1. President's ReportOur second year since chartering was a very challenging one, highlighting that the transition from “new” club to “established” club is still very much underway.
For most of the year we had multiple vacancies on the board, with no Club Service Director after the first few weeks of the new year – a position that was never filled - and two President Elects pulling out, resulting in no President Elect being trained at the President Elects Training Seminar.
Despite these difficulties, we had some remarkable achievements that the club can be very proud of:
• the Magnifying Microscope project has gained tremendous momentum, growing across the state and garnering enquiries from outside of Western Australia
• we chartered the very first community-based Interact club in Western Australia, a strong club with may fine young leaders in it
• we received a Presidential Citation with Distinction, signifying that we completed projects across the full spectrum of Avenues of Service
• we received the “Best Metropolitan Club Bulletin” award for the 2nd year in a row, recognising the hours of effort that goes into the bulletin every single week
• we received the Inaugural “Best Indigenous Service” award jointly with the Rotary Club of Geraldton Greenough for the Indigenous Group Study Exchange team from Wiluma to Fiji that finally happened after years of coordination.
I'd like to thank the club for their support over the past year, and wish Bryant Stokes all the best in his year ahead.

2. Club ServiceThe Club Service committee did not
function after the first couple of months of 2010-11, when the role of Club Service Director

was vacated and no replacement could be found.
Six members of our club participate in 4 Rotary Global Networking Groups:
• Environment Fellowship of Rotarians – Simone Carot Collins (webmaster), Di Collins
• Rotarians on the Internet – Marcos Carot Collins
• Rotarians on Social Networks Fellowship - Simone Carot Collins (charter Chair), Marcos Carot Collins, Claire Forsdyke, Daniel Forsdyke
• Disaster Relief Rotary Action Group – Ken Collins
2.1 Meetings
The meeting time and day remained constant throughout 2010-11.
The possibility of changing venues to a new community centre being built was explored, but until it is completed, cannot be considered further. One downside to remaining at Bethesda Hospital is the lack of suitable space for babysitting, which has resulted in the loss of some members.
2.1.1 Weekly Program
A range of high quality speakers on Rotary programs and projects, potential projects, general interest and ones pertaining to the Rotary Calendar (e.g. Rotaract for World Rotaract Week) have been organised since the inception of the club. Special thanks to Bill Hassell for organising the bulk of our speakers this year.
2.1.2 Special Dinner Meetings
Dinner meetings were arranged for special occasions:
• DG Ian Hutton’s Official Visit in October 2010. • Christmas / Second Birthday celebration at the Nedlands Golf Course on 16th
December 2010, with Max Kay as our guest speaker. • Changeover Dinner on 30th June 2011 – we hosted a joint meeting while the
team from Normandy gave their presentation. Pizzas and drinks were organised as a casual meal after the meeting.
2.1.3 Committee Meetings
Setting aside the 3rd meeting of the month for committee meetings did not work, with extremely low attendances rendering committees inoperable. Alternatives such as electronic meetings were tried, with equally little success.
A new approach to organising projects and reporting back to directors and the club as a whole, with a monthly club forum, was agreed on towards the end of the Rotary year but discarded before it was given time to see if it would work.
2.1.4 Board Meetings
Since, like committee meetings, a regular date for board meetings yielded a low turn out, alternative methods were tried such as an online chat and meeting via email, as well as

trying different days and times, straight after the regular club meeting and on the weekend.
2.1.5 Club Assemblies
Several Club Assemblies were held on a weekend to seek feedback across a wide range of topics. Assemblies were generally very well attended and were invaluable for seeking decisions and moving forward.
2.2 Social Events
A small number of social events were held, with those after club assemblies being the most well attended.
2.3 District Events and Appointments
A number of club members have served on District committees this year:
• Ken Collins served on the District Rotary Foundation committee as the Annual Giving Chairperson
• Bill Hassell chaired the Foundation Alumni of WA committee• Simone Carot Collins served on the District Membership committee• Di Collins was the Secretary of the Ambassadorial Scholarship Committee
Simone Carot Collins was appointed to the 2010-11 District Membership committee, which held its first meetings in the latter part of 2009-10.
At the international level, Ken Collins is the (Polio Plus) Gates Challenge Zone 8 Coordinator, and Simone Carot Collins was the Inaugural Chair of the Rotarians on Social Networks Fellowship, officially approved by Rotary International in June 2010. President Simone Carot Collins was the only member of the club to attend the 2011 Joint Districts 9455 and 9465 Conference, where we were again awarded the Best Metropolitan Club Bulletin.
Five members attended the District Assembly, and Simone attend the President Elects Training Seminar in the capacity of incoming Assistant District Governor.
2.4 Weekly Bulletin

