Cancellation/Makeup DaysDays when one-hour and two-hour late openings or early dismissals occur (becauseof bad weather or other emergencies) do not need to be made up. On days whenschool is cancelled, a makeup day will be added to the schedule. Makeup days arelisted in the calendar. They will be used in the following order, if needed: June 14, 15,16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25.

The Avon Grove Board of School Directorsconsists of nine members, three from eachregion (see map at right), who are eachelected to a four-year term of office. Boardmembers serve without compensation andhave the primary task of formulating andevaluating all policies necessary for theoperation of the school district.
The Board of School Directors meetings areusually scheduled the second and fourthThursdays of each month; however,occasionally there are exceptions. For amore detailed and up-to-date calendar ofBoard and committee meetings, seewww.avongrove.org.
Most Board meetings are scheduled to beheld in the Avon Grove Intermediate SchoolAudion. Each regular business meeting isadvertised in the legal section of the localnewspapers.

The five townships and two boroughs that comprise the Avon Grove School District are divided intothree regions for election of the school directors. Residents of Franklin Township and London BritainTownship comprise Region I. Region II is comprised of Penn Township, New London Township, andVoting District #1 (pink) of West Grove Borough. London Grove Township, Avondale Borough, andVoting District #2 (maroon) of West Grove Borough comprise Region III.
From Our School NursesEmergency Information — Keep all changes in phone numbers — home andwork — current with each building’s nurse. This information is importantfor notifying parents and/or designated emergency contacts whenquestions or concerns arise during the school day.
Medication Policy — For student safety, a comprehensive medicationadministration policy is in effect. A complete copy of the policy may beobtained through the school nurse or viewed on the District’s Web site.See www.avongrove.org and click on the School Board Policies link.
Highlights from AGSD’s Medication Administration Policy:• All medications (prescription and over-the-counter) must be in their original containers
and clearly labeled with name and instructions for administering.
• Only medications prescribed by a health care provider and accompanied by writteninstructions from that provider will be given during school hours. Written instructions fromthe parent or guardian are also required.
• All medications must be brought to the school nurse’s office immediately upon arrival atschool.
• Every effort should be made to give all doses of medication at home.
Immunizations — Pennsylvania state law requires the immunizations listedhere. Students who do not have these immunizations will not be allowed toattend school.

New PA State Immunization Requirements for 2010-2011Please be advised that beginning in the 2010-2011 school year, studentsmust have additional immunizations in order to enter 7th grade. They are:• 2 doses of varicella (chickenpox) or a history of chickenpox• 1 dose of Tdap (if 5 years has elapsed since last tetanus immunization)• 1 dose of MCV (meningococcal conjugate vaccine)
Attendance PolicyGood attendance is essential for success at school. Every effort should bemade to be in school each day that it is in session. The following are theonly reasons that a student will be excused from school: illness, death inimmediate family, religious holidays, health care appointments, educationalfamily trips, urgent family reasons, and court appearances.
Students who are absent must bring a signed note from a parent orguardian (please include the student’s name, the date(s) of absence, andthe reason) upon returning to school. Excuse notes must be receivedwithin three school days.
If you know that your child must be out for a trip, a note to the principalrequesting permission to be absent from school must be sent for approvalat least one week in advance; otherwise, it will be an unexcused absence.
Absences are monitored and calls are made to parents of absent studentsto confirm the reason for the absence.
School Visitations/Volunteers
• Parents are encouraged to visit the schools. • There are various opportunities to volunteer during the school day. • Sign in to obtain a visitor’s badge anytime you enter a school building. • Please call in advance to schedule appointments with teachers to
discuss specific issues.• Building-level administrators are responsible for ensuring that all
volunteers having direct contact with children shall undergo andcomplete criminal background and child abuse clearance checks prior toserving. Such clearances are to be maintained by the principal at eachschool. After filing appropriate receipts, volunteers shall be reimbursedthe cost of these clearances one time only, i.e., $10 for the Act 34clearance, $10 for the Act 151 clearance, and $40 for the FBI clearance,if necessary.

Maintenance of Records Concerning Students with DisabilitiesNotices of Recommended Educational Placement, IEPs, Permissions to Evaluateand Reevaluate, and Evaluation Reports will be maintained for a period of twoyears beyond the date on which the student attains age twenty-one, after whichthe District will no longer consider the records to be educationally relevant. Testpapers, progress monitoring data, and work samples will be maintained throughthe conclusion of the school year during which they are collected, after which theDistrict will no longer consider them to be educationally relevant. Discipline logsand notes, other than those concerning acts of violence or drug and alcoholoffenses, will be maintained until such time as the student transitions from oneschool building within the District to another, after which the District will nolonger consider them to be educationally relevant. All test protocols and raw datafrom evaluations conducted to determine eligibility for special education and aspart of reevaluations thereafter will maintained for a period of ten business daysafter the distribution of the Evaluation Report, after which the District will nolonger consider them to be educationally relevant. The District may destroy any
record that it has designated as no longer educationally relevant at any time, and itmust destroy such records when requested to do so, in writing, by the parent of thestudent or by the student if age 18 or older. Avon Grove School District ChildfindIf you believe that your child may be in need of a special education program, anevaluation process to assess your child’s needs is available at no cost to familiesresiding within the District. A special education program often involves adaptingmaterials and modifying instruction to better meet your child’s specific learningneeds.
If you request these services, your child will receive an evaluation from a team ofexperts trained in assessing children. This team will determine if your child has adisability and, if so, is in need of special education. You are an important member ofyour child’s evaluation team.
