In an age where it’s seemingly possible to document almost anything, so many experiences we once took for granted are fast disappearing.
This year Art & About Sydney turns its gaze to the ‘endangered’: kids roaming our streets, privacy, letter writing, dropping in unannounced, shopping in person, local food and the backyard. When we think of what’s at risk, we immediately think of our natural environment – but these other small and frequently forgotten aspects of life are also at stake.
During Art & About, local and international artists bring their unique response to the threatened to our city streets and public spaces. Whether it’s the sad, the silly, the harmful, the hilarious, the obvious or the obscure, their works let us all immerse ourselves in what we are losing, and in doing so, bring hope to the endangered once more.
Enjoy the festival.
ENDANGERED
Creative Director —
GILL MINERVINI
Each spring Art & About Sydney celebrates our city’s creativity and imagination, with local and international artists bringing their ideas, wit and unique spirit to the spaces we all share.
This year we are focussing on the endangered – what we’ve lost or are in danger of losing. From the local milk bar, once seen in small towns and suburbs across Australia, to sending a postcard on holiday or simply being uncontactable; artists and performers have given us their own response to all that is disappearing from our lives. Their work is thought-provoking, surprising and sure to inspire and intrigue.
Our creative community, and shared celebrations of this creativity, are fundamental to the identity of our city. The City has long recognised the importance of fostering an environment where ideas and imagination can flourish through grants, public art programs and the encouragement of finegrain activity.
This year we released our Creative City policy, a comprehensive plan for how we can best use our resources to continue supporting our creative communities. This followed extensive consultation with residents, artists, performers and the many people engaged in creative and cultural pursuits. Their input and ideas were invaluable in formulating an action plan. This includes an expanded role for Art & About Sydney, with projects throughout the year, in addition to the annual celebration of art in our streets and public spaces.
I look forward to the continued flourishing of Sydney’s unique and vibrant creative spirit as we enjoy Art & About Sydney together, and as we implement our Creative City policy in the years to come.
Lord Mayor —
CLOVER MOORE

Slip on your thongs, give your best loud shirt and stubbies a quick press, and join us for a backyard barbie in Martin Place to celebrate the launch of Art & About Sydney!
We’ve mowed the lawn, set up the table tennis, decorated the hills hoist and put out the best garden furniture to recreate a suburban backyard slap bang in the middle of the city.
Your party hosts are Liesel Badorrek and Johnny Nasser from Loose Canon Arts, and they’ve turned on a spread. Australian chef and passionate sustainable food advocate Jared Ingersoll is on barbie duty and boutique winemakers Cake Wines are running the bar.
Enjoy live music from The Morrisons, Bustamento and Hot Potato Band playing everything from country to Latin and Dixie jazz. Double J have made us a special BBQ mix and there’s even a slide show. Settle in for the night, or kick on to the neighbours’ – with galleries and museums across the city taking part in the festivities and opening their doors ‘til late!
Our house is your house, so grab your mates and join us for a chilled night of songs, snags and shenanigans in homage to the disappearing great Aussie backyard.

Join the exhibition curators for a fascinating behind-the-scenes talk on this remarkable exhibition that tells the story of Sydney’s post-war owner builders, and explores a time when more than half of all Sydney’s new builds were DIY projects.

This lovely bar & dining establishment draws inspiration from its historic location – the site of first Government House; and serves modern Australian cuisine with a twist, combining the freshest produce with colonial era cookery techniques such as smoking, pickling and baking.

What PassionaTM, a mixed bag of lollies and a bottle of milk – remember when most suburban homes had a milk bar within walking distance? This much-loved local hub tells the story of an Australia built on immigration, small family businesses and neighbourhood communities. Art & About Sydney is bringing the milk bar back, with Eamon Donnelly’s photographic images of this faded icon flying through our city streets on banners during September and October.
Who Eamon Donnelly is an internationally acclaimed and award-winning artist and illustrator who has worked for some of the world’s most recognisable publications and brands. For over a decade Donnelly has been photographing the Australian milk bar, meticulously documenting this endangered part of Australian culture before it disappears from the suburban landscape. He is also the founder of The Island Continent, an online treasure trove of Australian art, design, nostalgia and popular culture.
If artist Eamon Donnelly had a pocket full of change, he’d take a trip back in time to the local milk bar and spend up big on cobbers, musk sticks and bananas...

What Stop. Take a deep breath. You are here and it’s now. Using striking colour and bold typography, Numskull’s large scale mural for Art & About Sydney is a call to stillness in a fast-paced world, challenging all of us to slow down and start appreciating the moment.
Watch Numskull paint the work in situ at 307 Pitt Street - don’t forget to look up.
Who Sydney born and bred Elliott Routledge’s (aka Numskull) early art practice focused on graffiti and street art. He now works in a variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture and illustration. He has exhibited widely in Australia and overseas.
“Modern society is fast paced. Time is precious and often neglected. We need to slow down, take it all in and start living in the moment. This mural will inspire onlookers to challenge their perspective about how precious life’s moments are.” - Elliott Routledge

“I wanted to create formal photographs of groups where their only relationship or connection is that they just happened to be in the same place at the same time.”- James Dive
Who James Dive of The Glue Society uses whimsy and a lightness of touch to create work that is both witty and thought provoking. Visitors to I Wish You Hadn’t Asked during Art & About Sydney 2012 donned yellow raincoats and stepped into a house that rained on a sodden furnished interior. Other work includes the iconic melted ice-cream van, Hot With A Chance Of A Late Storm.
What Brush your hair, straighten your tie and polish your shoes – Us is a temporary photo studio where you can be part of a group photograph with people you’ve never met before. What Squeezing brightly clothed people into nooks and crannies, artist Willi Dorner plays with our perceptions of space. What was once a gap between two buildings now houses toylike bodies, an alcove becomes home to coloured patterns and shapes, and a doorway is transformed in a game of sardines like no other.
Who Vienna-based Cie. Willi Dorner was founded by Willi Dorner in 1999. The company tours dance performances, and Dorner’s interdisciplinary works are developed in cooperation with artists and scientists of different fields. His work has been co-produced by festivals and venues across Europe and the United States.

