Elsebeth Gerner NielsenRektor, Designskolen Kolding
What defines a designer? Evidently, judging from this catalogue presenting Class of 2011, the definition comprises a great number of qualifications and competencies. And if you consider who the graduates are, so it should: They were accepted to Kolding School of design based on their obvious talent. Assisted by many others, the school has now trained them for five years. During this time they have acquired a range of craft skills and have become familiar with design theory and various design methods – for instance, how to conduct user surveys. They have also completed heaps of practical projects individually and in teams. Most of them have been abroad; either as exchange students or job trainees. Finally, all of them have completed internships and witnessed firsthand what it takes to succeed as a designer – including the necessity of keeping budgets and deadlines. Repeatedly, year after year, they have been evaluated by national and international designers. Now, here they are; ready to go out and work as designers. Their talent has been cultivated and refined with the help of talented teachers and researchers but also by great individual efforts – often late into the night. Of course, they can become even better, but they’re ready! Ready to create value for society, for business and public sectors. Fundamentally, designers are able to do two things that almost nobody else can. · Designers are able to visualise; to create concrete, tangible images of what is not.· Designers can investigate and include user needs and wants when developing products,
services, and systems. Apart from this, they are of course able to create amazing objects and experiences. Aesthetics and functionality are (still) values that are very much part of the design profession. I have added ”still” because today, design contributes with so much more than designing. As we research the design processes we are able to derive thinking as well as methods which are applicable outside the traditional realm of the designer. Thus today, design is a significant driver for innovation. Key concepts are design thinking and using design strategically. A few years ago we would hardly have thought to include design in the improvement of the food situation in hospitals, which one of the graduation projects sets out to. However, here as well, designers can contribute with their ability for systematic development and their talent for thinking outside the box. We live in a time where there may be as much need for innovative and holistic thinking as for developing new products. Designers can contribute considerably to meeting this need. On behalf of Kolding School of Design I want to congratulate Class of 2011 as well as all of you who will enjoy ”our” talented, wild, dedicated, funny, strategically thinking – and much much more – designers.
Our recent graduates are communication designers who have a broad grounding in the design discipline – but who also possess specific professional specialisations within the fields of graphic design, illustration, and interaction design. They have been getting their hands dirty in the practical aspects of design and have immersed themselves in the theory and method of the discipline. As a result the odd, elusive thought and the oblique angle they brought with them on the first day of school have been challenged, sustained and elaborated throughout their five years at Kolding School of Design. They are the designers of communication for the future applying letters, images, drawings, video, animation, sounds, codes, shapes, objects, space, processes, and action. The new communication designers can be the fly on the wall – or the fly in your soup. They believe in the power of storytelling and the magic to be found in everyday life, and they are experts at transforming these into analogue, digital, sensory and spatial experiences, where functionality and aesthetics merge in the most exquisite manner. They are aware that they are tasked with designing communication between and to people locally and globally, in collaboration with other disciplines, and they take their social, ethical, moral and human responsibility seriously. We are very proud to present these new talents.

This subdivision of communication design designs complex information. We create the required contexts, and we tell the good story in such a way that it will be noticed, absorbed and remembered. We design material as well as immaterial points of contact between the user and the communicator, and we focus on development, planning and production of communication, both theoretically and practically. The output of our effort includes publications, identity design, layout, branding, service design, movies, animation, and script design.

This subdiscipline designs the unique story by means of the personal imagery, the inclusive storytelling, the touching presentation, and the vibrant stroke. The story or the plot is illustrated through drawings in books, animations on the Internet, patterns on the walls, photos displayed in the street scene, games on the mobile phone, or films in the cinema, and they acquire that additional dimension and perspective which makes the message relevant and meaningful. People’s curiosity is roused, and associations enhance their comprehension and experience.

