Summer construction projects and updates

ongoing As summer break approaches its

halfway point, construction projects and summer updates are in full swing throughout the Bartlesville Public School District.

At Richard Kane Elementary School, progress on the early child-hood education center addition con-tinues to move forward. At a recent Bartlesville Board of Education meeting, Scott Ambler, of Ambler Architects, stated the work has moved inside the building and most exterior work is now complete. The addition is expected to be completed prior to the start of the 2013-2014 school year.

Construction on the secured en-

trance at Hoover Elementary School has started. As students and teach-ers return in August, visitors will be required to enter the building through the main office. Hoover is the final elementary school without a secured entrance. Completion of the project will signify an important achievement for BPSD as each elementary school will have a secured entrance.

Work on the new concession stand at Custer Stadium is ongoing. The project began approximately one month ago and is expected to be com-pleted before the start of Bruin football season.

BOE approves bond resolution: election set for

Sept. 10

With the Independence Day holiday set to unfold July 4, there will be no issue of The Bruin next week. But, look for it again - with plenty of Bruin news - on Friday, July 12.

Please enjoy your July 4th Holiday!

Where’s My Issue of The Bruin?

Construction is underway on the concession stand at Custer Stadium. The project is expected to be completed prior to the start of football season.

On Thursday morning, the Bartlesville Board of Education approved a resolution to hold a bond election on Tuesday, Sep-tember 10.

The resolution approved by the BOE was based on a proposal put forth by the Long Range Facilities Planning Committee (LRFPC) and focuses on the condition of Bartlesville Public School District middle school facilities and would result in the reduction of one secondary site, from four to three. The proposal is also focused on safety up-grades throughout BPSD.

The September 10 elec-tion will directly address school facilities at a total cost of $36.72 million.

The bond issue is tax neu-

Bartlesville Public School District Teacher of the Month: June

Jane Phillips

Jane Phillips fifth grade teacher, Therese Rawlinson (pictured center), the Bartlesville Public School District’s Teacher of the Month for June, is congratulated by Stephen Colaw (right), Arvest Bank Senior Vice President and Trust Officer, and David Oakley, Jr. (left), owner of Oakley Chevrolet-Buick.

Therese Rawlinson was named the Bartlesville Public School District Teacher of the Month for

June by Arvest Bank and Oakley Chevrolet-Buick.

Rawlinson is a fifth grade teacher at Jane Phillips Elementary

School. In recognition of her Teacher of the Month status, Rawlinson was presented with a plaque as well as a check for $300 by Stephen Colaw, Arvest Bank Senior Vice President and Trust Of-ficer, and David Oakley Jr., owner of Oakley Chevrolet-Buick.

In addition to her Teacher of the Month recognition, Rawlinson was also named the 2013 BPSD Teacher of the Year in February.

Rawlinson has been teaching for nine years and has spent the past two years in her current assignment at Jane Phillips.

Throughout her life, Rawlinson has always had a quest for knowledge across a variety of subject areas. It is this lifelong love for learning and desire to teach that led her into the teaching profession. This desire was enhanced as she became a mother to three children.

Rawlinson stated, “My love of learning combined with my maternal passion yielded an overpowering urge to teach, mentor and create a learning experience, but mostly I had the desire to plant the lifelong love of learning in a young child. It is here (Jane Phil-lips) - where I can still be a learner- as well as a facilitator of positive learning experiences.”

In her classroom, Rawlinson works to create an environment where students have fun yet learn the skills and information needed to further their schooling and lives.

“I strive to create a risk-free environment, a caring environment, a fun to be in school environment and a place of learning,” said Rawlin-son.

She also recognizes the importance of tailoring the learning experience to each student individu-

ally and discovering the best way her students learn. Not all students learn in the same way, and Mrs. Rawlinson believes recognizing that component is key to allowing students to succeed.

Rawlinson commented, “My goal is to help students understand themselves and how they learn. Students learn early in the year, using learning style surveys- how they learn, what their dominant

learning style is and how to identify individual strengths and needs.”

At Jane Phillips, Therese is active in a variety of activities that help better the school and improve student achievement. In the fall of 2012, she was a part of the Creative Leadership team that re-ceived a grant from Crayola for Jane Phillips. She also participated in the FISH Committee (Fun In School Happenings) during the 2012-2013 school year, which helps to motivate teachers and students through positive school events. Rawlinson partici-pates in Data Teams as well.

