Annual Survey of Manufacturing and Logging
Industries (ASML)
Outline Purpose of ASML Coverage What do we publish? Estimation Some results
Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada 2
What is the ASML? Measures the contribution of manufacturing and logging industries
to economic activity in Canada
Manufacturing accounts for: • 10.2% of GDP in October 2016 monthly GDP by industry, and • 9.5% of total employment in 2015 (SEPH)
Key input to System of National Accounts Input-Output tables
Survey collects data on • what commodities are produced (Make matrix) • where commodities are destined (provincial I/O tables) • what commodities and primary inputs are used in production
(Use matrix)
3 Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada
Survey Coverage
Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing activities (classified to NAICS 31, 32 and 33) and logging activities (NAICS 1133)
Estimates produced for 185 NAICS5 level industries
Estimates produced for the 10 provinces (for the 185 industries) and 3 territories (for total manufacturing mostly).
4 Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada
Who are manufacturers?
Establishments primarily engaged in the physical or chemical transformation of materials and substances into new products. Includes:
• Assembly, • Blending of materials, • Finishing of manufactured products by
dyeing, heat treating, Plating, etc…
they can have other operations (e.g.
wholesale, repair work)
own materials or those owned by
others
finished goods or intermediate goods

6 Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada
What do we publish? We collect commodity information: Commodities consumed (inputs) Commodities produced (outputs)
Collect commodity values and some quantities
Those are classified using: North American Product Classification System
(NAPCS 2012)
1379 codes at the 7 digit detail level
Commodity Outputs are published at the all manufacturing level by province, regions and Canada.
7 Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada
Estimation of Financial Data
We survey a subsets of all manufacturing establishments (about 14,000). These establishments are stratified based on their revenues and the higher their revenue, the higher their probability of being selected.
Large enterprises are automatically selected and represent themselves.
Among the medium enterprises a sample is selected that will represent other enterprises. To do this, weights are applied to their data.
8 Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada
Estimation of Financial Data
To reduce response burden on companies, the establishments that are part of the lowest 10% of revenues are not surveyed. Their revenues are represented using tax data , while the other variables are modeled using ratios obtained from the survey portion.
9 Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada
Commodity Estimates
Commodity estimates are only produced for portion of the target population that is above the lowest 10%.
Estimation uses the same sampling weights as financial portion.

Source: special request to statcan.meddissemina:on-‐mwtd-‐mceddiffusion-‐[email protected] Notes: (1) Some classes that are more important than some of the ones in this table are not publishable to protect confiden:ality of respondents. (2) There is no rela:ons between NAPCS and NAICS codes. (3) Industry (NAICS) codes are assigned according to the main ac:vity of an establishment. An establishment could, however, produce commodi:es that fall in more than one NAICS code. This is why the summa:on of the values by NAPCS codes related to food does not add up to the value of the revenues from goods manufactured for the food industry.
