Dear Friends,
Welcome to the Chamber’s 52nd Annual Awards Dinner Celebraon!
Our theme this year is “Let’s Go Green Together!”. Tonight we celebrate
our award nominees, volunteers, and members and the ways that we
are working together to benefit our community and environment.
We want you to know that you are very special to us here at the
Chamber, and on behalf of the Board of Directors and the staff,
Catherine and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to
our celebraon.
The awards dinner gives the Chamber the opportunity to honor our
volunteers, local individuals, businesses and organizaons for their
outstanding contribuons to our community.
This year, in recognion of the steps local businesses have taken to
iniate green pracces on our peninsula, we are adding a Green Award
to the line-up of Business Improvement, Community Service, and
Community Improvement Awards. The benefits that these green
businesses will have on our environment as well as our community are
truly to be commended!
The Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary
organizaon for the business community. It unites business,
professional individuals and firms, thus creang a central organizaon
which lends itself to improving business and building a beer
community.
It's our night to honor those who make our region so special and to say
"thank you" for all you do for the communies we serve.
Enjoy!

Business Improvement AwardBusiness Improvement AwardBusiness Improvement AwardBusiness Improvement Award
The Business Improvement Award is chosen by the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce (BBHRCC) from
nominations sent in by our members, staff and board of directors to honor our region's job creators. This award acknowledges the
challenges of setting up and maintaining a business in the region and recognizes the business' contributions in promoting the economic
growth, stability and improvement of the area in which the BBHRCC serves.
Our business is manufacturing PLA non-woven roll goods and end-products from a
common and established technology plaUorm; completely green, compostable,
bioresorbable and non-cytotoxic biopolymer products with niche chemical properes
for niche and scalable markets. We have experse in polymer material chemistry, non
-woven fiber manufacturing and anmicrobial formulaons; our backgrounds are
from the high-tech manufacturing, advanced materials, industrial applicaons and
health-care markets.
Some of our products have the following characteriscs:
Fully biodegradable and biocompostable packaging material for end-consumer
packaging applicaons.
We use silver and copper ion anmicrobial technology that is uniquely blended
and formulated with other chemistries for controlled release; it is integrated
to the PLA fibers for broad spectrum robust efficacy for hospital acquired
infecon (HAI) applicaons (wound care and healthcare).
We also integrate superabsorbent polymer to non-woven materials that allows
the material to adsorb 40-50× its own weight in water for advanced material/
product applicaons.
We release chlorine dioxide biocide gas via 2-part chemistry from the PLA sachet
to act as an anmicrobial blanket for specific applicaons in food and organic
fiber quality and safety.
Everything we do is fully compliant with the FDA and EPA (as applicable to the
products).
Having started in 1816 during the era of wooden ships,
Hodgdon is America’s oldest boat builder. Sll family
owned, today this East Boothbay, Maine company has
evolved into a leader in advanced composite construcon
while maintaining exceponal skills for world class
tradional and modern interiors. The company’s divisions
include HODGDON INTERIORS building high end superyacht interiors (up to 80M),
HODGDON YACHTS, specializing in custom sail and power yacht construcon (up to
60M), HODGDON DEFENSE COMPOSITES building specialized defense craX and
HODGDON CUSTOM TENDERS building some of the highest quality superyacht
tenders afloat and with the recent merger of Boothbay Region Boatyard, HODGDON
YACHT SERVICES.
Current projects include two tenders for two of the world’s most well known
shipyards, a 65X tradional sailboat, a 100X state of the art pre-preg carbon racing
sailboat, an interior refit project and a substanal refit on a large schooner.
With the consolidaon of the Boothbay Region Boatyard, Hodgdon employs over 110
employees spread out over locaons in East Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Richmond,
Damariscoa and Southport.
When you think of “The Best Pet Store in Maine” you
might think of a warehouse-sized, linoleum-floored,
fluorescent-lit behemoth with a moose or lobster on the
side of it. But for people who truly love their pets, it's
quality, rather than quanty, that counts.
Two Salty Dogs Pet OuAi)ers in Boothbay Harbor is for
people who truly love their pets.
Don and Liana Kingsbury stock their lile shop with pure dynamite-- high-quality dog
and cat foods, locally-made treats and toys, Maine-made collars and leashes. Large
bags of food are stored out back in in the shed, and are thrown into the back of idling
cars at the corner. People who visit come back again and again.
