From the Director's Desk ...
Dear Alumnus
Greetings!
One day a farmer, walking down the street in a
small town came across a large stone in the middle of
his path. The farmer complained: “Who could be so
careless as to leave such a big stone on the road? Why
does someon e not remove it?” He wen t away
complaining. The next day, the same thing happened
with a milkman. He too went away grumbling but left
the stone as it was. Then one day, a student came across
the stone. Worried that someone may fall over it and
hurt oneself, he decided to push is aside. He pushed long
and hard all by himself and eventually managed to
remove the stone from the path. He came back and
noticed a piece of paper where the stone was kept. He
picked the paper and opened it. Inside was written, “You
are the true wealth of the nation.”
Without any doubt, I can boldly say that, not like
the passersby in the story above, but like the student,
you are the true wealth of the world, nation and the
Alumni Association.
During the past few months, I came into contact
with number of Josephites. I appreciate al l their
enthusiasm and assurance to help the Association in
their own capacity.

The Ignatian MAGIS Endures
Recently someone who knew the Jesuits said, “if
the Jesuits would dare to be as different today as they
were 450 years ago, if they would have the guts to do
the practical things they need to do; to meet the new
challenges of the 21st century, then the world will be
different”. This insight made me reflect. An active Jesuit
alumnus of St. Joseph’s, whom I happened to meet after
a decade echoed similar sentiments. What is the secret
of this ‘dare to be different’? It is none other than the
MAGIS. The alumnus I met, was apologetic and said in a
subdued tone “today Jesuits seem to feel that the order
is theirs. It is not. It is ours. The Jesuits belong to us and
to the Church. It is the “MAGIS” that inspired a 16th
Century vision to Ignatius of Loyola which transformed
the world then. It is the same vision of the 16th century
that would energise and create a new world of the 21st
century”
The Ignatian Magis that endured for four centuries
needs a reawakening now. The Magis today resurrects
as creativity and excellence, an empathy and praxis,
collaboration, networking and sharing of resources to
build a better world, a Green Planet worthy of the
Creator, who created a Garden in the Cosmos. The same
Magis will create a New and Green Planet that will
become a home f or a l l echoing t he convenant a l
10
relationship of Yahwah and Noah with men and every
living being. Magis also will drive every Jesuit alumnus
to build bridges of solidarity, based on dignity, self-worth
to wipe away the tears from the poor among the humans
and the poor among the non humans that are imperiled
in this broken planet.
In the wor ld , as the Jesu its are dwindl ing
numerically, the role of the alumni becomes more vital
and indispensable. Worldwide there are several million
Jesuit alumni. We have power. More power than we
realize. This power of Jesuits and the alumni with their
power of reason, not the power of power could propel
Jesuits and the alumni to make bolder moves. The 34th
General Congregation which the recently concluded
Congregation also reemphasized, advocated active ‘lay
collaboration’. The alumni and Jesuits need to become
persons who are ‘passionate, innovative, propelling,
driving, pushing, almost blowing like an untamed
hurricane, for the greater good of the people and the
world that shelters all of us. Shall we dare!.

Alumni Reunion
Alumni Reunion of 1988 - 1990 (13) & 1989 -
1991 (16) batches took place on 16.08.2009 in the
campus. Fr. Principal and the director attended and
encouraged the alumni. The uniqueness of the
reunion was that all of them had come with their
family members.

I am happy to pen down this message on the
occasion of bringing out yet another issue of the
Newsletter by the Alumni Association of St.Joseph’s
college (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli.
The statement that every institution is known by
its alumni fits SJC very well. Only an institution like ours
can take pride in having wide array of alumni ranging
from members at the UNO and the President of the
country to various distinguished luminaries occupying
positions of eminence in various walks of life. The
numerous alumni of our college would like to know the
present scenar io prevai l ing in the col lege an d a
newsletter is the only link that helps them to know about
the various facets of the present St.Joseph’s. This
newsletter contains matters which will help the alumnus
to update their information about the college. In tune
to the times, St.Joseph’s is also constructing new
buildings and updating the existing facilities to cater to
the current trends in science and technology. Several
changes have been wrought and this issue would help
you know all the events that have taken place recently.
I congratulate the energetic Director of the Alumni
Association Rev.Fr S Mariadoss SJ, on taking efforts in
bringing out this newsletter.
I wish every Josephite all success.