Our award winning club newsletter “New Horizons” has been produced every week since our inception by bulletin editor Daniel Forsdyke with assistance from President Simone

and Secretary Di. It records our club history and educates and informs club members and friends of the club about club matters and Rotary beyond the club level.
As well as being emailed to our bulletin mailing list, each bulletin is published on SlideShare (www.slideshare.net/rcfwb) with a link to the latest edition being added to our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/freshwaterbayrotary).
2.5 Membership

2.6 Public Relations & Marketing
Club T-shirts and polar fleece jumpers were organised by Claire Forsdyke through Elizabeth Bain's business, EmbroidMe Claremont.

A club web site at www.rotaryfreshwaterbay.org.au was started but not completed with all the flux in the club. Our club Facebook page still serves as our primary online presence, with over 300 people following our news on Facebook. Our news on Facebook is pushed out to Twitter at www.twitter.com/RotaryFWB.
3.6.1 Newspaper and magazine articles
Three articles about our club have been published in local community newspapers (see Appendix II for the full articles):
• “Rotarians start in their teens”, The Post, 21st May 2011: The charter of the Interact Club of Freshwater Bay.
• “Learnng to be a leader”, The Post, 11th June 2011: Martha Forrest attending RYPEN at the end of June 2011.
• “Pink pinkies help fight polio”, The Post (Page 56), 25h June 2011: Paint Your Pinky day at North Cottesloe Primary School.
Three articles by club members were published in our regional Rotary magazine, Rotary Down Under
• “WA kids over the microscope”. December 2010 (Page 26): about the Magnifying Microscope project
• “Social networkers launched”, December 2010 (Page 34): about the official launch of the Rotarians on Social Networks Fellowship chaired by President Simone
• “Social networkers celebrate”, June 2011 (Page 7): about the role social networking plays with Rotary
Simone Carot Collins has continued to edit the quarterly “Rotaract in Action” section of the Rotary Down Under magazine, for which she was recognised with a Meritorious Service Award from the Rotary Down Under in December 2010.
2.7 Finance
Financial statements have been prepared every month for our Club Operating and Charity Accounts by Treasurer Toni James.
Adrian Rose has been appointed as our honorary auditor.
Formation of a Club Foundation to enable tax-deductability for local projects was finally completed, with Bill Hassell chairing the “Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay Charity Fund Incorporated”.
2.7.1 Fundraising activities
A Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings in August 2010 brought in $500 while raising our profile in the local community.

2.8 Club Equipment
A Volunteer Grant of $4,990 enabled us to purchase a number of items of equipment for administrative purposed, including a lap top, screen, sound system, digital camera and outdoor canopy.

3. Service Projects
3.1 Community
3.1.1 Knitted items
Knitted toys, jumpers and blankets donated to the club from Margaret Brawley and St Louis Estate were sent to Wiluna.
3.1.2 'Waist' Disposal Challenge
Simone Carot Collins was the primary Champion for the Waist Disposal Challenge, which concluded in February 2011. Our Club ended up 9th overall.
3.2 Vocational
3.2.1 Pride of Workmanship Award
On the occasion of the Official Visit by the District Governor in October 2010 (Vocational Service Month) a Vocational Excellence Award was presented to Ali Warne from La Galette de France on Broadway in Nedlands.
3.2.2 Vocational Visits
We made a Vocational Visit to Linneys in July 2010 to learn about the diamond and pearl industries.
Phil & Nancy Sherwood from the Rotary Club of Arden Arkade, USA together with Ken & Di Collins visited Manna Industries' “Kids in the Kitchen” on 12th October 2010.

