Crimping
crimp tube
CRIMP TUBES are seamlessmetal tubes used to securethe end of a beading wire.To use, string a crimp tubeand the connection finding(i.e., the loop of the clasp).Pass back through the tube, leaving a short tail. Use theback notch of the crimpingpliers to press the length ofthe tube down between the
wires, enclosing them in sepa-rate chambers of the crescentshape. Rotate the tube 90°and use the front notch ofthe pliers to fold the twochambers onto themselves, forming a clean cylinder. Trimthe excess wire.CRIMP BEADS are serratedmetal beads. Twisted crimptubes and crimp beads can besecured by squeezing themflat with chain- or flat-nosepliers.CRIMP COVERS hide crimptubes and give a professionalfinish. To attach, gently hold acrimp coverin the frontnotch of thecrimpingpliers. Insertthe crimpedtube andgentlysqueeze the pliers, encasingthe tube inside the cover.CRIMP/CORD ENDS consist of a loop
attached to atube. Dab theleather, plastic, ribbon, or othercord with jewelryglue, then placeit in the crimp/cord end. If you’reusing a crimp end, crimp it asyou would a crimp tube.
surgeon’s knot
The SURGEON’S KNOT is asecure way to connect twothreads: Wrap the two endsaround each other twice, thenwrap one around the otheronce in the other direction andpull snug.
half-hitch
knot
The HALF-HITCH KNOT may beworked with two or morestrands—one strand is knottedover one or more otherstrands. The knot may beworked from right to left, leftto right, or in a combination ofthe two.
WireworkingMETAL WIRE comes in manyfinishes and gauges. The
lower the gauge number, thethicker the wire. The hardnessor softness of wire is called“temper.” Most wire comes indead-soft, half-hard, and hardtempers. Unless otherwisenoted, wire used in this issue
is half-hard —the best temperfor making strong loops andother shapes.
opening a jump ring
JUMP RINGS connect holesand loops. Open a jump ringby grasping each side of itsopening with a pair of pliers;don’t pull apart. Instead, twistin opposite directions so thatyou can open and closewithout distorting the shape.

head pins eye pins
HEAD PINS are straight wireswith a flat disc, ball, or othershape at one end. EYE PINSare straight wires that end ina loop.
simple loop
To form a SIMPLE LOOP, useflat-nose pliers to make a 90°bend at least 1/2" from the endof the wire. Use round-nosepliers to grasp the wire afterthe bend; roll the plierstoward the bend, but not pastit, to preserve the 90° bend.Use your thumb to continuethe wrap around the nose ofthe pliers. Trim the wire nextto the bend. Open a simpleloop just as you would a jumpring.
wrappedloop
To form a WRAPPED LOOP, begin with a 90° bend at least2" from the end of the wire.Use round-nose pliers to forma simple loop with a tail over-lapping the bend. Wrap thetail tightly down the neck of

Knotting
overhandknot
The OVERHAND KNOT is thebasic knot for tying off thread:Make a loop with the stringingmaterial. Pass the cord that liesbehind the loop over the frontcord then through the loopand pull snug.LARK’S HEAD KNOTS are greatfor securing stringing materialto anotherpiece, suchas a ring or adonut: Foldthe stringing

the wire to create a coupleof coils. Trim the excess wire
to finish. Make aDOUBLE-
WRAPPED LOOP by wrappingthe wire back up over the coils, toward the loop, and trimmingthe wire tail at the loop.
wrapped-loopdangle
DANGLES can be strung asthey are, attached using jumprings, or linked to other loops.Use a head pin or eye pin tostring the bead(s), then form asimple or wrapped loop.
wrapped-looplinks
LINK a wrapped loop toanother loop by passing thewire through the previousloop before wrapping the taildown the neck of the wire.
wrapped-
loop bail
WRAPPED-LOOP BAILSturnside-drilled beads, usually
teardrops, into pendants.Center the bead on a 3" orlonger piece of wire. Bendboth ends of the wire up thesides and across the top of thebead. Bend one end straightup at the center of the bead, then wrap the other wirearound it to form a couple of
chain-nose pliers and pushingthe wire over the previous
spiral with your fingers for asmany revolutions as desired.
hammering
To HAMMER, place your wireon a steel bench block or
anvil. Use the flat end of aball-peen or chasing hammerto flatten the wire, then usethe ball end of the hammer toadd texture.
Oxidizing Silverwith Liver of SulfurAlways wear vinyl or latexgloves, work in a well-ventilated area (liver of sulfurhas an unpleasant odor thatquickly dissipates), and care-fully read manufacturer’sdirections when using
chemicals.Wash all silver to be colored
with soap and water. Mix liverof sulfur nuggets in hot (notboiling) water according tomanufacturer’s directions ina disposable container. Mostsuggest mixing 1 pea-sizenugget for every 1 cup ofwater. A weaker solution willproduce a lighter pat ina withwarm hues; a stronger solu-tion will produce a darkerpatina.
coils. Form a wrapped loopwith the straight-up wire,
wrapping it back down overthe already-formed coils. Trimthe excess wire.
cone
Use CONES to finish a multi-strand piece. Attach each
strand of beads to a wrappedloop or an eye pin. Use thewrapped-loop wire or eye pinto string the wide end of acone, covering the ends of thestrands; form a wrapped loopat the tip of the cone thatattaches to a clasp.
coil
To make a COIL, use one handto hold the end of your wireagainst a mandrel (or what-ever object you want to coilaround). With the other hand, wrap the wire around themandrel. When finished, slidethe coil off the mandrel.
spiral
To start a SPIRAL (or scroll),make a small loop at the endof a wire with round-nosepliers. Enlarge the piece byholding onto the spiral with
For ease of dipping yoursilver into the solution, use 12"
of beading or sewing threadto string the bead(s), chain, orfinding(s) you wish to oxidize;tie the ends in an overhandknot. If coloring small itemsthat cannot be strung (such ascrimp covers), you will need todrop them in the solution andthen quickly scoop them outwith a plastic spoon.
Or, place small items on apaper towel and brush themwith the solution; this method, however, often results inuneven coloring.
Dip the silver in the solutionas many times as necessaryto achieve the desired patina. If the silver becomes darkerthan desired, it can always belightened later by buffing orpolishing.
Rinse off the silver in coldwater. To further stop oxi-dation, dip the silver in aweak solution (1:4) of bakingsoda and water. Remove anythreads you used to suspendthe metal. Allow the silver to
dry, then, if desired, use apolishing cloth or #0000 (extrafine) steel wool to buff andpolish it.
Store all used solution inthe disposable container. After about a week, it willdegrade enough to bewashed down a sink (prefer-ably a utility sink) with a lot ofwater. Contact your local haz-ardous waste facility for moreinformation on disposing ofthe liquid safely.
