Baths of Diocletian

Where:
• The baths of Diocletian were (are) located on top of the Viminal hill in Rome. (The smallest of the seven hills.)

Who, When, and Why:• The building of the baths was initiated by Emperor Maximian in
298 AD in honor of his co-emperor Diocletian. • The baths were then completed in 306 AD by Constantius after
the previous emperors’ abdication.
• Built, like most baths, as a recreational hangout spot: for bathing, reading, working out, or simply talking with friends.
Importance:• Though there were
many (>900) bathhouses in Rome similar to the Diocletian baths, this complex was famous for being the grandest of them all.
• It spanned for 13 acres and could house over 3000 people at a time.
• Inside it there were gyms and even libraries.
