What is hemoglobin?
• Hemoglobin is a protein foundin red blood cells
• They are responsible forcarrying oxygen from the lungsto the rest of the body
What is anemia?
• A reduction in the normal amount of hemoglobin and red bloodcells
• Makes the cells and tissues of the body receive less oxygen, thuspreventing their proper functioning
• Pale
• Tiredness
• Pain in the chest (thorax)
• Lack of appetite
• Shortness of breath
*In many cases there are no symptoms
Symptoms
– Blood loss (hemorrhage)
– Iron deficiency in the diet
– Vitamin deficiency
– Chronic Disease
*If you do not treat anemia in time, it can develop serious complications such as heart problems
Causes
• If you do not trat anemia in time, it can develop serious complications suchas heart problems:
- Hemoglobin levels
- The levels of hematocrit (red blood cells)
- Iron levels
Diagnosis
Hemoglobin levels
• Women- 12.5 a 15 mg/dL*
• Men- 14 a 16 mg/dL*
How is anemia treated?
Anemia treatment depend on the factors that cause them, among them are:
• Iron supplements
• Supplements of vitamin B12 and vitamin C
• Blood transfusions
Hematocrit levels
• Hematocrit indicates how many red blood cells are
• Normal hematocrit levels are:
Women- 38 a 47 percent*
Men- 42 a 50 percent*
Recommendations for anemia control
• Consume vitamin C and folic acid
• See your doctor for follow-up
• Visit a nutritionist to know how you plan your meals
How I can increase the iron in my diet?
Through the consumption of foods such as:
• Liver and other meats
• Dried fruits, such as raisins and prunes
• Walnuts
• Whole grains, such as peas and beans
• Green vegetables, such as broccoli and spinach
