• 2. Relative location: the position of a place in relation to other places
Can you think of an example?
Review the difference between absolute and relative location
Mapping the Earth for absolute location. . .
• Globe: scale model of the earth
• Earth’s land surface: organized into 7 continents– What are the 7?
• Earth’s water surface: organized into 4 oceans– What are the 4?
• Where are they!?
Why do you think there are lines on globes and maps?
The grid
grid = lines of latitude & longitude
Which ones are latitude lines?
Which ones are longitude lines?
(draw your answers in the boxes)
• Latitude lines: drawn in an east-west direction and measure the distance north and south of the equator
(0-90°)
• Longitude lines: drawn in a north-south direction and measure the distance east and west of the prime meridian (0-180°)
• Equator: imaginary line that circles the globe ½ way between the North & South Pole (0°)
therefore, the equator divides the globe into 2: Northern & Southern hemisphere
• Prime meridian: imaginary line that runs through Greenwich, England from the North Pole to the South Pole (0°)
therefore, the prime meridian divides the globe into 2: Western and Eastern hemispheres
Which 2 hemispheres is the United States located in?
Let’s plan a trip using absolute location!
