You do know what DVB-H is all about, right ?
• DVB-H is able to deliver data rates of up to 10 Mbit/sto a battery powered terminal
• DVB-H is highly compatible with DVB-T• DVB-H therefore acts as a wide band point-to-
multipoint data downstream• In many cases the DVB-H terminal has access to a
mobile communications network (GSM, GPRS, UMTS)• DVB-H comes in versions for 5 MHz, 6 MHz, 7 MHz
and 8 MHz channels• Time slices are the tool which helps to reduce power
consumption in the terminal• A separate level of FEC enhances the robustness (in
comparison to DVB-T)
DVB-H in the worldSince about two years DVB-H has been tested in some 30 trial networksall around the world

You did think that finding spectrum for DVB-H is difficult, right?
In Germany we did look for spectrum and we found spectrum
On 03 February 2006 the first DVB-H call for tenders closed (for Hamburg)
The following companiesapplied as DVB-H platformoperators
The following companies wish to offer their content via DVB-H
• E-Plus Mobilfunk• MFD Mobiles Fernsehen
Deutschland• NEVA Media• O2 Germany• T-Mobile Deutschland• T-Systems Business
Services• Vodafone D2
• Norddeutscher Rundfunk• Premiere Fernsehen• ProSiebenSat.1 Group• Radio Business to
Consumer• Radio Hamburg• RTL Group• RTL Radio• Truck Radio• ZDF• And others
Not bad, right????

Now that you have DVB-H…
• … you can offer your customers a very powerful IP-(Internet-Protocol-) based downstream channel, but:
• A lot of questions remains unanswered. For example:– How will the customer detect the services on offer?– How will the customer navigate through the
services?– Which protocols will be used on top of IP?– Which kind of audio coding is used?– Which kind of video coding is used?– How can you manage access to the services?– Will handover and roaming be possible?
• This is where IP Datacast comes into play
The set of IP Datacast (Phase 1) specifications consists of the following documents:
• Set of Specifications for Phase 1• Use Cases and Services • Architecture• PSI/SI• Content Delivery Protocols (CDP)• Electronic Service Guide (ESG)• Service Purchase and Protection” (SPP)
And in addition, audio and video coding formats aredescribed in the DVB guidelines document TS 102 005

A few words about the SPP specification
• It will never win a beauty contest since it is a result of a lot of very difficult negotiations which did notlead to one solution
• The specification includes as mandatory in the main body of the text the three transport encryption components ISMACryp, IPsec and SRTP. All IP Datacast terminals will have to implement all three.
• Two annexes describe the “Open Security Framework” and the “18Crypt Profile”, respectively. Both annexes are optional.
• It will be very interesting to see which markets will adopt which of the two solutions
Plans for the future of DVB-H
• All major DVB deliverables are intended to live for several years
• But eventually they will need successor systems• The typical example is DVB-S => DVB-S2• We just started a study mission on a possible DVB-T2
system• A study mission on a possible DVB-H2 system is due
to be started in 2007• A specification may then be finalized in 2008• And is it unthinkable that DVB-H2 and DVB-T2 will be
interrelated systems?
This will be the next steps in the development of the IP Datacast system
• Specifications Maintenance• Implementation guidelines for
– Electronic Service Guide (ESG)– Content Delivery Protocols– Mobility and Roaming
• New features– Mobility and Roaming– Notification/Triggers– ESG over the bidirectional link
• Harmonization with OMA BCAST• ….…and after 2006 we will look into IP Datacast
Phase 2.0