Don and Liana got the idea to open a shop when their Black Lab “Max” began talking
to them in barely audible tones, saying “...build me a shop and stock it with all kinds
of tasty things for me to eat...” That complete, Max's orders became more direct--
“Build me a Dog Army of friendly and hungry Labs that I might conquer the earth and
impose my will upon all living creatures...” So Don & Liana acquired Auggie and Coal--
Max's Black Lab Lieutenants along with a lot of military hardware specially-fit for
dogs. These days, the shop is ruthlessly and efficiently run by Max and his two hench-
dogs whilst Liana and Don dufully obey Max's every order for treats, however
ridiculous.
Fleet Davies: Exploring the ocean rocks in Maine during the
early 1950’s, I sll remember the youthful excitement of
finding sea urchins, crabs of various sizes, numerous shells
and occasional small fish in the seaweed shrouded dal
pools. Many decades later, I moved here with my dog Rosie
to enjoy and live in that same sense of wonder.
Good memories need to be the legacy of childhood and
new, wonderful opportunies, need to be available to all as
we grow older. Learning, supporng and passing that on
helps to make us all beer. I try to make that happen by
being involved in
• Boothbay Region Food Pantry – providing supplemental food to those that
• need a hand.
• Good Shepherd Food Bank Networking Conference presentaons - to keep us all
in touch.
• Boothbay Region Community Resource Group – promong a unified approach to
sharing services for those in need.
• Boothbay Community Garden – enabling others to have the opportunity to plant
crops, do the weeding, tending and then reaping the harvest. Then pass on the
knowledge.
• Boothbay “Back Pack” type program – helping to develop a weekend food source
for our hungriest children.
• Mid Coast Food Security Coalion - enabling pantries to learn and be beer for it.
• Boothbay’s “Set for Success Event” – what a novel program supplying school
children’s class materials for the new year as well as an educaonal opportunity for
our kids.
• Boothbay Region Land Trust – “Wayfarer” program providing real me educaon
for our visitors while walking the preserve trails.
• Church “Hospitality & Fellowship” food events for the community and visitors.
In 1954, the St. Andrews Auxiliary ThriB Shop began as a
fund raiser in support of St. Andrews Hospital. Today, we
are a vibrant “department” store in the heart of Boothbay
Harbor, serving this community and beyond, six days a
week, all year-round.
The monies that are generated from the sale of donated
clothing and household goods help support healthcare on
our peninsula. Through the generosity of this community,
and by the reless efforts of the over 60 volunteers who
run “The Shop”, nearly $1,500,000 has been raised and
given to many non-profit healthcare related organizaons. Each year, tens of
thousands of dollars are given in scholarships to students pursuing medical careers.
Similar giXs are also presented to Lincoln County Healthcare (the St. Andrews
Campus), the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, Life Flight, Home Health and
Hospice, the District Nurse, and St. Andrews Village.
Along with fundraising, the St. Andrews Auxiliary ThriX Shop spreads “good will”
throughout the community. We serve people from all walks of life, provide a friendly
haven for both customers and volunteers, and help many families in me of need.
As a part of a 501(c)3 corporaon, “The Shop” ensures that the St. Andrews Auxiliary
can accomplish its Mission, which is “…to assist through volunteering services and
direct cash donaon, the two campuses of St. Andrews, as well as other Boothbay
Region 501(c)3 Healthcare services in their collecve objecve to provide the highest
standards of medical care and treatment to the people of the Boothbay Region.”
Community Service AwardCommunity Service AwardCommunity Service AwardCommunity Service Award The Community Service Award is chosen by the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce (BBHRCC) from nominations sent in by our members, staff and board of directors and is awarded to an
individual, organization or group who selflessly and tirelessly volunteers his/her/their time and labor to help make a difference in
our community.
The Friends of Windjammer Days are a group of volunteers who have come
together to connue the tradion of Windjammer Days in Boothbay Harbor.
They have commied to maintaining the heritage of this marime event
to enhance the Boothbay Region community and the experience of
marime Maine.
Community Improvement Award: Community Improvement Award: Community Improvement Award: Community Improvement Award:
The Community Improvement Award is chosen by the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce (BBHRCC) from
nominations sent in by our members, staff and board of directors, and is awarded to an individual, organization or business entity which goes
above and beyond the expected performance of their duties to benefit the region's future. In addition to their routine duties and responsibilities, the Community Improvement Award recognizes an entity that often goes the extra mile to get involved in programs and
activities that benefit the communities in which they live and work. The nominee displays leadership, innovation, initiative, creativity,
and dedication.