Therese Rawlinson is an exemplary teacher that works each and every day to improve the lives of students and the overall success of the district.

Special to The BruinThe Bartlesville Regional United Way is seek-

ing projects for Day of Caring. Projects are due by July 31.

Every year, BRUW coordinates Day of Caring, where volunteers from businesses around the com-munity help non-profits with tasks such as build-ing maintenance, yard work, sorting donations and more.

“Last year, over 1,300 community members volunteered 4,600 hours, and $40,000 in volunteer grants was given out by local businesses. Day of Caring made a lasting impact on the community,” Campaign Manager Jody Burch said.

Non-profits, schools and other organizations

with 501(c) 3 status are invited to submit projects for the 2013 Day of Caring. All projects must be submitted online through the BRUW website. For instructions, visit www.bartlesvilleuw.org and click on the Day of Caring box on the homepage.

All materials and funding for projects must be provided by the agency, but volunteer grants may be available through Phillips 66 and ConocoPhillips. A project is not guaranteed to be selected. The call for volunteers will go out in August, and team leads will begin selecting projects then. Day of Caring will be held on Sept. 25.

For more information, email [email protected] or visit www.bartlesvilleuw.org to submit a project.

Other projects of note include the re-surfacing of the parking lot at Bartlesville Mid-High School and Hoover as well as roof projects at Jane Phillips Elementary School, Ranch Heights Elementary School and the maintenance/transportation building. The projects are expected to be complete before the return of students and staff.

The district technology department is also hard at work refreshing computers and software throughout the dis-trict. Each summer, aging computers are phased out and refreshed with new equipment. BPSD utilizes computers for approximately seven years before replacement.

There are various other minor projects that will continue to take place throughout the district during the sum-mer months. A majority of construction projects and updates are being funded through the August 2012 bond issue. Bond funds allow the district to complete projects that would otherwise not be possible as part of the district’s annual operating budget.

BPSD substitute teaching opportunities available

The Bartlesville Public School District is currently accepting applica-tions for substitute teaching positions. To apply please visit www.bps-ok.org and click on the employment tab.

No prior teaching experience is necessary; however, to be eligible for the position, one must present an official high school diploma, GED documentation, college transcript or original unexpired Oklahoma teaching license.

Should your application be se-lected, you will be required to visit the Education Service Center at 1100 S. Jennings to fill out paperwork.

Substitutes must have finger-prints and a background check done upon selection. If you have been employed as a full-time teacher at any

Oklahoma school district in the last five years, and have had fingerprints and a national background check done, you may bring a copy of that check, along with a letter from the school district stating that you left in good standing. This will override any other background check you would need to do for the upcoming school year.

If you have completed the task to be a substitute in an Oklahoma school district in the two preceding school years, you may provide a copy of that fingerprint background check.

If you have worked for the Bartlesville Public School District for the past 10 years as a teacher immediately prior to the school year, you are not required to have a

background check.The pay for a non-certified

substitute is $50 per day and the pay for a certified substitute is $70 per day.

Certified teachers can sub an unlimited number of days dur-ing the school year. If you have a bachelor’s degree, but are not certified, you can sub a maximum of 100 days for a teacher. Those without a bachelor’s degree can substitute a maximum of 90 days for a teacher. There is no limit to how many days one can substitute for a teacher assistant.

Please contact Kadrian Hurd, Substitute Coordinator, at 918-336-8600 ext. 1006 should you have any questions.

tral and will result in no tax increase.

As part of the proposal, the current high school facility would be expanded to house all 9-12 students. The square footage of BHS would increase to allow for the larger student population in grades 9-12. A fresh-man academy would be built to house all freshman core classes. The freshman academy would not be a stand-alone building; it would be built onto the southeast portion of the existing high school building.

Middle school students who currently attend Mad-ison Middle School would be moved to the Bartlesville Mid-High School facility which would see upgrades and renovations. Central Middle School would see

major renovations and continue to house middle school students. The current Madison Middle School would eventually be demolished under the bond resolution.

Additionally, safety upgrades would take place at all BPSD facilities. The upgrades include restricted visitor access through school offices, visitor sign-in kiosks, interior classroom door locks, an increased number of video cameras and improved public address systems.

The proposal set for vote on September 10 would allow the district to bring its aging middle school facili-ties up to district standards and enhance the safety of students throughout the district. The bond proposal involves no tax increase.
