Musings
Dear Friends,
I shared this in worship this past Sunday, but I want to make certain that as many of you as possible have a chance to see where we are as a local church in the issues surrounding the General Conference that was held the last week in February. I realize that there are dif-fering opinions related to the subject of human sexuality. Regardless of the position we have, we must never allow those differences to cause us to become disrespectful of persons with opposing positions. Christian love must prevail in all of the areas of our life especially when we find ourselves in an issue as controversial as this. So, with a few minor corrections, here is what I shared Sunday: “As most of you know there was a special called session of our denomination’s General Con-ference in St. Louis this past week----regarding issues surrounding human sexuality. The results of the general conference have caused a lot of anger, heartbreak, and frustration on both sides of the issue relating to acceptance of gay persons as pastors and whether there should be same sex marriages in the local church. There is much discussion going on and there will be much happening for some time. The decision was to not allow persons who are self-avowed practicing homosexuals to be pastors or that marriage of same sex persons would not be allowed in a local United Methodist Church. What is important for us to remember is that we will be the same local church we have always been. I am committed to serve in the UMC, which isn’t perfect but will remain my denomina-tion of choice. I want to say clearly that everyone is welcome at First UMC of Carbondale regardless of sexual orientation, regardless of color or nationality---regardless of income and regardless of whatever other human labels we choose to put on one another….The local church has and always will be the foundation of who we are as UM’s---how we serve Christ and love others in our community is what will really matter now and in the future…..We must continue to serve Christ and be the church regardless of our position and opinion on this and other issues. I ask that you lift up our denomination and our local church in prayer as we move forward through this difficult and challenging time in our history.” Our Bishop, Frank J. Beard, Jr., will be having a “Post-General Conference Briefing” at Harrisburg First United Methodist Church, Thursday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m. He will explain to us what the implications are for local churches and the general United Methodist Church. This presentation is open to anyone who wishes to attend. If you wish to attend, there is a request that you register online at our conference website: www.igrc.org. This request is to make certain that there is enough seating for everyone. I encourage you to attend. See You Sunday, Alan

News from the Green Team…
Recycling has many societal benefits. Among those benefits are reducing pollution,
maintaining and creating jobs in recycling, and supporting American manufacturing and
conserving resources. Paper products, glass bottles and window glass, aluminum, metals,
cardboard, junk mail, and electronics are a few of the materials that can be recycled.
