Young Adults: St. Christopher Young Adults are a group of parishioners ages 18 to 39, single and mar-ried, who are connected by our Catholic faith and who actively participate in the life of the Church. Our mission is to “continue lifelong learning in a Catholic environment through spiritual growth, re-flection, and service as we strengthen our relation with God though each other, our faith, and our com-munity." The group strives to offer the following programmatic components on a rotating basis: faith sharing, social events, and service opportunities. Par-ticipants are also encouraged to get involved with the liturgical ministries at the Parish. Any questions contact: Chris Miller at [email protected] or 408-395-7949

Social Justice The scripture readings during the "Ordinary Time" of the Church's liturgical year focus on teaching us about the spiritual path having been laid out for us by Jesus. Today He calls us to be less judgmental which then opens the heart to compassion and the possibil-ity of inclusiveness and forgiveness. In "The Name of God is Mercy" (pg. 98), Pope Fran-cis suggests that we might focus on the Corporal Works of Mercy, especially during this Holy Year of Mercy: "feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, dress the naked, house the pilgrims, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, bury the dead. I do not think there is much to explain. And if we look at our situa-tion, our society, it seems to me that there is no lack of circumstances or opportunities all around us. " As noted in previous columns, during this election year, as Christians, we might dissect the hyperbole of the candidates' pronouncements to discern how closely the "real message" may or may not be in har-mony with the Corporal Works of Mercy. From Vati-can II's "Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World" (74): "The political community ex-ists, consequently, for the sake of the common good, in which it finds its full justification and significance, and the source of its inherent legitimacy. Indeed, the common good embraces the sum of those conditions of the social life whereby men, families and associa-tions more adequately and readily may attain their own perfection." And ((75) "Political parties, for their part, must promote those things which in their judgment are required for the common good; it is never allowable to give their interests priority over the common good." And, (43) " This council exhorts Christians, as citizens of two cities, to strive to dis-charge their earthly duties conscientiously and in re-sponse to the Gospel spirit." And, (43): "The Chris-tian who neglects his temporal duties, neglects his duties toward his neighbor and even God, and jeop-ardizes his eternal salvation." Some thoughts for prayer and reflection.
