6:00PM
Dear Friends,
When confronted with a potentially
volatile situation involving strongly differing
opinions among individuals or groups of people, I
always remind myself and others of the saying,
“Facts are facts, but opinion is absolute!” Perhaps
you have been involved in discussions like that? It
seems to me this has become a daily occurrence in
my life and in the lives of those who wish to explain
and or defend their religious, political, or scientific
beliefs, just to name a few “hot topics.”
This weekend representatives from the
Massachusetts Catholic Conference will be
collecting signatures to prevent citizens’ tax dollars
from being used to fund abortions in
Massachusetts as enshrined in the state
constitution. Needless to say, there are strong
opinions on both sides of the fence, however, no
matter what the opinion is, if it does not conform to
the Gospel then, for the Catholic Christian, it is not
a well-formed opinion. While the topic of abortion
on demand is in front of us every day, in order for
us to be informed of this topic we cannot simply
rely on 30 second sound bites or the talking heads
on television. Each person must argue from
a position of knowledge, not just feelings or ill
formed opinions.
The late Cardinal Joseph Bernadine of
Chicago wrote a letter to his people many years ago
called, “The Seamless Garment” in reference to the
tunic Jesus would have worn. There were no seams
to tear it apart. Cardinal Bernadine defined being
”Pro-Life” as being the person who defends human
life from its beginning to its natural end. Not
everyone agreed with his approach, even some of
his fellow Bishops and Cardinals publicly disagreed
with him. There is certainly a lot of responsibility
on the part of society and the Church, especially the
Church, to examine how well we are doing in this
area. In my mind and in my heart, I believe the
only real solution is to do the heavy lifting of love
as Jesus would have us do. Vitriolic
condemnations never amount to anything. Only
true sacrificial love can turn us around.
Peace, Fr. Michael
Please remember in your prayers
Michael Boucher, Marilyn Fava,
and Erna Mascitti
May they rest in peace, and may
their families find comfort from
their faith in Jesus Christ.
On Sunday, October 20th after the 11:45 Mass,
everyone is invited to attend the blessing and
dedication of the Mike Hackett Memorial and the
Blessing of the Pieta statue. Many of you will
remember Mike as the faithful caretaker of the
parish property for many years. He had a great gift
and talent for giving us an Irish green lawn! The
Pieta was given to us by the Venerini Sisters who
had it on their Prospect St. property in Fitchburg
before it was sold. Please come celebrate the
goodness of it all!

Grade 8 "HEROES FOR THE KINGDOM"

Please plan on eating supper before
arriving. A tasty treat will be provided!
Important: Please indicate your child’s
attendance for the retreats by filling out the
form, and have your student bring the slip to
class, or simply email [email protected].
It is our experience that students who attend
retreats make meaningful connections between
Religious Ed class, Church and their Faith.
Students who attend retreats tend to stay the
course, become volunteers in High School,
helping with retreats and ultimately develop a
deeper relationship with Christ. That is our
prayer. We consider the retreats an important
part of faith formation and therefore a vital part
of our religious education course. So, we ask
that each student make every possible attempt
to be present. Thank you!

MICHELLE LUTTER
DIRECTOR OF
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
As I reflect on the past month and how wonderfully busy it has
been getting ready to welcome 375 students into our Religious
Education program, I am overwhelmed and humbled by the
enthusiasm of the staff and the 80 volunteers that will be assist-
ing us in sharing the “Good News” of the Gospels with our stu-
dents. We have had parent meetings; catechist meetings, high
school meetings and this past week welcomed the children into
our classrooms and into our hearts. This year our theme is
JOY. Joy is the Echo of God’s life within us. This theme
stemmed from the excitement and joy we experienced from
each of the yes’s we have received when we asked, Will you
teach again this year? Can you help a student who struggles a
little bit in the classroom? Can you help us with attendance?
Could you please come in and help us set up classrooms, copy
this, fold that, tie these ribbons? Can you help cook a meal for
our High School students? The response over and over was
Yes! We could see how joyful each person was to respond this
way. We are truly blessed as a staff, and how truly blessed the
students will be. During the Catechist meeting teachers shared
with each other their experiences and why they love what they
do. To paraphrase one teacher ‘there is nothing like it when
you see a student connect the thought with the heart and really
get what you are presenting to them’, or when a student greets
them in the store like they are a Rock Star. Many of the Cate-
chists express how they also learn so much from their students,
how open they are to what God is revealing to them. We are so
very grateful for the parents that bring their children to us work-
ing together to share our faith and teach them our catholic tradi-
tions. It is my joy and my honor as I am speaking to our new
families, young parents about how we are not just a community
here at Our Lady of the Lake, we are family and each of us
bring our gifts to share and support each other. Raising my
children within this parish has been a true gift in my life, and I
speak with great honesty and excitement when I get to share
this with others. I am so very pleased that we have been able to
offer our Catechists enrichment opportunities to enhance the
experiences in the classroom for both teacher and student; we
have several Catechists that are on their way to receiving cate-
chist certification. This Year we hosted our first meet and
greet First Grade parent and student pizza dinner and what fun
it was to see our young disciples discover how important they
are to our church by placing their picture inside a their colorful,
sparkled, well decorated church cut outs. We look forward to
doing this again next year and we thank the families that partici-
pated. The Joy we felt by their smiles and warmth was over-
whelming. This year in grades 1-5 we will be ending class
gathered together upstairs with their families, to sing together,
laugh together and pray together. Let us give thanks for our
High School students who return this year to continue their
journey in relationship with Jesus and how wonderful it is to
witness them take ownership in liturgies roles during the 6pm
mass. All 80 of us are so looking forward to what this year is
going to bring to from our littlest one to our students who are
about to be confirmed. Lots of Joyful, wonderful experiences to
look forward to. I ask that you pray for our children, our Cate-
chists and many volunteers. It is through their work the King-
dom of God is revealed. Peace be with you, Michelle Lutter
