About the club:
Calligraphy is a visual artform practiced in almost every culture. Famous examples include religious writings
in Arabic, East Asian poetry in characters, palm leaf books in India and Mayan hieroglyphs.
Calligraphy can be defined as ‘’the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious, and skilful
manner’’. In Dutch fun club we will focus on the western style of calligraphy, and factors such as the
rhythm and regularity of letters. We also briefly discuss and if possible practice techniques used in other
cultures. During one of the classes we will make our own ink using ancient methods.
All students are welcome to the calligraphy club, and even students which normally have poor handwriting
are able to learn the basics of calligraphy. The club should however not be seen as a way to remedy poor
handwriting
About the teacher
Bart is a year 6 teacher and practices calligraphy as a

pieces and theory games as well as improvisation exercises, imagination games and different
genres like jazz, boogie-woogie and musicals. Through the improvisation and imagination
exercises a child not only feels more close and comfortable with the instrument they are
playing but also develops much quickly with regard to musical thinking, and an open and
brave approach to the instrument.”

Percussion (drums) and Bagpipes
Maarten Vugs
Maarten, a Dutch native and former German language teacher, began playing percussion at
the age of 6 in a small town near Tilburg here in the Netherlands. In addition to here at Rivers,
he teaches at a music school in Kaatsheuvel where he also conducts the percussion
ensemble. He continues to perform with symphony orchestras.
Maarten is a talented bagpipe player and is currently the music director for the “Dutch Pipes
and Drums” organisation which performs throughout the year in Europe and abroad.
“I love to work with children as their enthusiasm inspire me a great deal. I love to share my
knowledge in teaching them how to play percussion. It is wonderful to see how children play
music together which will, I believe, result in a better understanding of others and knowing
how function in a team. Therefore, I am happy to teach children individually or in small
groups. It is my ambitions to create groups with many different instruments.
In my opinion music is a key element in the development of children. The effect of playing a
musical instrument or singing are often underestimated. Music unites people

Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Bass guitar
Jascha Wonerow
Guitar/Bass lessons for children of any age, contact me for more information and/or a free
trial lesson
Recently graduated guitarist Jascha Wonerow finished his Bachelor’s degree at the ArtEZ
Jazz&Pop department here in Arnhem. Starting at the age of twelve, Jascha soon found out
that playing guitar was more than just a hobby. In his journey of making it his profession he
was taught by several well-known guitarists such as Frank Sichmann, Onno Kelk and Henk
van Benthem. Along the way he started teaching guitar and bass at a music school in Bocholt,
Germany and since late 2015 he also gives lessons at the AIS. Furthermore, Jascha is
involved in several bands (check YXC on spotify) and projects where he not only plays, but is
also involved in the promotion and management.
"I believe that the most important goal in any teaching practice is to inspire students and
show them the joy of music. Without it, any technical or theoretical progress is meaningless
as music is a very personal subject. For this reason, I focus my lessons on what the children
want while simultaneously looking for ways to incorporate technique and theory in a fun and
easy way. Depending on the level of the student we will also work on songs chosen by the
students themselves."
