I.Introduction Thesoftwareisshippedwithallsettingssettothesuggesteddefaults.Manyofthesesettingsarebasedpurelyonpersonalpreference,andhavenoprovenclinicalimpact.Anysettingthathasarecommendedvaluehasbeennoted.

The“outercircumference”preferencedesignatesthetotalcircumferenceofthefan.Modifyingthisvaluechangestheendpointofeach“ray”ofthefan.

The“innercircumference”preferencedesignatesthecircumferenceoftheinner,emptyareaofthefan.Modifyingthisvaluechangesthestartingpointofeach“ray”ofthefan.
The“linethickness”preferencedesignatesthethicknessofeach“ray”ofthefan.
2. CircularAstigmatism
Thecircularastigmatic(or“showerdrain”)patternmaybesizedaccordingtoyourpersonalpreference.

3. ColorTest
Theplateheightsettingallowsyoutocustomizethedefaultplatesizeonyourmainchartscreen.Simplyenteryourpreferredsizeincentimeters.Thestandardsizeis9cmviewedat70cm,butthiscanbemodi^iedaccordingtoyourneeds. Theminidisplaycalibrationmayormaynotbevisibletoyou,dependingonwhetheryouhavetheminidisplayfeatureinstalled.Enterthediagonalviewablesizeofyourminidisplaytoallowthesoftwaretocalibratethecolortestsizingforthatscreen.Ifthisisincorrect,thecolortestmaynotbeproperlysizedwhenviewedontheminidisplay.

4. ContrastSensitivity
Therearetwotabsforthecontrastsensitivitytests‐the^irsttab,“Normal”,governsthesettingsthatapplytoallcontrasttests.Thesecondtab,“Graduated”,coverssettingsthatarespeci^ictograduatedcontrastdegradationtesting.
Normal: Youcancontrolthestartingpercentageofallthecontrasttests; inotherwords,atwhatWeberpercentageshouldthelettersbeshown whenthecontrasttestingis^irstenabled.
Youcanalsocontrolthesizeoftheincrementsthatyouadjust thecontrastlevelswhiletesting.
Withtheexamplesettings,anexamplecontrasttestwouldbe 60%,50%,40%,30%,etc.

Graduated: Thegraduatedcontrasttestallowsforquickcontrastthreshold testing.Itcanalsobemodi^iedto^itmanydifferenttesting environments.
The^irstsettingcontrolsthenumberofletterstodisplay,per contrastlevel.
Thesecondsettingcontrolstheamountofcontrasttojump betweencontrastlevels.
The^inalsettingallowsfor^inecontrolstartingatacertain range;whenyoureachthisrange,thecontrastlevelbeginsdecreasing by1%perletterset,ratherthanbythenumberspeci^iedbythesecond setting.
Agraduatedcontrasttestusingtheexamplesettingswouldhave 5lettersat60%,then5letters50%,then5at40%,etc,untilitgotdown

to10%,atwhichpointyouwouldhave5lettersat10%,then5lettersat 9%,etc.
5. CrossChart
The“Lefteye”and“Righteye”preferencescontrolthecolorthatisdisplayedforeacheyeduringtesting.Thiscanbesettoblack/whiteforpolarizedtesting,orcalibratedtoyourred/green^iltersonyourrefractor.
Thebackgroundcolorcanbechangedtoeitheruseablackbackgroundorawhitebackground.Thewhitebackgroundisusuallyusedforpolarization,andtheblackbackgroundisusedotherwise.
Thethicknessofeachlinesegmentcanbecontrolledusingthe“linewidth”setting.Somedoctorshavesuggestedthatthinnerlinesarebetteratdetectingdisparities,butthereisnoformalresearchsupportingthis.

Thelengthofeachlinesegmentcanbecustomizedaswell,usingthe“linelength”slider.
Thecentral^ixationdot,whichcanbetoggledonandoffwhiletesting,canbesizedusingthispreference.Thelinesegmentswillrelocatetoaccommodatealldotsizes.
6. CrowdingBars
The“thickness”settingallowsyoutocontrolhowthickeachcrowdingbarareinrelationtothesizeoftheoptotype.Thisiscommonlysettothestrokesizeoftheoptotypeused.
The“length”settingcontrolshowfareachcrowdingbarreachesacrosstheoptotype.Normallythisissetto100%,meaningthatthecrowdingbar

spanstheentirewidthorheightoftheoptotype.Thisvaluecanbeover100%,ifdesired.
The“clearance”optiondetermineswhereeachbarisdrawninrelationtotheoptotype.Thisisnormally50%,aslargervaluesreducethecrowdingeffect,andsmallervaluestendtooveremphasizeit.
7. DisplayOptions
Thedisplayoptionscontrolwhereandhowthechartsare displayedonthecomputer.
Thescreenresolutionletsyoucontrolthesizeofthechartscreen, withaminimumsizeof1024x768.Thereisnomaximumsize.Thisis normallysettothenativedisplayresolutionofthemonitor.

