The Region’s voice on Mental Illness
This Is My Brave®, a national non-profit organization, is the leading platform for individuals with lived experience to share their stories of living
successful lives despite a diagnosis of a mental illness. Shows are community-based events held at local theaters, where a cast of individuals share their true stories of living with mental illness through original poetry, music, comedy, dance or personal essay. This Is My Brave is committed to end the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Each time one of us shares
our story, there’s another crack helping to break down the stigma surrounding mental illness.

NAMI would like to thank Christina
Fisanick, Ph.D. for being our guest speaker at the
Annual Candlelight Vigil
at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on October 3rd, 2017
Dear NAMI Members, Welcome to Fall! Winter is not far behind. As we watch the seasons change we need to remember that we
may need to make some changes in our behaviors and routines. It is easy to stop some of our summer activi-
ties as the cold weather arrives and just hibernate. We need to find other activities to replace our warm
weather ones. Indoor activities can include dancing, stretching, easy movement exercises, and gym classes.
Fighting loneliness, grief, depression, and inactivity are ways to maintain our coping, especially during the
holiday season. Being helpful and kind to others can help, as can continuing to be in an attitude of gratitude.
Consider participating in local and community activities and church activities. Remember “It’s OK to Talk”.
Continue to take your medications as prescribed. Finally, reach out to your mental health providers if you
feel you need help.
Congratulations to all the planners and participants for a successful NAMI Walk for Awareness. Beautiful
weather, a sense of commitment, music, activities, selfie booth, and auctions provided the positive benefits to
attendees.
Don’t miss “This is My Brave” on Tuesday November 14 at 7PM at the Capitol Theater. It will be heart-
warming and promote understanding about individuals’ journeys with mental health conditions.
Have a joyful Thanksgiving! May your Christmas be a time of peace and togetherness! Have a Happy New
Year with a sense of hope, mental and physical wellness, love, and friendship. Stay warm and stay connected to others.

In September, the Marian house invited speaker Da-vid A. George to discuss Autism and his experience with the disorder. The house purchased two of his books to use for groups and further discussion.
In August, the Marian House received a letter of ap-preciation from the office of Senator Joe Manchin re-garding calls made by Rosemary and house members regarding the most recent political efforts to repeal and/or rollback safety net programs largely relied upon by persons with mental illness and physical disability.
