The Legend of the Chinese New Year.1. Once upon a time there was a monster which ate animals and men. It was called
Nian.
2. When it attacked at night, everyone was terrified.

3. There was an old man who discovered that Nian was scared of fire, loud noises and colour red.
4. One day, Nian went to the village to get some men to eat, but, people were dressed in red, and started to make loud noises. The monster was so terrified that it ran away and never came back. From that day, people celebrate it wearing red, popping fireworks and making loud noises

MATERIAL AND TECHNIQUES. A4 paper, black felt tip, water colours, paintbrushes.
Draw and underline the picture with the feltip. Colour with watercolours.
FOR FAST FINISHERS. THE MONSTER WAS SCARED OF.

The Chinese New Year started many thousands of years ago. It is still celebrated today. It is a time for enjoying family and friends, for remembering ancestors, for feasting, and for giving gifts of "red envelopes" of lucky money. There are many ancient customs and stories that surround Chinese New Year.
