Introduction
This presentation has been prepared to firstly identify the drivers for sustainable
construction and the focuses on importance of water and energy conservation. In
order to ensure sustainable solutions the presentation looks at what technologiesare available within Qatar. The process to ensure cost effective sustainable MEP
solutions is considered along with the utilization of the tools necessary to guide
designers how to demonstrate targeted and achieve energy efficient solutions .

Climate ChangeClimate change and global warming are
unequivocally the biggest and most
fundamental problems facing planetearth and mankind today. Global
warming and climate change are
expected to have a cataclysmic effect
across the globe. The worst effects of
climate change can be avoided if
greenhouse gases incorporating carbondioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere are
stabilised instead of being allowed to
increase.

Environmental TargetsKyoto Protocol
Cut overall emissions of greenhouse gases
by 5.2% below 1990 levels by 2008-2012
Qatar
Ratified their commitment on the 11th Jan
05. Qatar is a member of the G77 andsubsequently does not have any reduction
targets as Qatar is considered a developing
country.
Qatar CommitmentQatar has a vision whereby construction projects should consider becoming
sustainable with no specific international target. Local requirements for Qsas have
been implemented to achieve this vision.

The Importance of Energy and Water Conservation
Energy
Energy relates to carbon which in turn is accelerating climate change The built environment contributes 50% of overall carbon emissions
LEED focuses on energy reduction (one credit most points available)
Passive and active solutions to reduce energy
Water Water in the Middle East is precious
Droughts
Water models are required to justify water conservation

Availability of Sustainable Technology
The Middle East is going Green / Sustainable All leading manufacturers and suppliers have green technologies available
The industry needs to ensure technologies to reduce the cost in the long term Solar collectors have very low payback periods Photovoltaic panels are expensive and hence longer payback periods Solar chillers (Absorption chillers with solar collectors) Building Thermal Mass Storage Systems

Utilizing Design Tools that Help Quantify Sustainable MEP Solutions
Energy modeling, or energy simulation, is a method for predicting the energy
consumption of a building. The analysis considers the buildings numerous thermal
characteristics including the materials of the walls and rest of the building envelope,
the size and orientation of the building, how the building is occupied and operated, and
the local climate.
