The Way It Was...Twenty-Five Years Ago . . . 1943

From The Star, June 17, 1943Private enterprise has had hard

sledding, lately, competing with high wages paid for w ar work. Locally, preparations for the summer busy season have been pretty well hampered by the departure of nearly every boy old enough to get working papers either for the armed forces, o f for after-school work at nearby defense areas. . .

I hope that East Hampton tow nship isn't driven to importing farm labor as they are doing over in Southold. Eight hundred Jamaican Negroes, so the papers say, are com ing to help take care o f the crops on farms over that way. . .

A rm y, N avy and Marines: H O W 'S FOR A P IPE is the stock question that the natives o f the Southwest Pacific islands ask our soldiers, sailors, and marines and according to P fc Harold K ing they really mean it. In a letter o f May 23 Pvt. K ing wrote:

"L ife on this island is not bad at all. Our tents are screened in to

Fifty Years Ago .From The Star. June 21, 1918

The East Hampton High School closes today after nine months of steady hard work on the part of the faculty and pupils. W ar conditions have even had their effect on the school. Several organizations have been formed this year by members of the faculty to meet these conditions.

Some of these new organizations are the Junior Red Cross and U p lift System, and the Junior Red Cross Auxiliary, all o f which have proved very successful, both from a financial and moral point o f v iew . . .

Springs: Our truck gardeners have already begun to harvest some of their early vegetables. Peas, beets, onions, lettuce, radishes and spinach have been reported.

F ive o f the “younger generation” o f the village made a vis it to the strawberry patch of Thomas C. Top ping last Sunday afternoon, and besides stealing several quarts o f ber-

keep out those dive-bom bing mosquitoes. There is a fresh w ater river flow in g right next to our camp. This place consists o f jungles and coconut trees and I have had my f ill o f coconuts.

“ Natives are pretty p lentifu l and I w ill never forget the first ones I ever saw. They look at you and then start a little pow -w ow among themselves. They look rather queer but they are very nice to the soldiers.

“ E very time you happen to see one the first question they ask is ‘Have you a pipe?’ Just the other day one happened to come through the camp area and I happened to be in m y tent so he stopped in and the first thing he wanted to know was did I have a pipe. I told him I did.

He would like to have one, he said. ‘Can you sing,’ I asked him. He never said a word for a few seconds and then all o f a sudden he started to sing ‘Springtim e in the Rockies.’ His English was very good.

When he finished and I gave him the pipe he started to sing ‘F or H e’s A Jolly Good Fellow .' Was I surprised?”

1918ries, did a great deal o f damage to the plants.

Just as they had a nice quantity picked, however, they w ere taken by surprise by the arrival o f Mr. Topping, and they started on a run leaving practically all they had picked, and one of the boys even le ft his hat, which was fu ll o f berries. . .

A recovery o f $303.70 was made last month from the violators of the conservation laws. There were 22 cases reported, and the same number of convictions — One fo r taking trout in closed season, seven for taking fish illega lly, tw o fo r taking black bass in closed season, three fo r attempting to take w ild geese, one fo r hunting law violation, one fo r possessing deer in closed season, tw o fo r fishing on posted lands, four fo r angling, non resident w ithout license.

Don’t forget the graduation exercises at Clinton Hall tonight.

Seventy-Five Years Ago . . . 1893From The Star. June 23, 1893

It is reported that Robt. Collins has g iven up the idea o f carrying the mail on the Bridge Hampton route this summer.

New s from Amagansett: W hile w orking in the fields on Wednesday L . H. K ing found an old coin bearing the date of 1723. A few such finds m ight make Mr. K ing a rich man.

A fte r being imprisoned ten months, L izzie Borden is found innocent of the double murder w ith which she was charged.

I t is claimed that farm ing no longer pays in this section o f the country. Has the farm er ever attributed the cause o f the decline of his business to poor roads? Less money expended for horse feed and more money spent upon the im provement o f the highways o f the country

would have made fatter pocketbooks and healthier horses fo r the farmer.

The poles fo r the East End T e le phone Company have been delivered along the line between this place and Sag Harbor.

The wheelm en o f East Hampton and Am agansett met at the residence o f Geo. Hand in the latter place on Friday night last and organized under the name o f the Montauk W h eelmen. Ernest Muchmore was elected captain and vice president; Samuel Grimshaw, secretary and treasurer.

A committee was appointed to draw up a constitution and by-laws. The club w ill m eet in East Hampton tonight.

T w o excellent sermons were preached in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday by Mr. Joseph Robinson, nephew of Dr. Chas. Robinson, and a student o f the Theological Semin-
