Election Support from Office of Public Policy and Social Concerns Lorena Melgarejo 415-724-4987 [email protected] sfarch.org cacatholic.org

This Jubilee Year of Mercy is an important election year, not only for the presidential race, but also because there will be a number of important state and local issues decided by voters on November 8. This presents a key opportunity for us to respectfully urge and encourage parishioners to prayerfully and conscientiously stay engaged, be informed, and vote according to their values. The California Catholic Conference of Bishops (CCC) is supporting Proposition 62 (which would end the use of the death penalty in California) and opposing Proposition 66 (which would expedite executions in California), as well as supporting Proposition 57, which is a restorative justice approach for juveniles: “In November - the concluding month of the Year of Mercy - Californians have the opportunity to embrace both justice and mercy (cf. Ps. 85.11) in their voting.”

Parishes and ministries are encouraged to teach and explore the principles detailed in Forming Conscience for Faithful Citizenship throughout the election season. Please visit the CCC website to learn more about important policy issues. Helpful bulletin inserts in English and Spanish are good examples of the many resources available on the CCC website. Find archdiocesan and USCCB guidelines for political activity here. Pastors are reminded that only materials from the USCCB, the CCC, and the Archdiocese are to be relied upon and distributed. The archdiocesan Office of Public Policy and Social Concerns is offering support to parishes interested in hosting events and activities related to Faithful Citizenship during this election season, such as non-partisan voter registration drives in parishes, non-partisan candidate forums, education events related to specific issues, or any other related events (within permissible guidelines). In the upcoming weeks, there will be volunteer teams visiting various parishes to register voters, and it is our sincere hope that more parishes will join this effort. For additional information or questions, please do not hesitate to contact Lorena Melgarejo, see above.

Election Season Prayer Intentions and Resources from the U.S. Bishops Fridays through November 11 usccb.org/pray

The U.S. bishops have invited the faithful to join a movement of prayer on time-sensitive matters of national concern, including the protection of life, marriage, and religious liberty in our country. Archbishop Cordileone has joined the other six chairmen of the USCCB Committees on Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty in issuing this call to prayer. Special prayer intentions for each Friday began on September 9, and will continue through November 11. For complete information, and a variety of resources, visit the Call to Prayer web page, above.

“Albert and Thomas” is the title of a presentation of Fr. Terry Ryan, CSP, on the great 13th-century Dominicans, Albert the Great and Thomas Aquinas. Through Albert, his mentor, Thomas became interested in philosophical writings recent and ancient. Albert spoke of the Darkness of Unknowing, where God is more than we can say about God. Meister Eckhart, also a Dominican, was a follower of Albert’s teachings. Thomas wrote a systematic theology of faith seeking understanding. He is the proponent of Scholasticism. The contemplative life needs an inner leisureliness to arrive at Truth through Love. The presentation is free, but donations are welcome. For more information, please contact Fr. Terry Ryan, see above.