In the fewer than seven years since Coastal Maine
Botanical Gardens opened to the public our growth as a
nonprofit commied to management excellence and long-
term financial sustainability, has been unprecedented
among the naon’s more than 200 botanical gardens. In
2013, we will welcomed close to 100,000 visitors from
across the US and around the world to experience 270 acres of exquisite gardens,
stunning stonework, exceponal natural landscapes, waterfalls and sculptures in
Maine’s only botanical garden. And, in addion to our role as an arts and culture
nonprofit enterprise, we will connue too, as a reliable economic generator in this
region by infusing the economy with $11.3 million annually in capital expenditures,
overnight visitor revenues and employment expenditures. We are honored and
grateful to have been voted the #1 Public Garden in the US by TripAdvisor (based on
visitor reviews). We serve our visitors; we serve the local & regional economy; but we
are commied to doing more each year while operang in a financially sustainable
manner.
The mission of the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library
states that it “provides mulple opportunies for people of
all ages to have access to wrien, visual, audio and
electronic resources in a welcoming, learning
environment,” which it has been doing at the same
locaon since 1924. Originally designed as a private home,
the Library Greek Revival temple-style structure was built
in the 1840's by William Maxwell Reed. Addions in 1966
and 1976 added much needed space. And this year we
have completed the first phase of our Library renovaon project.
We are excited about what this renovaon means for our service to the community.
With the increased importance of informaon access in our world, the Library’s
mission has become even more crical to help build and support a vibrant and
creave community. The Library is pledged to serve this need with increased
programming, with a special focus on our youth, and the creaon of a dedicated
“Tween Room” housing a book collecon and technology to respond to their needs.
Our second floor Community Room will be a venue for expanded programming for all,
with an enhanced emphasis on our senior member’s needs, such as increased
technology instrucon, genealogy research classes, and opportunies for clubs such
as kniRng and quilng groups.
The Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library is looking to the future as it moves into its
beaufully renovated space, a space that beer reflects its mission to serve the
growing informaon needs of the cizens of and visitors to our beauful peninsula.
My career path has taken many twists and turns over the
past 25 years that eventually led me to my true professional
passion. These experiences have enabled me to develop a
broad view of general business pracce, and recognize the
common denominators that I believe exist in every
successful business; trust, loyalty, collaboraon and
individuality, (with a good healthy dose of compassion,
generosity and humility).
It was with these life lessons and personal convicons that I created Markeng Cents
4u; a non- tradional markeng approach specifically designed for the small business
community. Small business is a sector of our economy that I believe is as crical as it
is vulnerable, and this model offers affordable soluons for growth; through
creavity, trust, loyalty and collaboraon.
I strongly believe that every business type has its own niche and ability to stand out in
a crowd and it is my goal to help clients develop a unique voice that will tell the world
their story.
Markeng Cents 4u Mission Statement: To keep the future success of small business
at the core of all we do; to provide an opportunity for businesses to become part of a
team that is centered on trust and loyalty; to provide resources, support and personal
aenon needed to surpass challenges that are unique to small businesses; to
provide a medium for small businesses to connect with one another; to do whatever
we do as creavely, effecvely and affordably as possible; to strengthen relaonships
within our community by working together; to pracce integrity and social
responsibility in all aspects of our business; to give back to our community.
The Flagship Inn and Suites was opened in June 1984, and
changed hands to the current ownership in July 1997. We
are locally owned and operated, which allows us to offer
the exceponal service of a small inn with the modern
amenies of a chain hotel. We offer 82 nicely furnished
rooms, as well as an outdoor heated pool, hot tub and
restaurant on site. With new Management in 2009, we have expanded our hotel
amenies to include Connental Breakfast, pet friendly rooms, recreaon room and
meeng space.
We were also cerfied with the State of Maine as an Environmental Leader. Some of
our pracces include: a newly installed solar panel to reduce the load on the electrical
grid; we have switched to a naturally generang salt water pool; in 2012 we built a
bridge connecng The Flagship Inn to the Penny Lake Land Trust, and maintained
natural marshland and indigenous plants which control run of; housekeeping has
established a sheet and towel program as well as using only environmentally friendly
cleaning products, and room amenies.; low energy A/C and heang units and
lighng, as well as low flow bathroom fixtures are used in all rooms. The Flagship Inn has adopted responsible pracces regarding the environmental
impacts of our hotel. We will connually review our ideas and plans for achieving our
goal to protect our local environment. We seek to reduce the impact we have on our
planet by efficiently using resources, saving energy, reducing waste and encouraging
recycling.
Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is a 60,000 SF,
LEED Planum science and educaon campus on the East
Boothbay waterfront. The campus consists of three
interconnected science and educaon buildings, along
with a shorefront facility and dock. The design was
undertaken to be compable with the site and to achieve
“greenness” to the greatest possible extent.
A key feature is the buildings’ unique daylighng design.
The solar orientaon of the three research wings,
combined with open courtyards between each wing, helps to maximize natural light in
the building, creang a comfortable and energy-efficient work environment. Year-
round energy recovery and other high-efficiency equipment provide a 54% energy
cost savings over a convenonal design. High-pressure, low-flow water fixtures
achieve a 45 percent reducon in water use, while 66 photovoltaic panels installed on
the roof provide 19.21 kW of carbon dioxide-free energy. LEED points were achieve in
other ways: using sustainable wood from sustainable forest pracces; buying regional
materials generated within a 500 mile radius of the campus, and purchasing
sustainably generated “green power.”
Bigelow Laboratory is the first scienfic research laboratory to achieve LEED Planum
status in Maine, and has won several awards in addion to the AIA Maine Merit
Award since its compleon. These include: 2014 Laboratory of the Year, Honorable
Menon, R&D Magazine; 2014 merit award for architectural excellence from AIA
Maine, Grand Honor Award Winner 2013, Build New England Awards Program, AGC of
Massachuses; and 2013 Sustainable Design Award and 2013 Design Excellence
Citaon from Boston Society of Architects.

GeLng Started
The Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce will distribute the
LAP Commiee Policy and Handbook adopted by the Board of Directors
in February 2014 and further instrucons. This will be a strong and
representave voice of the Chamber of Commerce for years to come
and provide new value to members. The success of this commiee
relies on your involvement. Be local, be vocal and get involved!
Sincerely,
James D. Chaousis II
President
The best Chambers of Commerce perform two integral missions for
their members: they assist with the sale of their respecve region,
connecng people to products, and they advocate for members and
represent the business perspecve for policy makers.
The Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce has the luxury of
assisng in selling a great region with outstanding products and services.
Now the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce has developed
a method to assist in advocacy and policy advisement for members.
I would like to introduce the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of
Commerce’s Legislave and Policy Commiee (LAP Commiee). The
LAP Commiee will be the advising commiee of the Chamber’s Board
of Directors. They will generate advocacy and policy posions for the
Chamber and help in priorizing issues. The LAP commiee will be
constructed of 30 members apporoned by the industry’s proporon of
membership. Therefore, the LAP Commiee will become a very strong
voice for the Chamber of Commerce.
The Vice President of the Chamber’s Board of Directors will serve as the
LAP Commiee Chairperson, allowing orderly progress through
meengs and direct liaison with the Board of Directors. The Vice
President will also vote on issues that require a ebreaker vote.
Members Role
Members will be introduced to this concept at the Annual Awards
Dinner. They will subsequently be asked to caucus amongst their
respecve service categories. The caucus only needs to be as
sophiscated as the service category required to determine their

Long ago I led an environmental group that stopped a major high-
way from being built. Every environmentalist supported us, but it
wasn’t enough. Then we included people who were appalled by
this wasted of taxpayers dollars, and we won. The highway was
never built because of alliance went on to save the local railroad
and establish a transit district, which provided beer, cheaper and
more sustainable transportaon alternaves.
My business is guided the above example. We have been using a mulpronged, in
depth, green approach since 1975. We believe we must use our client’s (& our world’s!)
resources wisely. Our long experience helps us avoid unintended errors. For example,
we install insulaon that doesn’t create moisture problems or indoor air polluon. To
back up what we promise, we guarantee our work permanently.
Our business is as careful about saving materials as we are about saving our client’s
money. When you visit our job sites you won’t see examples off waste such as an over-
flowing dumpster.
Restoring our exisng housing is the Greenest choice. It limits sprawl and preserves
livable communies. We avoid stressing Maine’s fiscal and natural resources by
adopng soluons that are as low impact as the problem before us will allow.
We insure there are very low economic barriers to an environmentally sensive ap-
proach by:
• Donang our experse to local charies;
• Teaching thousands of Maine Realtors about older homes;
• Giving free public lectures in every area town;
• Teaching low cost Adult ed courses since 1989;
• Providing free phone & email consultaons;
• Relying on our 100+ years combined experience;
• Creang a highly regarded energy savings chart;
• Being a federally cerfied lead abatement contractor;
• Training our employees as energy auditors & installers.
