evelopments in surface preparationtechnologies continue unabated, orso it seems, as JPCL surveys a sam-ple of the latest offerings fromman-
ufacturers of industrial surface prepequipment. The following product pro-files are not comprehensive in scope, butdo represent many of the manufacturers’submissions to the Journal in the pastyear. The profiles below are intended todemonstrate that new technologies, aswell as advances in existing technologies, can serve many purposes—to meet newenvironmental and safety regulations, and to increase equipment functionality, efficiency, and user friendliness.
Blasting Units and ComponentsAxxiom Manufacturing Inc. (Fresno,TX) has introduced an abrasive controlvalve, the patent-pending MV2™, whichshows the operator the valve settings. The valve is the successor to theSchmidt® Microvalve. (Axxiom hasacquired the exclusive rights to manufac-ture all Schmidt® products.) The newmetering valve features a virtual positionindicator (VPI) that shows the position ofthe plunger relative to the abrasive ori-fice inside the valve. There are also gra-dation marks that count the number of
turns of theadjustment knob. The VPI gives theoperator moreprecision and con-sistency whenadjusting the abra-sive flow for dif-ferent applicationconditions, nozzle
sizes, blast pressures, and abrasive sizeand types, according to the company. The valve also utilizes the compressed
air before it is mixed with abrasive toloosen or aerate the abrasive particles sit-
ting above the valve, where they tend topack if stagnant for awhile. Loosening thepackedmedia produces amore consistentflow of abrasive. The valve’s internalcomponents are made from improvedabrasive-resistant materials. Because ofits reconfigured body and fewer wearingparts, the valve is easier to disassembleand rebuild than its predecessor. Formore information: www.axxiommfg. com.
Blastrac® (Oklahoma City, OK) hasintroduced the 1-9DEZ, a portable, light-weight shot blasting system used to pre-pare concrete surfaces before applicationof paint or coatings. Suitable for smallerjobs or tight areas, the 1-9DEZ runs on120-volt power to strip, clean, and profilein one step.According to the company, there is no
rinsing or drying time, and the profileprovides a bettersurface for coatingadhesion. With a 9-inch blast patternand amanual travelspeed, the blastercan prepare up to275 sq ft per hour, the company says. The blaster is
designed for appli-cations such as small industrial floorareas, tight areas around equipment andobstructions, and test patches. For moreinformation: 800-256-3440.
The Blastrac Highway and AirportDivision has introduced the 2-45DTMounted Blaster to meet the increaseddemand for higher production surfacepreparation equipment. With a 45 in.blast pattern, the 2-45DT shot blaster isdesigned for large projects. The highway-ready truck has all the
required equipment—dust collection, abrasive storage, hydraulic controls, andspare parts—contained inside the cus-
tomer truck body, thus eliminating theneed for additional support equipment.Once on site, the closed-circuit, dust-freeshot blasting process is attached to thefront and controlled by a single operatorfrom the cab of the specially modifiedtruck. The 2-45DT retextures asphalt, con-
crete roads, highways, and airport run-ways and taxiways. In addition, itremoves rubber. It can also be used forsurface preparation of bridge decks priorto the application of waterproofing mem-branes or polymer concrete toppings. For more information: 800-256-3440.
Kärcher Industrial Products (Camas,WA) has introduced a dry ice blaster thatit describes as a highly effective andmess-free tool for in-place cleaning. The new IB 15/80 Dry Ice Blaster uses
compressed air to propel dry ice pellets atsupersonic speeds; the pellets flash freezeand then remove paint, rust, and othercontaminants from a broad range of sur-faces. The pellets quickly dissipate into theair, leaving only the soiled contaminant, which is swept up or vacuumed and dis-posed of, the company says. The blaster is safe to use on a wide
range of surfaces, including all metals, thecompany says. The unit operates
on electricity anduses a blasting pres-sure of 44 to 230psi. Compressed airrequirements rangefrom 150 to 300

prepared by grit blasting, the companysays. According to the company, this com-bination of functions is designed to sim-plify surface preparation and reduceexpense through the elimination of gritblasting equipment and media and theassociated environmental and safetymea-
sures.Although the
rotary bristle toolis ideally suited forspot-repair appli-cations, it is alsorecommended forlarger surfaceareas where theuse of other metal
cleaning processes may be prohibitive. The company says recent tests done at
other organizations indicate that the toolrestores corroded and pitted steel sur-faces to a Near-White or White Metalappearance, and an anchor profile of 2.6