“ I passed out of St Joseph’s in 1975. I was a New
Hosteler and I consider those four years spent in the
college as one of the best phases of my life.
Life contains many ups and downs but what my
Alma Mater taught me was to face the ups with
equanimity and the downs with character. The discipline
that the strict professors and the wardens instilled in me
has stood the test of time. We also had plenty of fun
during our college days. I still recall very fondly how we
managed to bunk afternoon sessions and go to Gaiety
theatre for a matinee show.
I was the captain of the college tennis team,
President of the College Rotaract Club as well as the
co l lege Un ion Secretary-t he col lege gave equ al
importance to both curricular and extra curricular
activities.
Hostel life was even more pleasant. None of us in
the hostel ever felt home sick. The atmosphere was
friendly and the food in the hostel mess was superb. The
focus was not only on studies-though this was taken
seriously, the college gave us ample opportunities to
nurture our hidden talents. I still cherish all my college
friends. I am in touch with many of them.
One realizes the importance of your alma mater
only when you step into the big bad world.
13
My advice to the young Josephites is that when you
are there soak up the wonderful ambience the college
provides you and take with you the comrader ie ,
discipline, sharing, a thought for the millions not so
fortunate as you, and the strength to face the odds when
the chips are down.”
The Department of Economics organised a meeting

to specialize in Economics and Communication skills.
Personal skills include the psychological behaviour of a
person. He pointed out the exclusive jobs opportunities
for Economics graduates in TNPSC. He spoke about the
avai labi l i ty of pr ivat e jobs through Employment
Exchange. Many students were very happy to know these
opportunities.

Johnson S (MCA :1990-93)
from US
I have been living in the Washington Metropolitan
District since 1996. I did my MCA at SJC, Trichy between
1990-93. Besides my career as Enterprise Systems
Architect/CEO, I am involved in quite a few volunteer
works such as being the Secretary of Germantown
Kingsview Vil lage Homeowner Associat ion, Tamil
Teacher of Washington Tamil Sangam and lead of
Josephite Alumni google group. I usually visit India
during Summer Holidays. When I planned to visit India
this time, I decided to visit SJC. By God’s grace, I
received encouraging and supportive guidance through
a good companion, none other than Alumni Director Fr.
Mariadoss SJ. At this juncture I must thank Fr. Mariadoss
SJ, Fr. P.Susai, S.J., Rector and all other people whom I
met during my visit. It’s been 15 years since I visited
the campus (visited the campus for my convocation in
1994). So it was a thrilling, memorable and exciting
moment of visiting the SJC Campus.
I had a very tight schedule to visit several places due
to time constraints. I reached Trichy in the early morning
of Friday June 5th. I made an appointment with Fr.
Mariadoss SJ at 7 AM and met him at the Fathers
Residence. After meeting him and Fr. Rector, I was
invited for breakfast. I was very impressed with their
15
hospitality towards an alumnus like me. The Dosa and
the Chutney / Sambar reminded me the taste that I
enjoyed at the New Hostel. Really SJC cooks are doing a
wonderful job in making authentic Indian food (If
anybody starts a restaurant in USA, I would recommend
hiring St. Joseph’s cook). There are stories that the cooks
in St. Joseph’s have inherited the cultinary art down the
generations. Next time I will plan to take my whole family
to visit the campus if time permits. It was a very thrilling
experience which reminded me of old memories in
'Autograph' movie style. I felt very cool inside the
campus midst a hot summer weather. This is due to lots
of trees (especially neem trees) and plants. Maintaining
the garden in this busiest city is not fun.
I saw the new library and the St. Joseph’s Institute of
Management (JIM) buildings surrounded by flower
garden and green grassy lawns. The new Aruppe Library
looked like a heart of the premises with its magnificent
and gigantic architecture. I could feel how much SJC
management might have gone through the challenge in
constructing such a great building. I really appreciate
the hard work and dedication of those people who
renovate and maintain the campus beautifully. The new
main entrance was looking great with beautiful road,
curbs and street level garden and trees. The direction
boards were very new and noticed several public notice
boards. The college emblem with the logo on the ground
renders special attraction to the campus. However, some
of the buildings with the old architecture are still the
same and it was looking great and strong. Each building
has its own history. There are additional play grounds
ins ide th e New Hostel which I be l ieve is a good
16
opportunity for the students to practice Basketball or
any other games which improves their esteem and
sports. Since I visited the campus during the holiday
season, I couldn’t see any activity inside the campus.
I took several pictures of the campus and published into
the Josephi te google group at h ttp: //
picasaweb.google.com/josephites.trichy. The best thing
that I liked most was the picture posted with the phrase
“Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so
much”. This phrase is suitable to fellow Josephites. Fr.
MD and I discussed several matters during the visit. The
following are the main highlights:
1) Start a Josephite US chapter and create a web link
with the Josephite Alumni site
2) Make al l the Alumni quarter ly newsletter in a
electronic format and send it over the group
3) Become an Alumni Life member (fee Rs. 500) or
Patron (fee Rs. 2000).
4) Proposed idea to have a guest house for Alumni who
visit SJC
5) Invite more Josephites to get into the network and
assure more help to and from the Alma mater
As a member of the SJC Alumni, I would like to help
the Alma Mater in whatever way I can. I would say these
to other fellow Josephites. “United we stand, divided
we fall”. So let’s get together, expand our network and
support our Alma mater and build a new chapter. There
are many things that we could do with our abilities.
I hope the coming years would bring more prosperity to
our initiatives. May GOD Bless SJC and the Josephites.