4. New Generations
4.1 National Youth Science Forum
Ken & Di Collins and Simone & Marcos Carot Collins hosted four students who attended the first NYSF in Perth in January 2011.
4.2 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
We sponsored Calum Foulner to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp in January 2011.
4.3 Interact
The Interact Club of Freshwater Bay was chartered in April 2011 with 21 members from 5 local schools formally inducted on 14th April 2011. It is the first community based Interact Club in Western Australia.
The District provided $250 towards the cost of setting up the club (a cost of around $350 in total).
The initial board of the club comprises:

4.4 Magnifying Microscopes
Around 1700 microscopes were delivered by the end of June 2011.
4.5 Rotary Youth Driver Awareness
A fundraiser was held in January 2011 for the RYDA seminar to be held for Newman College in August 2011.

4.6 Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment
During the year 3 MLC students who had previously been sponsored by our club returned to tell of their experiences and to thank the club.
The Board agreed to fund 4 students – 2 Interactors plus 2 from MLC following a request from the school – however MLC subsequently received sponsor ship from the Rotary Club of Heirisson. In the end, although 2 students were sponsored, only Martha Forrest from St Hildas attended RYPEN in June 2011.
4.7 Four Way Test Speaking Competition
MLC, Scotch College, Christchurch Grammar and St Hildas are all being approached to see if they are interested in nominating students for the competition. If not, the Interactors have expressed interest in running their own competition.
4.8 Science Experience
We sponsored Conor Cleary from Christchurch Grammar School to attend the 2011 Science Experience.
4.9 Science and Engineering Challenge
Two members attended as observers at Curtin University on 27th February 2011.
4.10 Jade Lewis and Friends
The club contributed $800 to fund visits by Jade Lewis to MLC and Claremont Primary School to talk about the danger of drugs.

5. Rotary Foundation / International ProjectsOur club has continued to be extremely active in supporting international projects and programs and the Rotary Foundation over the past 12 months.
5.1 Involvement with The Rotary Foundation
5.1.1 Scholarships
• Ambassadorial Scholarship: Justin Hewett was successfully nominated.
5.1.2 Group Study Exchange (GSE)
• 2011 Exchange with Germany: We put an applicant and a team leader; neither were successful.
• Uni-focus GSE between Wiluna and Fiji (District 9920): The team from Wiluna left immediately after the District Conference. An article about it was published online at http://www.fijitimes.com/story.aspx?id=170073
5.1.3 Matching Grants
We completed 1 Matching Grant projects, a bus for One-to-One Dental Group in Cambodia. All funds on behalf of our club were contributed by Tony Munday.
5.1.4 PolioPlus
Paint Your Pinkies were held at Claremont and North Cottesloe Primary Schools. Raising $200 and $512 respectively.
Our Club contributed US$2,273,30 for the 2010-11 Rotary year.
5.1.5 Unrestricted Giving to the Rotary Foundation
A contribution of $4,851,58 was made in 2010-11.
5.2 Rotary Australia World Community Service Projects (RAWCS)
One new project was listed with RAWCS, and two existing projects continued to be supported, all of which have been personally visited by the Rotarians requesting the support.
1. RAWCS No WR514-2010: 20 cartons of text books were dispatched to the Rotary Club of Madurai, India.
2. RAWCS No WR516-2010: Angel Academy in Kathmandu, Nepal - over $20,000 was collected on their behalf, and Warren Milner donated a water filter to the school
3. RAWCS No WR007-2011: Sponsorship of the Koro School in Fiji's scholarship fund.

5.3 Other International Projects
• Three Shelter Boxes were purchased
• Knitted toys, jumpers and baby blankets donated to the club from Margaret Brawley and St Louis Estate were sent to Cambodia and Zambia. A laminated Certificate of Appreciation containing photographs of hildren holding the beautiful toys was received from Gary & Kim Hewett of Awareness Cambodia.
• 3 Scholarships for Milner Academy were donated to 3 French students.
• 1000 Tee shirts were sent to Cambodia

DG District GovernorThe Rotarian who provides guidance and leadership to all clubs in that district for one Rotary year.
DGSR District Governor's Special RepresentativeA Rotarian appointed by the District Governor to assist a new club in its formation.
GSE Group Study ExchangeA district-level vocational exchange program where a team of 4 young professionals aged 25 – 40 with a Rotarian team leader spend a month learning how their profession is carried out in another country as well as acting as cultural ambassadors.
