Other than macronutrients, micronutrients like vitamin A, vitamin C, folic acid & trace minerals like zinc & iron are important for women and child care.
Hexagon has been actively participating in many nutritional programmes of Department of Women and Child Development (DWCD), Integrated Child Development Schemes (ICDS), Education Department etc. by providing fortificant premixes for food fortification, VitaShakti for fortification of hot meals served at Aaganwadis and many more.
Meeting the daily nutritional requirements through
fortification
In India, these programs have been in place for many years with great success, however, in conformity with the topic of this Summit i.e.
“Women & Child Health: Product &Strategies with a Difference”
Presenting herewith case-study on a novel product ‘SPRINKLES’
Meeting the daily nutritional requirements through fortification
1,000 Days: Change a Life, Change the Future
The 1,000 days between a woman’s pregnancy and her child’s 2nd birthday offer a unique window of opportunity to shape healthier and more prosperous futures. The right nutrition during this 1,000 day window can have a profound impact on a child’s ability to grow, learn, and rise out of poverty. It can also shape a society’s long-term health, stability and prosperity.

Partnering to Reduce Child Undernutrition
“ Leaders from governments, international organizations, civil society and the private sector joined to help launch a movement to improve child nutrition through programs targeted at the 1,000-day window of opportunity (beginning with a woman’s pregnancy and continuing until a child is two years old). Evidence shows that a child who is well nourished for this critical period will have a healthier and more prosperous future.”
Countdown to 2015 tracks coverage levels for health interventions proven to reduce maternal, newborn and child mortality.
It calls on governments and development partners to be accountable, identifies knowledge gaps, and proposes new actions to reach Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5, to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health.
Hexagon Nutrition Initiative:
“ Hexagon Nutrition was invited by the U.S. Government to specially design ‘SPRINKLES’ for pregnant women & successful trial were conducted in Honduras, Central America.”
SPRINKLES FOR PREGNANT & LACTATING WOMEN
• Sprinkles is a combination of micronutrients in powder form for instant fortification of semi-solid/liquid foods to prevent and treat anemia and micronutrient deficiencies among pregnant women, who are most vulnerable and at risk
During the first 2 years of life, which are
characterized by rapid physical and social
growth and development, many changes
occur that affect feeding and nutrient
intake.
Malnutrition: 2 sides of the same coin
Child undernutrition is a leading cause of
child mortality and morbidity in low- and
middle-income countries.
Nutritional deficits and subsequent impairments in
child growth and development can affect
school readiness and performance,
employment potential later in life,
and thus the potential of individuals to break from the
cycle of poverty.
Child Undernutrition
Child Undernutrition
Child undernutrition
including stunting,
wasting and
micronutrient
deficiencies is a
leading cause of
child mortality
and morbidity in
low- and middle-
income countries.
The period between 6 and 24 months of age is
a critical stage during which nutritional
deficiencies can cause deleterious and
irreversible effects on a child’s growth and
cognitive development.
Micronutrient deficiencies, particularly iron
deficiency, have a direct impact on the
nutritional status of children and are the
leading cause of anaemia in non-malarial
regions.
Child Undernutrition
Nutrition Transition
Increased consumption of unhealthy, relatively large
amounts of energy dense but nutrient dilute foods
such as extruded snacks, polished rice, direct
carbohydrates etc. compounded with increased prevalence
of overweight in middle-to-low-income countries is
typically referred to as the “Nutrition Transition.”
“Nutrition transition is malnutrition ensuing not
merely from a need for food, but the need for
high-quality nourishment.”
Sprinkles
SprinklesHexagon Nutrition introduces Sprinkles an invention of
Dr. Stanley Zlotkin of SGHI Toronto, Canada.
Sprinkles is an innovation in home fortification to
improve the health and well-being of women and
children and a way to combat vitamin and mineral
deficiency.
Sprinkles is an action- and results-oriented
initiative committed to ending global vitamin and
mineral deficiencies among populations in need.
It is a unique delivery system to provide
micronutrients to vulnerable populations.

SprinklesSprinkles
Comes in sachet form with 1 gm of the mix, which is
consumed at once, thus neither chances of wastage of
the mix nor of any over dosage.
Sachets are easy to use and convenient. Light weight
and easy to store.
Best way for “Home Fortification” – no
measurement is required at home level. One does
not need to be literate for use of these sachets.
Sprinkles
• It is food based i.e. it
has to be sprinkled or
stirred in a semi solid
food.
• Thus consumers will not
have any pre-conceived
notion of the product to
be a medicine.
• Sprinkles is easy to store due to its light
weight. Large number can be stored in less
space.
• Easy to transports and distribute across long
distances.
• Have long shelf lives, thus minimizes loss of
product.
• Lipid encapsulation of the iron prevents its
interaction with food and masks its taste, thus
there are minimal changes to the taste, colour
or texture of the food to which Sprinkles is
added.
