
coming from its vast hinterland. The College draws a large no. of students from the Districts of
Hooghly, Howrah and North 24-Parganas, including North Kolkata. It has now developed itself
as a prominent center of learning and as one of the biggest Colleges in West Bengal under
Calcutta University. In 1956, from Intermediate standard, the College was upgraded to a Degree
College with affiliation in degrees of Arts and Science. Two years later, it got its affiliation in
Commerce faculty, at the Pass level and in 1970 at the Honours level. Till 1990, the College had
been offering Honours Courses in Bengali, Political Science, Philosophy, Physics, Chemistry,
Mathematics, Economics and Zoology. In 1990, the College got permission to provide Honours
course in Physiology, and in 1997 in English and in Botany. Raja Peary Mohan College
Computer Centre was inaugurated on 8th July 1994 by the Hon’ble State Education Monister,
Prof. Satyasadhan Chakraborty.
LOCATION
The College has a beautiful overview of the Hooghly River, the Dakshineswar Kali Temple
and of the Vivekananda Setu, more commonly known as Bally Bridge. It is located on a point
near the G.T.Road, and is within easy reach of Bally Ghat Railway Station and Bally station on
Chord line as well as Howrah-Bandel and Tarakeswar Main line. The College is well connected
2
by both railway and bus routes with all parts of the districts of Kolkata, Hooghly, Howrah and
North 24 Parganas. Thus the location of the College is ideally suited for catering to the
educational needs of the students from distant urban and rural areas.