Optotyperesolutionregulatesthequalityoftheoptotypes,and howmuchcomputingtimeisallocatedtosmoothingtheedgeofthe optotypes.Bestwillprovidethesmoothestoptotypeedges,whileGood willprovideagoodbalancebetweenperformanceandquality.
TheChartDisplayandDialogDisplayoptionscontrolwhich monitorthechartsanddialogsdisplayon,respectively.Thisonlyapplies ifyouhavemorethanonemonitorattachedtothesystemthatthe AcuitySystemisrunningon.Monitor1istheprimarymonitor(withthe StartmenuonWindows,ortheMenuBaronMac),andMonitor2isthe secondarymonitor.
8. ExternalOptotype
Thissettingallowsyoutospecifyalocationofafolderofimages touseasacustomoptotype.Itcanacceptmostcommonimage^iletypes,

includingjpg,bmp,gif,andpng.Note:optotype^ilenamesmustnot includespaces,andthefoldermustincludeatleast3differentoptotypes inordertorandomizeproperly.
9. FixationDot
The^ixationdothas2differentsettings,onerelatedtothesizeofthedot,andonerelatedtothecolorofthedot.
Thedefaultsizeofthe^ixationdotmaybesetusingtheslider.The dotcanalsobesizedupanddownonthe^lyusingtheremote,butitwill alwaysresettothesizespeci^iedhere.

The^ixationdot’scolorsettingscanbechangedhere.Ifthedotis settochangecolorsautomatically,the^ixationdotwillautomatically changetoarandomcolorevery3seconds‐thisisgoodformaintaining ^ixationinyoungerchildren.Ifthedotissettochangecolorsmanually, thecolorwillchangeonlyfromtheremote.Thisisgoodfor encouraging^ixationinadults(ie,“Tellmewhenyouseethedot changecolors.”)

10.Images
TheImagespreferencescontrolsettingsrelatedtotheslideshow portionoftheMediaCenter.
The^irstsettingletsyouspecifyafoldercontainingoneormore foldersofimages(thesesub‐folderswillbeeachslideshow).Theimages shouldbeinacommonpictureformat,suchasjpg,bmp,gif,orpng.
Youcanalsocontrolthetransitioneffectbetweenimagesinthe slideshowwiththedropdownlabeled“Plain”intheexample.
Youcanchoosehowtheslideshowiscontrolled;eitherin “Manual”mode,whichdoesn’tchangeslidesunlesstriggedbythe remote,orinAutomaticmode,byspecifyingthenumberofseconds betweeneachslide.

IftheslideshowisinAutomaticmode,itcanbesettoreturntothe beginningoftheshowtoplayagainbycheckingthe“Loopslideshow” box.
Finally,ifthesystemissetupinamirroredenvironment,by checking“Automirror”,theMediaCenterwillautomatically^lipany imagesifnecessary,toappearcorrectlywhenviewedthroughamirror.
11.Luminance
Theluminanceofthescreencanbechangedifrequiredfor patientswithsensitiveeyes.Normallythescreenis0%obscured,butit canbeobscuredbyvaryingamounts;thethreevaluesmaybechanged todimthescreendifferingamountsasneeded.Thiscanalsobeusedto mimicthebrightnessofanoldprojector,ifdesired.

12.MaddoxRod
ThissettingcontrolsthecoloroftheMaddoxrod.Thepreview belowshowsthecurrentcolorsetting.
13.Notation

TheNotationsettingaffectswhichstrokeratioandcharactersetis usedtogenerateoptotypes,aswellasusingtheappropriateVA progressionforeachset.
VAtextsizecontrolsthesizeoftheVAdisplayonthechartscreen.
LeftandRightVAsettingscontrolthedisplayformatoftheleft andrightVAdisplayareas,respectively.
14.PhoriaChart
Thephoriachartsettingscontrolthecolorofthelefteye,thecolor oftherighteye,andthecolorofthebackground.Thisiscrucialto achievingidealcancellationduringtesting.
Thepreviewareabelowshowswhatcolorsareproducedusing thecurrentcolorsettings.

15.Pointers
ThePointerfeaturegivestheoptionofwhichpointertousewhen togglingPointermode.
NormalindicatesthatPointermodeisdisabled.
Cycleindicatesthatadifferentpointershouldbeusedeverytime Pointermodeisengaged.
Ifyouspecifyapointer(Arrow,Lightsaber,PrincessWand),then thatpointerwillbeusedwheneverPointermodeisinvoked.

