B a t t l e o f B e e r s h e b aThe Battle of Beersheba took place on October 31st, 1917.
B a t t l e o f B e e r s h e b aBeersheba was a highly fortified town
at the end of a long line of Turkish defence which started at Gaza, near
the Mediterranean Sea. Two previous British attacks had failed.
B a t t l e o f B e e r s h e b aBrigadier General William Grant led
the Australian 4th Light Horse Brigade to charge more than four
miles through the Turkish trenches with only bayonets as weapons.
The Battle of Beersheba included
mounted troops from Australia and New
Zealand.
B a t t l e o f B e e r s h e b aIt took less than an hour to over-run the trenches and enter Beersheba, securing
the water source and providing a strategic and significant victory for the
war effort by the Australian and New Zealand Light Horsemen.
1 0 0 t h A n n i v e r s a r y Hundreds of Australians, many relatives of those who
fought, went to Israel to mark the 100 year anniversary of the battle in October 2017.
