General The construction of the CNC milling machine is quite simple, as it is based on a large number of prefabricated parts. However, fabrication of some of the parts requires the use of a lathe. The milling machine assembly must be performed in a defined order. Otherwise, it might happen that some of the assembled parts must be disassembled again, because certain screws are not accessible. When assembling the machine sub-components, be sure not to tighten the screws with their maximum torque. The Item-profiles tend to deform when screwed together with groove stone. When this happens, a further alignment becomes quite complicated, if not impossible. Therefore, the tightening of screws should be performed in several steps using a torque wrench. The accuracy of the milling machine depends largely upon the accuracy with which the rails and guide block are aligned against one another. A dial gauge is therefore definitely required. Dimensional Adjustments to the X-, Y- or Z-Axis By lengthening or shortening (in steps of 100 mm) of the various profiles and the corresponding spindles, practically any desired dimension is possible. for a changed X-axis:
- part 1 = 2 pieces shielding cuff - part 7/8 = groundplate aluminium / plywood - part 12 = 2 pieces Item-profils 80x40 - part 19 = 2 pieces ball srew spindle - part 36 = 2 pieces THK-rails - part 59 = 1 piece T-slot profile PT25/375 - number of screws and tenon blocks for the THK-rails
= 2 pieces each 60 mm for a changed Y-axis:
- part 7/8 = groundplate aluminium / plywood - part 13 = 2 pieces Item-profils 120x40 - part 14 = 2 pieces Item-profils 160x40 - part 20 = 1 piece ball srew spindle - part 37 = 2 pieces THK-rails - part 59 = 1 piece T-slot profile PT25/375 - part 69 = 1 pieces tooth belt
number of screws and tenon blocks for the THK-rails = 2 pieces each 60 mm
for a changed Z-axis:
- part 15 = 1 piece Item-profils160x40 - part 16/17 = 2 pieces Item-profils 160x40 - part 21 = 1 piece ball srew spindle - part 35 = 2 pieces THK-rails - number of screws and tenon blocks for the THK-rails
= 2 pieces each 60 mm
Baubeschreibung CNC-Rev2E.doc 19.11.02 4
When doing so, all relevant parts must be adjusted (lengthened/shortened) by the same amount as the corresponding axis. However, always keep in mind, what lengths are commercially available for the ball srew spindle. The travel distance of the Z-axis should not be selected too long, since the Z-axis might then start to vibrate during milling. Also, since the length of a milling cutter is limited, a oversized Z-axis does not make sense, as it might restrict the effectual part depth which can be machined. We recommend a maximum travel distance of 200 mm for the Z-axis, except when machining lightweight wood types or comparable materials. Subassembly Z-Axis The two THK-rails (35) are provisionally screwed to the Item-profile (15) of the Z-axis. The screws are tightened a little bit, but not with maximum torque. One of the rails should already be aligned in parallel to the Item-profile. After the guide block (65) have been lined up, the assembly plate of the Z-axis (28) is screwed to the guide blocks. The screws are again tightened a little bit, but not with maximum torque. The second rail is aligned in such a way, that the entire guide block system can easily move from one end to the other. After the assembly plate (28) has been disassembled, the relative height of both rails has to be measured and adjusted. This is done by attaching a support arm and dial gauge to one of the guide blocks. When moving this ram from one end to the other, the dial gauge will measure any differences in height of the corresponding ram on top of the second rail. Small deviations in height (2 – 3/100 mm) can be leveled out by selective tightening of the various screws. Larger deviations require the use of aluminum foil which is placed underneath the rail for leveling. The leveling procedure might require several passes, before it is successful. After leveling of the rails is complete, the remaining parts can be assembled. The screws/bolts for the bearing blocks (24, 26) are tightened a little bit, but not with maximum torque. Subassembly Y-Axis The two THK-rails (37) are aligned by means of assembly plate (28) (procedure as described for the subassembly Z-axis) and screwed to the profile (14). Only then is the assembly plate (28) screwed/bolted to the guide blocks of the Z-axis. The ball srew nut (18) of the Y-axis and the ball srew spindle is attached to the backside. Subassembly X-Base-Frame The various parts are arranged according to the drawing “Subassembly X-Base-Frame”. Subassembly XY-Portal The Y-profiles are screwed to both guide blocks on one side of the X-axis. When doing so, special care must be taken, in order to guarantee an exact perpendicular alignment.
