EXPLORATION EXPENDITURE REVIEWBasedondatareleasedbytheAustralianBureauofStatisticstotalmineralexplorationexpenditureforthe2011–12financialyearwas$3953million,anincreaseof34% comparedtothe2010–2011financialyear($2951million).Explorationexpenditureincreasesforindividualcommoditiesweregreatestindollartermsforironorewhichwasup73%to$1150.7million,followedbycoal(up61%to$834.3million),basemetals(includingcopper,lead,zinc,silver,nickelandcobalt;up19%to$795.5m),and gold(up 18%to$768million).Mineralsandsexplorationspendingjumped62% to$42.3 million.Althoughexplorationspendingonagroupofothercommoditiesthatincludestungsten,vanadium,rareearthelementsandmolybdenumwas5thoverallat$199million,thisincreasedjust1.5%.Spendingonuraniumexplorationwasdown28% to$153.7million,thelowestsince2006–07.
AllStatesandtheNorthernTerritoryrecordedincreasesinexplorationspendingin2011–12relativeto2010–11.OnceagainWesternAustraliareceivedthelargestexplorationspendingat$2106.8million(up33%).QueenslandincreaseditsshareofAustralianexplorationspendingto25%inthefinancialyear(up46%to$967.5million),andNewSouthWalesspendingjumped58%to$242.2million.SolidincreaseswerealsorecordedbySouthAustralia(up29%to$328.4million)andtheNorthernTerritory(up8%to$210.4million).SpendinginTasmaniaandVictoriashowedmodestincreasesof5%(to$39.3million)and2%(to$58.4million),respectively.
Substantialincreasesinexpenditurewasrecordedfor2011–12comparedtothepreviousfinancialyearatbothexistingdeposits(brownfields,up42%to$2710million)andatnewdeposits(greenfields,up20%to$1243million).Totalmetresdrilledalsoincreasedatbothbrownfields(up23%to7709kilometres)andgreenfieldsprojects(up 8%to3700kilometres).
