Togoaboutthistopic,thebestideaisprobablytofirstbuildamodel.Wewillbeginbybuildingthestructurebasedontheimagebelow.Whenlookingatthegeneralandcommonlyseenacyclicstructure,youmaynoticethatboththehydrogenatomsandthealcoholgroupsprojecttowardstheviewer.Thismayconfusesomepeoplewhoareusedtothepresenceofonewedgeandonegroupconnectedwithdashedlines.Italsomayappeardeceivingbecausetheimagepresentsthemoleculealmostasifitwereplanar.BuildthemodelsothatthecarbonylisatthetopandtheCH2OHgroupisclosesttothebottom.

Glucoseisapyranose,whichmeansitformsasix‐memberedring.Inthecaseofglucose,thecarbonof

thecarbonylwillbondwiththealcoholofthecarbonjustabovetheCH2OHgroupinordertomakeasixmemberedring.Rememberthatthoughglucosedoes

indeedcontainsixcarbons,itisnotexactlyasixcarbonring.Theringwillconsistoffivecarbonatomsandoneoxygenatom.Thesixthcarbonwillbeanequatorial

branchconnectedtothering.
