On behal o the ASEAN Federation o Endocrinology Societies and the Local
Organizing Committee, we are pleased to invite you to the 16th AFES Conerence,
which will be held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, rom 17 to 20 November 2011. Tis
Conerence will continue the success o the preceding conerences in Bangkok and Kuala
Lumpur, and will provide a legacy or those to come. Te Conerence will be organized by the
AFES and the Vietnamese Association o Diabetes and Endocrinology.
Te theme o this year Conerence is ranslating endocrinology research into clinical care.
With this theme as a guiding principle, the Conerence will have several ocial and satellitesessions on basic and applied research, where the most up-to-date inormation regarding
the science and advances in endocrinology (including diabetes and osteoporosis), and
particularly, clinical care will be presented by leading ASEAN and international scientists.
It is expected that the Conerence will attract more than 1000 participants rom ASEAN
countries. Participants will have the opportunity to reresh their knowledge and to meet and
interact with leading scientists and physicians o endocrinology.
Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon, also known as the Pearl o the Orient, is an economic hub and
cultural center o Vietnam. Saigonese are well-known or their hospitality and riendly people.
In addition to the great Scientic Program, participants will be able to enjoy the impressive
sights, wonderul Saigonese cuisine, and unique Vietnamese culture. From Ho Chi Minh City,
participants can visit great places in northern, central and southern parts o the country.
We hope you will join us or a great Conerence o outstanding science, and take a lit tle extra

Te AFES Organizing Committee welcomes your scientic abstract submission to the 16th
Congress. Abstract must be submitted by Wdd, a 31, 2011 5 p, Hanoi
time. It is your responsibility to ensure that the abstract is entered online by the deadline. All
abstracts must be submitted using the Congress website www.afes2011.org. echnical support

REUNIFICAION PALACE
Reunication Palace ormerly Independence
Palace is one o the city most recognizable
landmarks. Designed by the famboyant and
renowed Vietnamese architect Ngo Viet Tu, the
Palace is the ocial residence and workplace o
the President o South Vietnam during the Vietnam
war and the site o the ocial handover o power
during the Fall o Saigon on April 30, 1975, when
a North Vietnamese Army tank crashed through its
gates, symbolically marking the end o the war.
BEN HANH MARKE
Ben Tanh Market to Vietnamese, or Les HallesCentrales to French, is one o the the Citys
earliest surviving structures. Te Market was
builtinJanuary1913andwentintooperationin
March 1914. It was called Ben Tanh, because
at the time o building, the market was adjacent
to the river bank (Ben) and backed by a ortress
(Tanh). Te architecture is characterized by a
central cupola o 28m in diameter, a belry and
clock in its main entrance, which has become a
symbol o Ho Chi Minh City. Covering 13,062
square meter, the Market has 2,000 stalls and
counters selling a variety o goods, including
souvenir items

American. Te historic street is home to some

NORE DAME CAHEDRAL & POS OFFICE
Te Notre Dame Cathedral,
also known as Saigon
Notre-Dame Cathedral
Basilica, was built between
1863-1880 and ocially
inaugurated on October 7,
1877. All building materials
were imported rom France.
Te Cathedral has two bell
towers, reaching a height o 58 meters. oday,
the Notre Dame Cathedral is not only a religious
place but also ideal area where visitors can
come, take photos and hang out. Te Cathedral is
closed to visitors except during Sunday services,
which are held in Vietnamese and English.
Beside the Cathedral is Saigon Central PostOce, an iconic architecture o Ho Chi Minh
City. Te Saigon Central Post Oce was
designed and built between 1886 and 1891,
by the renowed French engineer and architect
Gustave Eiel, wo also designed te world
amous Eiel ower. Te Central Post Oce has
aGoticarcitecturalstyle,andisconsidered
one o the most elegant and beautiul piece o
colonial architecture in Asia