16.Red/GreenChart
TheRed/Greenchartsettingsallowyoutocalibratetheredand greencolorsofthecharttomatchtheredandgreen^iltersonyour refractor.Thisisimportanttoensureadequatecancellationduring testing.

17.RemoteControls
Theremotecontrolpageisusedforsetupoftheremotecontrol. Simplyclickonthepictureoftheremotecontrolthatyou’reusing,and thesoftwarewillautomaticallyupdatethesoftwaretousethatremote. YourcomputerMUSTberestartedbeforethesechangestakeeffect.
18.SavedSet

TheSavedSetoptioncanbeusedtotriggertheSavedSetsetup screen,whichallowsyoutodisabletherandomgenerationofoptotype sequences,andtouseonlynon‐randomsetsthatyouspecify.Thiscanbe usefulifyouwanttobeabletomemorizeyourmost‐usedcharts.
19.SnellenChart
Thispreferenceoptionmayalsobecalled“ETDRSchart”or“Baileychart”,dependingonthenotationyou’reusing.Thisalsoaffectswhichsettingsareavailabletoyou.
Wheninmulti‐linemode,thesoftwarewillalwaysdrawasmanylinesasispossibleto^itonthescreen,uptothe“MaxLines”settingthatyouspecify.
IfyouareinSnellennotation,youcanmodifythenotationrulesslightlyifdesired.Thisincludestheabilitytochangetheoptotyperatio,andtoaddadditional^ixedspacebetweentheletterswhendrawinganoptotypechart.

20.Startup
Thestartupoptionscontrolthebehaviorofthesoftwarewhenit ^irstturnson,orbehaviorofthecomputerthatmightaffecthowthe softwarebehaves.
“Hidecontrolpanelonstartup?”controlswhetherornotthe controlpanelishiddenwhenthesoftwareis^irstengaged.Thisshould normallybeturnedononceyoubecomefamiliarwiththeremote control.
“Mirroroptotypesonstartup?”allowsthesoftwaretobeusedina mirroredenvironmentwithouthavingtoturnonmirroringeverytime thesoftwareisrestarted.
“Usesavedsetonstartup?”indicateswhetherornotthesoftware shoulduserandomizedmode.

“Startacuitysystemautomatically?”controlswhetherornotthe AcuitySystemshouldstartautomaticallywhenthecomputerisstarted. Thisappliestoshutdown/bootupsequences,restarts,andpowerloss aswell.
“PresetEnergySaver”willautomaticallychangeseveralOS‐level settingstobemoretesting‐friendly,suchasdisablingthescreensaver andpreventingthecomputerfromgoingtosleep.ThisisaMac‐only feature,andrequiresyoutoenteryourAdministratorpassword.
Youcanalsoselectyourstartuptest.Simplyspecifyyour preferreddisplaymodeandthestartingsize,andtheAcuitySystemwill alwaysstartonthattest.
21.Stereo
TheStereosettingsaffecttheRed/BlueStereotest.Normally3D testshavetheprimaryshapepopintothefront,butifneededthiscanbe invertedsothattheshapetoidentifypopsintotheback.Thisinverted methodcanbesubstantiallymoredif^iculttodetect.

22.Video
Thevideosettingscontrolvariousaspectsofthevideoportionof theMediaCenter.
First,youmustspecifyafolderofvideostouseasyourvideo library.ThesecanbeanypopularvideoformatexcludingWMV,suchas MPG,MOV,orAVI.
“Audio”controlswhetherornotthevideoshaveanyaudio component.
“Controller”dealswiththedisplayofacontrolleronthevideoor not‐thiscanbeusefulifyouplanoncontrollingthevideousinga mouse.

“Loopvideo”controlswhetherornotthevideoloopswhenit reachestheendofaclip. “Proportionate”determineswhetheravideomaintainsitsaspect ratiowhenplaying,orifitisstretchedto^itthescreen.
“Automirror”causesvideostodisplaymirrored,whenshownina mirroredenvironment,sothattheyappearnormalthroughthemirror.
Youcanalsocontrolwhichdisplaythevideoisdisplayedon, independentlyofthechartscreen.Thisisusefulifyouwanttoshowthe videosonalargerwallmonitor,whiletheAcuitySystemisonasmaller deskmonitor.Monitor1isthemainmonitor,andMonitor2isthe secondarymonitor.
23.WorthDot
TheWorthDothastwotabs,onetosetsizeandonetosetcolor.

TosetthesizeofeachdotintheWorth4‐Dotdiagram, simplydragtheslidertoresizethepreviewdot,whichprovidesa representationofhowlargeeachdotwillbeintheWorthDottest.
YoucanalsocalibratethecolorsoftheWorth4‐Dottestto matchtheredandgreen^iltersonyourrefractor.Thisiscriticalto ensurepropercancellationwhenadministeringthetest.
