Good afternoon and welcome to The
Meadow for today’s league game against Cambridge City.
The match between these two sides finished 4-3 to the Ducks in December, so let’s hope for the same entertainment – and result – this afternoon.
As the previous result suggests, the two teams have been evenly matched this season. Both clubs are locked together in mid-table on 33 points each (albeit with the Ducks having played a game more than the Lilywhites).
City did lose on their last outing, 1-0 at home to AFC Dunstable. But the week prior they thrashed North Leigh 6-1. In fact, they’ve scored 13 goals
in the past four games, so the Ducks’ defence will need to be switched on from the opening whistle.
A quick note on the progress of the club’s charity partnership with Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity. This season the club has raised a tremendous £451.69, as a result of each of the directors contributing
a pound for each goal scored this season.
The charity’s next major event is an 80s family walk around Watermead Lake in Aylesbury on 6 April, with 2.5km and 5km routes to celebrate the Hospice’s 30th anniversary which takes place this year.
Up the Ducks!

About Aylesbury United
Aylesbury United was founded in
1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nick-named the Ducks, has experienced some incred-ible highs over its 112-year history but are now without a home ground to call their own.
United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where it remained until the Second World War.
Fame and the FA Cup
Aylesbury turned semi-professional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, hanging up his boots some 20-years later smashing club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals.
Promotion to the Southern Premier was
achieved and the Ducks moved to their new Buck-ingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and were promoted to the Vauxhall Conference. That year the Ducks became the only ever non-league side to take on the full England team, as more than 6,000 packed into Buckingham Road.
Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the first round proper every season. And in 1994-95 the club became famous for the ‘Duck Walk’ celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round, losing to Pre-mier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road.
Ups and downs
In 1998-99 the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United and the following season were fighting for survival on and off the pitch.
Despite defeating Foot-ball League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the sec-ond time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history.
But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997 having failed to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial sur-face. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but Aylesbury was left homeless after its lease expired.
Since then the Ducks have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches out of Aylesbury while the committee work hard to keep the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. In the interim, the teams plays home matches at neighbour Chesham United.

Today’s visitorsCambridge City was
formed in 1908 as Cambridge Town, the descendant of the earlier Cambridge St Mary’s club. A rivalry developed with Ipswich Town during the late 1920s and 1930s. Huge crowds attended these games at Milton Road, peaking at 11,916 in 1929.
City left the amateur game in 1958 and joined the Southern League, gaining a place in the Premier Division of. City won the title in 1962-63, edging out Cambridge United but the absence of automatic promotion to the Football League put a lid on City’s ambitions. City finished runners up in 1970-71, but the latter years of the decade were dreadful. Relegation in 1975/76 saw crowds dwindle and the Club fall into decline. After the redevelopment of the ground in the mid 80s, City improved and a new generation of fans mobbed their heroes after the 1985-86 Southern League Southern Division championship was won on the last day of the season.
City’s best season for 30 years saw them finish runners up in the inaugural Conference South season in 2004-05, going on to lose in the play-offs. The ground had been sold to pay off mounting debts and matters took a turn for the worse in 2006 when the then board announced an agreement to allow City to be absorbed into Cambridge United. With City on the brink of extinction, supporters were galvanised into a campaign which eventually forced the directors to resign and be replaced by members of the Cambridge City Supporters’ Trust.
City celebrated their centenary in 2008, but were demoted at the end the 2007-08 season due to over-zealously applied ground regulations, ending 22 consecutive seasons in the second tier of non-league football. With our lease on the stadium coming to an end, 27 April 2013 saw the last first team match at the ground before a large crowd with mixture of tears and smiles. Adrian
Cambridge had the honour of scoring the last ever goal at Milton Road in the 1-0 victory over Redditch United.
A new era for the club commenced in August 2013 starting with a ground-share at Histon FC. City once again reached the play-offs that season but once again tasted semi final defeat, this time at home to St Albans City.
The 2015-16 season saw City move to share at St Ives Town. Manager Gary Roberts left in the summer of 2016 after 13 years at the club, and former player Robbie Nightingale took over as manager in December 2016. However, the club was relegated to step four for the first time in its history. Hopes of bouncing straight back were dashed when City lost in the play-off to Hartley Wintney. After three seasons at St Ives, City are now back at Histon, while waiting for the new ground in Sawston to be built.
