Art Y5 – Week 3 :Roy Lichtenstein and Pop Art

• Read this information about the artist –Roy Lichtenstein

• There will be activities for you to do afterwards

Resources:

• If you have plain paper, use that but if you don’t that’s fine too. You could use the exercise book you have been given – the squares might even work as gridlines to help you!

• Use a pencil for sketching if you have one. Otherwise use a black pen or coloured pencil.

• If you can add colour to your sketches, then do but equally you can do it monochrome (black and white) and it will look cool!

Anything you see in a grey box, is written by me, your teacher, so please read it.

It will have instructions, thoughts, ideas, questions or tasks for you.

Lesson 1, step 1: read the information about the artist

This man is called Roy Lichtenstein. He was a modern artist who was part of the Pop Art movement.

Can you see the picture in the background? Doesn’t it look like a cartoon?

Roy Lichtenstein was born in 1923 in America.

He became famous for his colourful pop art paintings and comic book style.

Lesson 1, step 1: read the information about the artist

Could this be a mirror on a bathroom wall?

Or could it maybe be an aeroplane window?

Lesson 1, step 1: read the information about the artist

Well, what did you think it was? This is the same picture but enlarged. Can you see all the

dots that are in the picture? Roy has very cleverly used dots to create light and dark shadowy areas.

Pop Art is …art based on popular things of the time……such as everyday objects and adverts.

This picture is of an aerosol spray can. How ordinary is that? Maybe it’s hairspray or deodorant….it doesn’t matter.

Pop Art was like Pop Music – they were trying to make art be accessible to most of the population who were not rich people

and could not afford to own a masterpiece in their own home or visit a gallery.

Lesson 1, step 2: read this information explaining what Pop Art is and have a go at recreating one of his pieces.

This is some Comic Strip Art.

Lichtenstein made paintings inspired by comics but……unlike the paintings, they are enormous!

Task for exercise books:

Try to copy the outlines on this cartoon. Lightly draw the outlines first. Make your pencil lines clear and deliberate once

you are happy with them. Add some colour or leave them monochrome (pencil shading). Can you also copy the lettering?

Treat the lettering the same as the characters and look at the shape of the letters.

Lesson 1, step 3: read this information about some of his techniques that helped create his unique style and have a go!

These are called Ben Day Dots – I don’t know why!

Look at how the dots themselves can be big or small but always the same size – they have to be accurate and repeated.

Also, notice how they are either close together or spaced out. Can you see how this changes the darkness of the overall tone?

Do you think this technique is effective?

You could add some dots to your cartoon you drew.

Lesson 1, step 4: look at all these images of how he has influenced modern life and decide if you like it

So, what do you think of these things?

The car is pretty cool but I don’t know if I would drive it around!

Which is your favourite?
