VFACTS AnalysisModel Sales 2011-2012
2
Topline Findings
• Mazda 3 continues to be Australia’s top selling vehicle. It outsold the Toyota Hilux by almost 3,500 units and the Corolla by more than 5,300 units in 2012.• Sales for all three models improved in the 2012 calendar year, relative
to 2011.
• Australia’s two most popular large passenger vehicles, the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon, both fell 2 places as a result of significant decreases in sales volumes. • The Commodore slipped to 4th with approximately 10,000 fewer sales in
2012, while the Falcon fell to 9th after approximately 6,000 fewer sales.
• Toyota clearly improved their position in the market, and solidified its position as the most popular automotive brand in Australia. The manufacturer now has 6 models in the top 20, all of which improved their rank in 2012 – they are the Yaris, Corolla, Camry, Hilux, LandCruiser and Prado.
• Other models which sold in significant volumes – the Holden Cruze, Hyundai i30 and Nissan Navara all maintained their positions in the top 20, placing 5th, 6th and 8th respectively.

Topline Findings
• The models that posted the largest positive movements in 2012 were the Toyota Prado and Ford Focus.• The Ford Focus moved up to 12th (from 21st), selling 18,586 units in
2012.• The Toyota Prado moved up to 18th (from 30th) selling 17,045 units in
2012.
• The only new model to enter the top 20 was Mazda’s new Compact SUV, the CX-5. Mazda sold 15,861 units over the course of 2012. • Subaru also successfully launched the XV with 9,908 sales.
• While sales of the VW Golf and the Mazda 2 were essentially consistent in 2011 and 2012, in a growing market, both models slipped a number of places. Both still place in the top 20 though.
• More significant drops were observed in Mitsubishi Lancer and Subaru Forester sales. Volumes were down year on year, pushing the models to 21st and 31st spot respectively.
• Other significant entries into the market in 2012 were the Hyundai Veloster, Jeep Compass, Toyota 86, Audi Q3, Ford Kuga, and the Nissan Almera. • Two models that ceased sales in the Australian market before 2012
were the Hyundai Getz and the Mercedes-Benz CLC Class.
