Putzmeister engineering for clean power stations
Pressurized fluidized-bedincineration – the hallmark ofclean coal technology
This technology is distinguished byits low environmental impact and a higher degree of efficiency thanconventional coal-burningprocesses.
Putzmeister is making a major contribution towards clean powerstations. PM solids pumps from theKOS series without valves feed fuelinto the fluidized bed in the form ofa coal-limestone-water mixture. Solids contents of over 85% arepumpable, depending on the granu-lar structure of the material. Thepumps offer reliable continuousoperation, give no trouble and re-quire no maintenance.
Example:
One example is the domestic heat-ing power station in Värtan, Stock-holm. The Putzmeister pumps installed here operate maintenance-free throughout the entire winterheating period, which in Sweden isas much as 6500 hours.
Putzmeister solids pumps meet the critical requirements of powerstation designers and operators
■ constant availability
■ long service life
■ low maintenance and operating costs
■ easy to service
In order to ensure that its systemscan be fully integrated into powerstations Putzmeister works closelywith the leading suppliers of powerstation equipment. These includeABB Carbon in Sweden, the USAand Japan, Deutsche Babcock andSteinmüller in Germany,
Foster & Wheeler in Finland andBabcock Hitachi in Japan.
Further important areas of appli-cation for PM solids pumps in power stations are the pumping offly ash, bed ash and sulphurizationgypsum.
As a way of increasing the economicefficiency of the power stationPutzmeister can supply entiresystems for the parallel incinerationof sewage sludge and waste coal inthe coal-fired power station. Thisturnkey solution consists of silos, solids pumps, pipework and in-cludes all necessary accessoriesand services.

Pumping and transportation systems foreconomical, environmentally friendlydredging of lakes and rivers
Putzmeister offers new solutions tothe removal of sludge and its trans-portation.
Sludge is removed by means ofbucket-wheel excavators or directlyusing immersion-type PM solidspumps. These pumps can operateeven with extremely high solidscontents. There is no need fordilution with water.
Particular emphasis is placed hereon environmental friendliness andeconomic efficiency. Experiencedengineers come up with the rightsolution for the individual case, which is then implemented techno-logically. The rated performance ofthe PM solids pumps is of decisiveimportance here.
Top figures with solids pumps
■ Outputs up to 285 m3/h
■ Delivery pressures up to 130 bar
■ Conveying distances of more than 2000 m
Putzmeister solids pumps for eco-nomic solutions without damagingor contaminating roads.
Advantages of the process
■ In practice solids contents up to 68% and more have been pump-ed without water having to be added. This means no flushing or waste water.
■ This environmentally friendly, clean way of solving the trans- portation problem means less space is required for dumps.
■ Due to its gentle delivery and solid consistency the material dries out extremely rapidly and no dams are therefore required.

Mining technology – solids pumps workingunder the harshest conditions
Pumping slurry to the surface and backfilling
„Mine dewatering“
With mine dewatering, ‘slecks’ ormine slurries laden with sand mustbe conveyed up to the surface.
The Putzmeister HSP seat valvepump offers a particularly efficientand inexpensive solution to thisproblem. The following case studyconcerning a mine in Lorraine de-monstrates some of the economicand technical advantages of thisprocess.
The French mining companyHouillères de Bassin de Lorraine(HBL) was looking for a better wayof pumping its mine slurries with 720 g sand per litre up to the sur-face from a depth of 1250 m. The43 centrifugal pumps which theywere currently using were reachingtheir limits as the depth increased. Not only that but their linkage into acascade meant a fivefold dilution ofconcentration over the distance tothe surface. To solve this problemPutzmeister plant specialists de-cided to use two double-pistonpumps with seat valves (model HSP 3080). The use of the world’slargest pumps of this type in con-junction with a 320 kW hydraulicdrive brought the following results.
■ A greater capacity – 90 m3/h is pumped at a flow rate of 2.7 m/s at a pressure of 100 bar
■ The concentration of the solids remains constant
■ Energy requirements are reduced fourfold
■ The size of the 3 m stroke guarantees low wear and quiet running
■ The reliable technology in- creases availability and consi-derably reduces maintenance costs
„Back-filling“
High production costs, safety con-siderations, environmental aspectsand so on are forcing mine oper-ators to undertake extensive restruc-turing. An important rôle here isplayed by backfilling power stationand mine residues. The heart ofinstallations of this kind are S trans-fer tube pumps (KOS type) and ZXpipework systems from Putzmeister.Amongst the challenging technicalrequirements are:
■ Conveying distances of as muchas 11 km from the mixing facility on the surface to the backfill location underground and with no pumps installed on this route
■ Conveying capacities up to 100 m3/h
■ Operating pressures in the material up to 120 bar
■ Permitted pressure in the 200 mm internal diameter pipe- line of up to 250 bar due to the high static pressure componentsencountered
■ Suitability for abrasive material
Advantages of this process
■ Closed wash-dirt circuit: mine - treatment - mine
■ Improved stability for the coal workings
■ Better exploitation of the coal seams
■ Safe and clean transportation in the pipes
■ High working and operational safety
■ Low wearing costs
■ Lower specific energy consumption
■ Little water in circulation

