ASEAN Youth Volunteer Programme
Database of Environment - Based NGO’s
around ASEAN
Background Context
The ASEAN Youth Volunteer Programme is a dedicated youth volunteerism
platform that mobilises ASEAN youth to develop innovative solutions to the
social, cultural, economic and environmental challenges of communities
across ASEAN, while forging a sense of regional identity. It is developed and
implemented by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), in partnership with the
Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports, the ASEAN Secretariat and United
States Agency for International Development (USAID).
AYVP works on 7 thematic areas, as guided by the ASEAN Socio-Cultural
Blueprint, among which is our common advocacy - Environment and Climate
Change. As AYVP develops into a regional reference centre for volunteerism
initiatives across the region, one of its initiatives with USAID is the development
of a database of NGOs around the region, which would help stakeholders in
engagement activities in the region.
This Database of Environment-Based NGO’s around ASEAN features 88 non-
governmental organisations (NGOs) that all advocate for the importance of
maintaining a sustainable environment and ecosystem for the community. It
contains a brief summary of their vision-mission, activities and contact details.

The Wildlife Conservation Society has the clear mission to save wildlife and wild
places across the globe. Through almost a decade of cooperation in
Cambodia, WCS has built close relationships with the three government
agencies responsible for forestry, fisheries, and the environment. The greatest
threats to conservation in Cambodia can only be addressed by decisive
action at the highest levels of government. WCS field activities in Cambodia
focus on law enforcement, community engagement, and long-term
monitoring and research. Government law enforcement patrols target major
crimes such as logging, large-scale land grabbing, and commercial hunting.
WCS provides funding, training, and technical advice on methods to monitor
crime and confiscate poaching equipment, and works with communities to
strengthen their role in land-use planning as a means to negotiate
management agreements with local indigenous communities.

The Wildlife Conservation Society- Indonesia implores a ‘muddy boots’ method
to conservation which starts with identifying critical conservation issues, then
finding science-based solutions to these problems, and then achieving
tangible, on-the-ground success that benefit wild life and wild places. WCS
began working in Indonesia in 1965 and established a formal country program