FIFTH WORLD CONGRESS OF
JESUIT ALUMNI/AE:22-27 July 2009
About 450 delegates representing 35 countries
converged in the beautiful lake city of Bujumbura, the
capital of the Republic of Burundi in the continent of
Africa, to participate in the Fifth World Congress of Jesuit
Alumni/ae which was held from July 22 to 27, 2009
focusing on Africa with the theme, ‘Witnesses to Hope.
Jesuit Aumuni/ae for Better Africa: What have we done?
What are we doing? What must we do?’
Bujumbura known as the land of a thousand and
one hills and of the Sacred Drum is a neighbour of
Rwanda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo
spewing heat of only 25 deg Celcius in the prime
summer. Bujumbura was blessed with a pleasant and
temperate climate during the conference days which
of fered th e mu ch n eeded ambien ce t o act ive ly
participate in the proceedings of the Congress. A big lake
called lake Tanganyika which is 675 km long, 30 km broad
and 1.5 km deep and fed by several rivers adds to the
natural beauty of the land.
Africa is characterized by political turbulence, acute
hunger and the AIDS pandemic and Burundi is not spared
from such malaise. At this juncture it is worth mentioning
that Africa does not figure in the list of WHO listed
countries infected by swine flu. Although most of the
delegates had arrived at the venue with highly fossilized
and deep-rooted perceptions, mostly negative, of Africa,
yet at the end of the Congress we, the delegates, saw a
18
dramatic change in our perceptions and views we had
entertained of the people of Africa. That they have a rich
cu ltura l h er i t age , th at t hey are very warm and
affect ionate and that they are very dynamic and
hardworking are but of the few new perceptions gained
of the people.
During a three-and-a-half-hour cultural programme
performed by a group of 50 students which were marked
with variety depicting diversity of their rich cultures, one
that filled every eye with tears was a one-hour long ballet
or a musical play bringing out very effectively their
century-long struggle for liberation from the clutches of
colonial rule that had successfully established divide-
and-rule mentality pitting one group against the other,
though both of same ethnic identity, oppressive political
system, illiteracy, malnutrition, hunger, chronic illness
etc.
African students are hardworking and committed
to the cause. Most of the present generations grew up
in a situation of constant political conflict triggering large
scale violence which resulted in the killing of 5 million
people. Therefore, trauma is writ largely on many faces;
they need to be de-traumatized. I feel that in this painful
socio-political and economic scenario, the choice of
Burundi as host country itself is a big step in the efforts
of Jesuit Alumni/ae to garner their support to Africa.
Th e Congress opened with a grand, so lemn
inaugural Mass on 23rd July 2009 and a series of good
presentations focusing on the strengths and concerns of
Africa which followed thereafter. The highlights of the
19
presentations are as follows:
1. Potentials which outweigh the problems in Africa.
2. The Jesuit General Congregation 34 meeting in 1994
made a clear commitment to making Africa a
“priority” (GC 34, 17 & 61, GC 35 : 39(i)).
3. This GC-affirmed priority was understood by the
Alumni Congress to mean giving the first place to
(i) clear understanding of Africa, (ii) committed
respect for Africa, and (iii) efficient response to
Africa.
4. Conf l i ct , which h as d evastat ed t he Afr ican
continent since Independence are, according to
many analysts, one of the restraints to its economic
take off and its development. Even today, peace
building in Africa is still a major challenge; violent
conflicts are still going on.
5. The future of the world depends on the future of
Africa. Think about it, pray about it, and talk about
it.
6. The German Federal President Hans Kohler stated,
“In my view, the humanity of the world can be
measured against the fate of Africa.”
7. The World Congress threw a challenge to the
Alumni/ae spread all over the globe to have the
wisdom and the courage to be witnesses to hope
and with God’s good help face up the challenge.
Father Superior General Adolfo Nicolas gave the clarion
the call to the alumni/ae to be open to the rich diversity,
to create atmosphere of diversity at the early years of
schooling so as to grow in the attitude of respect,
20
appreciation, patience, tolerance and acceptance. He
added that he dreams of synergy between alumni/ae and
Jesuits. He also invited us to revisit structures in our
associations and adapt and modify them for effective
collaboration. He finally insisted on (i) in-depth analysis
of everything we do, (ii) creativity as the world is
ch anging f ast , and ( i i i ) st rong and d eep- root ed
spirituality. He concluded his address saying that alumni/
ae must be active, collaborative, creative and inclusive.
India recorded the highest number of delegates to
the Congress – 9 Jesuits and 11 alumni/ae - and made a
prompt but significant contribution towards drawing up
of action plans by way of follow-up of the Congress.

