8/14/2019 Apollo Review - July 2008
1/2
On Saturday 3 May Lead-ing Cadet Murray repre-
sented the Unit and theentire Sea Cadet Corps
playing in the nationalmassed bands at Twick-
enham for the Army vs.
Navy rugby match.
Leading Cadet Murray
joined approximately
100 cadets from all
around the country inplaying a 30 minute
presentation to help thecrowd warm up their
voices before the start ofthe game, culminating in
the National Anthem.
Although she is also
skilled in the side drumand bugle through her
time in the band at theUnit, Leading Cadet
Murray played the saxo-
phone at this event.
In total the crowd for the
match was estimated tobe 50,500, making this
one of the largest events
that a Sea Cadet band
has ever played to.
All those present, includ-
ing the Unit Training Offi-
cer, Petty Officer ChloWhite thought the
bands performance was
exceptional and Leading
Cadet Murray, who par-ticularly enjoyed herself,
is already looking for-ward to future massed
band events where she
can represent the Corps.
Unfortunately, even with
the Sea Cadets spurringthem on, the Royal Navy
was unable to reverse its
eight year losing streak,
with the Army winning
this fixture 22-11.
Nevertheless it was a
fantastic event for rais-ing funds for and the
profile of the Sea Cadets
nationally.

Communications Class 3
During April and May theUnits staff was supple-
mented by Petty Officer
Chris Edge from Maiden-
head, who joined us to
teach CommunicationsClass 3 to all of the Sen-
ior Cadets.
Marlow Unit has not hada strong Communica-
tions presence for many
years but it is hoped thatthis course will encour-age some of the cadets
to take it further and
eventually instruct it to
their peers.
Over the course of five
parade nights, Petty Offi-cer Edge covered topics
including how to sendmessages over a radio
network, communicatingwith flags and safety
when using communica-
tions equipment.
After a short test, mainlydealing with the practical
skills involved in the
course, seven cadets
passed and wereawarded the specialisa-
tion.
Our thanks go to Petty
Officer Edge and his
Commanding Officer,Lieutenant Commander
Alan Fleming, who
helped organise this de-
tached loan duty.

On Sunday 21 June four cadetsand two adult volunteers from the
Unit helped out at the Marlow
Regatta at Dorney lake.
Able Cadet Smith, New Entry Rob-
erts-Moore, Junior Cadet Hall and
Junior Cadet Roberts worked ex-
ceptionally hard all day assistingwith the lane management and
timekeeping at the event whichsaw some of Britains elite rowers
(including the Great Britain
Womens team) racing.
Particular thanks go to the
younger cadets in attendance forwhom it was their first event out-
side the Unit.
All those present had a thoroughlyenjoyable day, which was helpedby fantastic weather. As a show of
appreciation for their hard work
the Marlow Regatta Committee
have kindly offered to make adonation of 250 towards the
operational costs of the Unit.

Join us!We are currently recruit-ing cadets, members of
staff and Unit Management Commit-
tee members at Marlow Unit.
Boys and girls aged between 10 and18 are welcome to join the Unit ascadets and will get an opportunity to
take part in the many activities we
have to offer.
If you are too old to join as a cadetbut still wish to get involved in these
activities you could consider volun-
teering as a member of the instruc-
tional staff. If you have specialist ex-pertise which you can pass on to the
cadets that is excellent but if you
dont then we can provide you withtraining to instruct a variety of sub-
jects. No previous experience is re-
quired to join our staff.
Finally our Unit Management Commit-
tee is looking for volunteers to helpwith the crucial fundraising required
to keep the Unit afloat. Any DIY skillswould also be much appreciated here
as there is always work to be done
around the building. If you are interested please contactthe Commanding Officer using the
details at the top left of this page.
From 12 to 18 April,Able Cadet Smith sailed
on board the Sea Cadet
Corps flagship, TS Royal-
ist.
Able Cadet Smith joined
the ship in London andsailed around the South
coast to Ramsgate. She
was also lucky enough to
be on board when theship travelled to both
Belgium and France!
TS Royalist is a twomasted, square-rigged
tion of her excellent ef-forts fundraising for the
Unit in 2006. Unfortu-
nately courses onboard
are so popular that shehad to wait until now in
order to get a place.Able Cadet Smith hopes
to go on board again
next year with the aim of
continuing to developher skills to the point
where she can takecharge of aspects of the
ships control as a Watch
Leader.
Other cadets interestedin sailing on T.S. Royalistshould speak to Able
Cadet Smith for moreinformation and then get
their requests in to theTraining Officer to book
their place!

Boatswains store renovations update
On Saturday 31 May the staff and Unit Management Committee spent the day clear-ing out the Units old garage to enable work to commence to transform it into a pur-
pose built boatswains store and marine workshop.
The garage, which had previously been used as a classroom, has remained largely
unused since the mid-1990s. However a large amount of effort has been put in bythe Unit Management Committee to secure the funds for this classroom and dona-
tions from the Marlow Society and Trinity House mean that we hope to have the
work, which includes complete electrical rewiring, repainting the entire room and
the installation of desks and storage, completed by the end of the summer.