What Part dance. Part spectacle. Part ballet. Five shopping trolleys appear in a public space. Two fall in love. One grapples to find a friend. And three ignite in a dance of anarchy over a breathtaking, high-octane, twenty-minute performance from the always-thrilling Shaun Parker & Company.
Who Shaun Parker & Company is a bold Australian dance company led by award winning Artistic Director/Choreographer Shaun Parker, whose works have toured Australia, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, United States, Singapore, Germany, New Zealand and France. Shaun Parker’s London Olympic commission Spill, a fast and furious playground performance, was a hit at last year’s Art & About Sydney.
Composer Nick Wales, a 2014 Helpmann Award nominee for Best Score, has collaborated on many Parker works including Shaun Parker & Company’s recent Sydney Festival hit AM I. Nick has worked with Sarah Blasko and is a co-composer with the critically acclaimed CODA.
Cast Toby Derrick, Lewis Rankin, Sophia Ndaba, Jordan Hanna and Sean Marcs.
Shaun Parker & Company are supported by the Australia Council for the Arts, Arts NSW and the Seymour Centre. Shaun Parker’s Trolleys was originally commissioned by the UK’s Without Walls Commission, British Council and performed by C-12 Dance Theatre for the 2012 London Cultural Olympiad.

What would the city be like without kids?
“Boring! There would be nobody playing and nothing to do. Kids have a right to be part of a community, they make things funner for adults.”- Sina, The Walking Neighbourhood Brisbane

Eamon Donnelly Artist, archivist and self-confessed milk bar junkie Eamon Donnelly would have had more toasted sandwiches and milkshakes than most.
For more than a decade, he’s been capturing Australia’s disappearing milk bars on camera – a project that’s taken him to over 200 milk bars, and resulted in thousands of images of fading signage, dusty shelves, paper straws and metal cups.
It’s a journey with its beginnings in Geelong in the eighties. As a young boy, Eamon would ride his bike down the back lane to a place known as ‘Dave’s’.
“I’d have a pocket full of copper – in those days you could buy 100 lollies for a dollar,” he said. “Everyone in the neighbourhood knew Dave’s.”
About a decade ago, he went back to Geelong to find that Dave’s had gone, as had so many of the milk bars of his hometown.
“There were just the old signs,” he said. “And I began to take pictures of them.”
As a graphic artist he loves the faded colours, the typography, and the hand painting on the older signage. And yet his love of the milk bar extends beyond the artist’s appreciation for a good hand-
The Australian milk bar may be disappearing from our streets, but Eamon Donnelly and Adam gerondis are doing their bit to keep this much-loved icon alive in our memories.
MEEt thE MILK BAR KIDS
painted Cornetto. Like so many Australians, he also has a deep nostalgia for the milk bars of our past.
“They hark back to a time when everyone knew their neighbours, when there was more community. Often they were run by migrant families. Their kids were there after school and would translate for the parents.”
Most recently, he’s come to Sydney to capture the last of our local milk bars as part of his project for this year’s Art & About Sydney.
He visited The Rio in Smith Street, Summer Hill, and The Olympia on Parramatta Road, Stanmore, both of which have had their doors open for more than 60 years.
And when a milk bar is still serving customers, Eamon always makes sure he goes in and orders a toasted sandwich and a milkshake.
His favourite flavour?
“Blue Heaven,” he says. “But no one has it here. I think it’s a Melbourne thing – it’s vanilla really, but there’s quite a bit of blue colouring involved.”
Adam Gerondis As the grandson of Australia’s first milk bar owner, Adam Gerondis is milk bar royalty.
In 1932, Adam’s grandfather, Joachim Tavlaridis (who later became known as Mick Adams) opened the Black & White 4d Milk Bar at number 24 Martin Place, Sydney.
A little like the 1930s American drugstore soda parlours, The Black & White may have been the first venue in the world to focus exclusively on the milkshake, which was drunk standing up at the counter. It was a roaring success, with Adams and his staff reputedly serving thousands of people a week.
Unfortunately the milk bar had closed by the time Adam was born – yet a love of the humble shake runs in his veins.
Growing up, the Bates Milk Bar on Campbell Parade at Bondi Beach was his local favourite.
“They even had one of my grandfather’s inventions there – the ‘Adam’s Correct Measure’,” he said. “It was used to measure out the correct amount of malt – and they used it right up until they closed in 2001. I now have it and I believe it’s the last one around anywhere.”
Adam runs Moo Gourmet Burgers, a place that he says tries to bring back a touch of the old days, with all food made fresh daily in the store.
“And great old fashioned milk shakes,” he said. “Served in the metal cups with a paper straw. No matter how many I make, I always think of my grandfather.”
THE AuSTrALIAN mILK bAr – PANEL DISCuSSION
Join Art & About Creative Director Gill Minervini as she leads a panel discussion on Australian milk bars.
The discussion will explore the history of the milk bar in Australia with the 2014 Banner Gallery artist Eamon Donnelly and City of Sydney historian Dr Lisa Murray.
Leonard Janiszewski and Effy Alexakis, who have been researching the history of Australia’s Greek cafés for over a quarter of a century will join the discussion and share their stories on the development of this iconic Aussie favourite.

PROUD PARTNER OF ART & ABOUT SYDNEY 14
STAR0777_Art_and_About_ad_FA.indd 1 11/08/2014 11:21 am