STAFF RETIRED IN MAY 2009
Dr. X. Rosario Rajkumar, HoD of Chemistry
Dr. X. Rosario Rajkumar has served the department
of Chemistry and the institution for more than three
decades with utmost devotion and dedication. As an
outstanding teacher of Chemistry, he had no other
concern besides teaching. His piety and love for music
found a beautiful admixture with his teaching of
Chemistry. He leads an exemplary life of simple devotion
towards any task assigned to him. The unique expansion
which the staff members had coined for his term as HoD
is "Helper of the Department". As a strict disciplinarian,
he believed in the values of punctuality, integrity and in
the noble quality of completing the task assigned to him
within the stipulated time. As a true Josephite, he had
spent most of his time in the campus in the task of
helping students in their learning abilities, guiding
research scholars in pursuance of higher knowledge in
Chemistry and also in publishing research papers in
various reputed journals. His sincerity and hardwork is
phenomenal. As a violinist, he had regaled the staff and
students on every Teachers' Day celeberations with his
mellifluous music. He had the unique habit of wishing
everyone success at all times, which only reflected his
incorrigible positive outlook in life. He had the noble
quality of accepting people as they are and maintaining
excellent interpersonal relationship with one and all.
The Department of Chemistry would be missing this
dedicated worker through his retirement. We wish him
a happy, peaceful retired life to be led with piety.

Mr. S. Antony Irudayaraj, Office Superintendent
Mr. S. Antony Irudayaraj, Office Superintendent
calls it a day after rendering impeccable service in the
college office for more than three decades. He did his
graduat ion in Madu rai Kamaraj Univers i ty and
subsequently qualified himself as a Post Graduate in
History through Annamalai University. He was appointed
as a Junior Assistant in the College Office in 1977,
promoted as Assistant in 1986 and the crowning glory in
his career came in 2005 wit h his e levat ion as
Superintendent of the College Office.
Mr. S. Antony Irudayaraj known for his simple and
unassuming nature was easily accessible to all, namely
the staff, both teaching and Non-teaching and the
students. Gifted with an infectious smile, pleasing
manners and total commitment to the job entrusted to
him, he endeared himself to generations of students and
won the hearts of the staff as well. Innumerable are the
students who were provided with monetary and other
assistance by him in times of their need and several such
beneficiaries are very well placed in professions and in
life. After having served under seven Principals with

single minded devotion, Mr. S. Antony Irudayaraj bids
farewell to St. Joseph's College to move to a well

Mr. R. Vadamalai, Supportive Staff
Mr. R. Vadamalai is a man who is synonymous with
several sterling qualit ies like humility, respect and
concern for others, duty consciousness, dedication and
genuine devotion to work. He was appointed in 1997 in
the Department of Botany. From the day of h is
appointment till the date of his retirement, he always
vo lunt eered himsel f to readi ly carry o ut a l l t he
assignments given to him by the Department and the
College. He is an expert in traditional healthcare and is
much sought after for his extensive knowledge on herbal
remedies, which he rendered without any monetary
returns. He is a God-fearing man with a traditional
outlook in life. His greatest concern was to lead a
disciplined life and keep the department spick and span
at all times. He nurtured a student - friendly approach
and was always ready to extend a helping hand to those
in need. Irrespective of the call to duty by the teaching
and non-teaching faculty whenever a need arose, the
first choice that arose in the minds of those assigned with
the task was to call Mr. Vadamalai, which speaks volumes
of his great qualities. His retirement is certainly a loss
to the department, but we wish him long, peaceful,
healthy and contended retired life.
