Adaptive Safety System

Building on Ford's Personal Safety System,

this innovative technology uses information

from a suite of sophisticated vehicle sensors

to determine crash severity, occupant size,

position and seat belt status.

This information is processed using complex

computer algorithms to provide appropriate

levels of occupant protection using multiple

advanced safety features and enabling them

to work simultaniously to provide enhanced

occupant energy management.

Adaptive Airbag TethersThrough deployment of airbag

tethers, airbag shape and size is controlled to improve occupant

interaction.

Adaptive Load Limiting RetractorsAdaptive load limiting retractors are capable

of multiple levels to tailor their response to the specific needs of each occupant.

Adaptive Airbag Inflation Additional levels of airbag inflation are provided beyond standard dual-stage inflator technology through incorporating a variable time delay between the 1st and 2nd stage output.

Adaptive Steering Column A new steering column design provides two levels of energy absorption. When appropriate, a device pulls a pin in the column, allowing it to "stroke" forward at a different level of resistance.

Adaptive Airbag VentingWhen activated, this unique safety feature

diverts gas away from the airbag. This offers occupants a softer

airbag when required.

Enhanced Occupant Classification SystemIncorporated into the structure of the

passenger seat, this sensor is able to identify the following five stages of

occupant classification: empty seat, child presence, small adult presence, medium

adult presence and large adult presence.

Seat Track Position SensorDriver seat position is monitored

by this sensor and it is used to determine inflator output and

steering column energyabsorption level.
