Preparation

PrintandcutaparttheTen Naughty Little Monkeyswordcardsandhavethemreadytoplaceinapocketchart.

Introduction

1. Askstudentstoraisetheirhandsiftheyhaveeverheardtherhyme"FiveLittleMonkeys."

2.Remindstudentsthattherhymecountsdownfromfivemonkeystozeromonkeys.Invitestudentstochanttherhymewithyou: Five little monkeys jumping on the bed, One fell off and bumped his head. Mama called the doctor, and the doctor said, "No more monkeys jumping on the bed!"

3.Continueuntilyouhavechantedallsixverses.

Procedure

1. TellstudentsyouaregoingtoreadaloudastorycalledTen Naughty Little Monkeys.

2.Explainthatthisstorybeginswiththefamiliarrhyme,butsoonthemonkeysaredoingalotmorethanjustjumpingonthebed!

3.Teachstudentsthatthewordjumpingcomesfromthewordjump.Jumpandjumpingareactionwords.Theydescribeanactionthatsomeonedoesorisdoing.

4.Askstudentstoshareotheractionwordstheycanthinkof.5.Invitestudentstolistencarefullyforactionwordsinthestory.6.Asyouread,emphasizethemainactionwordineachverse:

jumping, racing, skating, climbing, rolling, hiking, fishing, playing, dressingandfollowing.

7.Afteryouhavefinishedreading,displaythewordcardsinapocketchart.Sayeachwordaloudandpromptstudentstorepeatthewordsafteryou.

8.Invitestudentstoidentifythewordsthatdescribethemonkeys’actionsinthestory(jump, race, skate, climb, hike, playandfollow).Usethetitlecardstosortthewordcardsintotwogroups:ActionWords(verbs)/NotActionWords.

Guided Practice

1. PrepareapieceofchartpaperwiththetitleAmazing Action Words.2.Invitestudentstobrainstorm10actionwords.Asstudentssuggesteachword,writethemonthechart

paper.3.Dividetheclassintogroupsofthreeorfour.Askeachgrouptoworktogethertocomeupwithasmany

actionwordsastheycan.4.Whenstudentsarefinishedmakingtheirlists,haveeachgroupsharetheirwordswiththeclass.Add

somewordsfromeachgrouponthechartpaper.
