• DETC roster submitted to AIAA January 31st
• Official nomination period August 1st to November 1st
• Members can be added at any time
10
Participation Model
• The participation model was accepted for implementation in 2009 If a member does not meet the requirements in a
calendar year, he/she will be on probation the following year and must meet requirements that year or may be dismissed from the TC
Since new members are not officially members of the TC until May 1, the participation requirements do not apply until the beginning of the following year
11
Baseline Participation Model
1. DETC Members must accrue a minimum of (10) points per calendar year to remain a member in good standing.
2. Attendance at one DETC meeting per year is mandatory; (two) strongly encouraged.3. Point value for DETC participation:
Attendance at a DETC meeting: 4 pointsConference Meeting Remote Participation: 1 point for each occurrence, maximum of (2) to be credited Subcommittee Telecons, Working Activities 1 point for each occurrence, maximum of (3) to be credited Paper Review, Paper Session Chair, Paper Judge, Session Presence 1 point for each occurrence, maximum of (3)
to be credited.TC Leadership via S/C Chair, Liaison, Awards or Membership : 1 point for each occurrence, maximum of (3) to be
credited: Publications via AIAA and TC Paper Sessions: 1 point for each occurrence, maximum of (3) to be credited
4. A member in good standing may carry over up to 50% of excess points with a maximum of 5 points from prior year's activities. Additional points may be carried over with the approval of the committee.
5. Any member not meeting the (10) point requirement will be placed in a probationary status for one year.6. Any member not meeting the (10) point requirement for two consecutive years may be removed from
the committee.7. DETC members from academia & international may remain in good standing with accrual of (6) points
per calendar year.

Treasurer’s ReportBob Dauwalter
• Account total: $ 9409.86
14
TAC Funds
• Requested expenses reimbursement Russ Althof- $448.44 for purchase of 11 books for awards to
DBF ten top finishers. Bob Dauwalter- $225.74 for 5 books for SDM best paper

Request to TAC for $3,000 on hold pending review of cost estimates
15
16
Options for Funds Utilization
• Looking for ideas on funds utilization to enhance current membership, solicit new members and promote the DETC
• Suggestions from previous meetings: Grants for underprivileged students Subcontract labor for updating the Design Guide Grants to entice folks to update/write new material for the Design Guide Web support to capture historical data on the website Solicit student DBF papers and use funds to help pay for their trip to the conference to present DBF Materials – good for now Grants to students/colleges for project materials and equipment Create an inventory of common equipment and materials to give out to students for projects PC or laptop pre-loaded with design SW for a student project Inventory of K-12 education kits (as part of individual member’s outreach efforts), including model airplane
and model rocket kits Hospitality DETC reception to solicit new members
17
TAC Funds
• TAC has a yearly budget for TC funds Averages about $500 per TC Significant amount is not used each year and returned to AIAA
• Funded in 2012: Design Guides for DBF (approved) DBF Best Report Award (approved)
• Funded in 2013: 15 design guides DBF best paper award and Plaque
18

Student Awards Process for SDM
•First round of the contest will be based on the manuscripts. All the student paper manuscripts will be evaluated using predetermined criteria to be provided by Student Paper Chair to a panel of judges representing all the TCs and co-located conferences.
•All of the student papers are reviewed by the reviewers identified by the various committees. Each committee is responsible for conducting the reviews and providing the reviews to the Student Paper Chair. Each paper should be reviewed by three reviewers.

DETC Newsletter
• Fall and Spring publications Fall (inputs due at third meeting)
– After 3rd meeting in time for ASM distribution– End of year “hi-lites”
Spring (inputs due by Apr 1)– Prior to SDM– Emphasize paper sessions, DBF contest and for this
year’s spring edition, the Design Award winner
• Need inputs from S/C’s, SDM, DBF, Membership, etc
31
DETC Manual
• No manual updates
32
DETC Presentation
• A presentation, no more than 30 minutes, on the DETC and its activities Present to student chapters, local sections, etc for
recruiting purposes Send to prospective new members to help decide on
membership General info for other TCs or AIAA internal orgs
Will use completed TC manual to mine info and add material as required

Awards
• Design Engineering Award Nominations Next award will be awarded in 2014
– Beginning at ASM in 2013, we must put out a very strong effort to solicit quality nominations for the next award
– Nominations will now be due June 1, 2013 since SDM will be co-located with ASM in January 2014
We have a goal to get 6 quality nominations for the next award
Additional comments:– The award recipient cannot have been a member of the TC for at
least two years– We need to NOT rely on AIAA only to advertise and solicit
nominations for this award– Create and post flyers at all conferences possible starting in 2011– Send solicitation letter to engineering management of major
aerospace firms for nominations

New Event Model Discussion

New Event Model has been adopted
DETC yearly meetings
AIAA Science and Technology Forum- Winter
AIAA Aviation and Aeronautics Forum- Early Summer
SDM continues separate through 2013
DETC Paper Session Selection Criteria
37
A well written paper was submitted for SDM and rejected because it didn’t mention “aerospace” but was otherwise topically germane.
Should non aerospace papers be allowed if they are otherwise relevant to the call for papers?
Call for Vice Chair Candidate Nominations
38
Sid Rowe will be taking over as chair of DETC on May 1, 2013.We will need to elect a new vice-chair at the April SDM meeting.Candidates will serve a two year term as vice-chair and then a two year term as chair for a total 4 year commitment.
Discussion of DETC Goals and Strategy
39
DETC Goals: To promote superior design practices throughout our industry
DETC Strategy for achieving goals:1. Continue updating design guide2. Publish white papers on improved design methods, latest trends, etc.