can be replaced easily without theneed to remove the delivery lines. All of the familiar Putzmeister op-tions and variants are available withthe HSP series as well.
For further information please referto our IP 1971 GB brochure.
The HSP series is used with paste-like and highly viscous material witha low content of foreign bodies andsmall particle sizes (<15 mm).
Precise sealing of the valves meansthat extremely high pumping pressures can be achieved. Theprinciple behind the design of thehydraulic and pumping pistons isthe same as in the Putzmeister KOSand KOV series. This ensures themaximum reliability and availability.
Two special features of thePutzmeister design are that not onlyis it a simple matter to replace thevalves but the design means a longservice life for all wearing parts.Valves and valve seatings are madeof highly wear-resistant steels andcan be used at either end. Thisdoubles their service life. Valves
In the KOS series the intake anddelivery cylinders are connected byan S transfer tube. This means thatmaterial can be pumped straightthrough without interruptions ormechanical obstacles. No valves ofany kind are used. Foreign bodieswithin the material can therefore beconveyed without any problem upto a maximum particle size of 50%of the delivery material.
The KOS pump is particularly suit-able for conveying highly viscoussludges and other material with ahigh proportion of coarse solids. The KOS series finds its principleapplication with those materialswhich present the most extremerequirements, such as dewateredsludges which contain solids, oilsludges, high-viscosity solids andso on.
A wide range of application-specificcomponents and functions areavailable from Putzmeister.

The EKO series is designed for themost extreme pumping tasks. Theopen filling hoppers mean that ex-tremely dry material, which mayalso contain a high proportion offoreign bodies, can be fed to thepump. Materials which until nowcould not be pumped, such ashighly dewatered paper sludges, are thrust by the hydraulicallydriven piston into the delivery line.
The EKO Crown model is equippedwith a delivery piston with a harden-ed toothed cutting crown. This pumpis used in cases where the materialcontains large-sized foreign bodieswhich in other systems would swiftlyresult in the pumps blocking. TheEKO pumps and cuts at the sametime. Ladder systems / round silodischarge systems
Depending on your application, thesliding frame can take the form of aladder system (PDL) or a cylindricalsilo discharge system (PDF). Theladder system with multiple slidingframes in parallel is particularlysuitable for use with wide or longreceiving bunkers. This ensuresmaximum efficiency while systemavailability is also increased due tothe redundancy.
The delivery range includes silosand bunkers from 10 m3/h to 1000 m3/h for loading trucks and for feeding sludges to solids pumpsand their onward conveyance.
Material is discharged from the silosby means of specially adaptedconveyor augers, with a lateral orcentral discharge. If several endusers are to be kept supplied, noproblems are presented by usingmultiple discharge augers.

PM silo engineering with sliding frame technology
Putzmeister silos have been design-ed especially for highly dewateredand highly viscous sludges.
Pump and silo working in perfectharmony
Since both pump and silo comefrom the same manufacturer, thecustomer enjoys important benefits.
■ The shared silo discharge and pump feeding auger reduces costs and increases availability.
■ The perfect matching of pump and silo results in an optimized overall concept.
■ The fact that pump and silo share certain components means the need for fewer spares and also simplifies maintenance work.
■ The customer is not troubled with sub-system interfacing problems.
Sliding frame systems –tried and tested many times and reliable
The Putzmeister sliding framesystem has been designed espe-cially to meet the requirements ofharsh three-shift operation. ProvenPutzmeister hydraulic componentscombined with the use of modernfinite element analysis in the designof the sliding frame itself all increaseservice life. One major design fea-ture is the space-saving shape ofthe frame resulting from accom-modating the sliding frame pistonrod in the silo floor tunnel. The pistonseal used in the high-pressurepumps can be relied upon to preventany sludge escaping.
