Let’s look at new ways to practice “a new lifestyle”. COVID-19 is transmitted to others through droplet infection or contact. There are also cases of infections being caused by contact with people who have the virus, but show no symptoms of infection. Because of this, we cannot know where and when the virus will appear around us, and eliminating the virus is expected to take some time. The State of Emergency has been lifted, but this does not mean that it is safe. Please continue to cooperate with preventative measures such as hand washing, cough/sneeze etiquette, and avoiding the “3 C’s (close contact, closed spaces, crowded places).Every person’s actions throughout everyday life and in the workplace will effect the spread of the virus, so please think about the following;
●Using mail order and electronic payments

●Holding meetings online●Going shopping alone where possible, when stores aren’t crowded●Working in staggered shifts or from home●Trading business cards online ●Avoiding conversations during meals ●Planning shopping before going, finishing as soon as possible ●Leaving distance between people when lining up at the register●Avoiding conversations on public transport ●Not sharing glasses/cups, not facing other people●Using delivery or take-out services rather than eating out●Visiting parks when there is no one else there●Avoiding ceremonial occasions with a large number of guests●When gathering with others, ventilating the space and wearing masks

▼ Introducing Aizu’s rich history and culture
Our theme in this issue is “The Castle Tower of Tsurugajo Castle”.
The tower of Tsurugajo Castle, known otherwise as Wakamatsujo Castle, is a symbol of the city. There are around 50,000 castles throughout Japan, but of those only 120 have a tower keep. Wakamatsujo Castle has a five-tiered tower. Of all the examples of five-tiered castle towers throughout Japan, the first one built was Azuchi Castle (6 stories above ground, with one basement level), erected in 1579 by Oda Nobunaga. The last to be built was Wakamatsujo Castle, in 1639 by Kato Akinari. The shogunate only officially recognised a few such castle towers, and the current castle tower of Hirosaki Castle is the refurbished Honmaru Tatsumi tower (after the original five-tiered keep was destroyed by fire in 1627). Shirakawa Kominejo Castle and Yonezawajo Castle were not recognised as tower keeps, but as three-tiered turrets. According to a diary written by a visitor to the castle in 1845, Wakamatsujo Castle’s tower keep was used as a warehouse for storing weapons, with thousands of guns on the first floor, and hundreds and thousands of boxes containing other weapons and armour on the upper floors. In TV dramas there are often scenes in which the lord of the castle looks out from the top of his tower, but it seems that in reality he rarely climbed the tower, living in the inner palace (honmaru goten) instead.