Interaction, the third branch of communication design, designs the dialogue between people, objects, systems, media and space with the incorporation of technology as a fascinating new design material with which we experiment to the widest extent possible. Our point of departure is the individual and its sensory and other experiences, and needs. The individual is at the centre of our interdisciplinary approach to designing the interactions, experiences and dialogues of present, everyday life as well as the future, in the form of concepts, services, software, user interfaces, objects, furniture, robots and spatial concepts.

Institut for Produktdesign
Department of Product Design
The Department of Product Design comprises the disciplines fashion, textile, and industrial design. Common to all three disciplines is that the final design solutions most often create tangible, physical products. Thus, knowledge of production and related issues is a key element in the instruction at the Department of Product Design. In a world of limited resources designers have a clear obligation to incorporate sustainability into all phases of the design process. Designers are tasked with developing products which, through their form, function and artistic expression, will persuade the user to choose that specific product, making the sustainable choice the obvious one. Designers’ products are part of a changeable world. Hence, they have to direct their design at the needs of the present as well as the future. At the Kolding School of Design these needs are uncovered in our comprehensive instruction in method and research. In order to ensure a solid and varied knowledge base all teachers are researchers and active designers, which guarantees that all instruction is grounded in the practical world of design as well as in the stateoftheart knowledge gleaned from design research. This approach enables the students to decode and transform emerging trends and needs into a unique artistic expression. Business collaboration is incorporated into the instruction, for mutual benefit.

In a time of transition from an industrial society to a knowledge and communicationbased society, industrial design as a discipline finds itself in an exciting period of upheaval. The focus is on design solutions which incorporate function, form and production opportunities into one collective design solution. Industrial design students study classic design disciplines such as sketching, 3D programming and model making, but they also spend more and more of their time on overall concepts focusing on the future of the users as well as immaterial values and aspects of the products. Hence, user observation and mapping of consumers’ behavioural patterns have become core subjects in the instruction.

The Formula 1 WatchThis watch is a so-called “Driving Watch”. This means, it is inspired by the world of cars – in this case, the Formula 1 of the 60’s. The inspiration is evident in the shape, in the colour, and in the fonts of the watch. In addition, the watch serves as a tribute to Italian race driver Lorenzo Bandini, who was killed in a Formula 1 race in Monaco in the 60’s.
2 eng The Simple BassThe bass is intended for hip hop bass players, and thus, the design keywords are masculine simplicity. The bass is cut from a single piece of wood and as such, there are no joints, no glue, and no screws.

In the fashion discipline form, identity, and function have a chance to flourish. The discipline focuses primarily on designing clothing which decodes, mirrors and reflects the present. The instruction takes its point of departure in individual and original research into form, expression and material. Thus, a space is created where thoughts, experiments, reflections and intuition are free to roam in the constant slipstream of trends, which also characterises fashion. In this division of production design the students are taught draping, sewing techniques and pattern development to the extent required to be able to develop and visualise design solutions. Form development and materials knowledge are part of the core subjects of the curriculum, and the students learn to build entire collections aimed at target groups and production facilities.

New Old – Old NewThe project is based on the transition from “old luxury” to “new luxury”, where the definition of luxury and trends has been softened, and there is not just one kind of luxury. BA projekt- The Perfect Man.

The graduation project is a collection of jackets inspired by things belonging to one another, objects or people. The collection also includes shoes designed in collaboration with Ecco. The collection is directed at men and women both and intended as a ”set”.

In the textile discipline the students work with the classic tools of the textile fields: weaving, knitting and print. The focus is on developing new design within the design areas fashion and interior design. However, there is an increasing emphasis on transforming textile values into new contexts and technologies. Hence, digital instructional tools have gained a footing at the department and are now considered equally important as the analogue techniques. How the consumer experiences and feels the textile, the physical encounter between the user and the surface or the product are issues being explored in depth within the textile discipline. Based on the textile designers’ professional knowledge about tactile elements and the development of surface design a whole new field of activity is opening up, where the textile designers can apply their competencies to the creation of material surfaces other than yarn and fabric, e.g. glass, steel and concrete.
