Beyond the Self ie
Since 2002, The Print Center’s Artists-in-Schools Program (AISP) has provided critically important visual arts education, centered on contemporary photography and print, to underserved students in Philadelphia public high schools. The Print Center, founded in 1915, encourages the growth and understanding of photography and printmaking as vital contemporary arts through exhibitions, publications and educational programs. Education has been an important organizational focus from the outset, and it remains a core part of our work.
In the spring of 2016, AISP classes explored the diverse and creative approaches artists bring to the creation of photography books. Diverse in form, content and purpose, the resulting publications celebrate the creativity of the student artists as well as the vitality of the photography book as an artistic form.
Students from two classes at Northeast High School collaborated to create a book that explores the historic genre of self-portraiture in relation to the contemporary phenomenon of the cell phone selfie. Beyond the Selfie is an intimate sharing of this personal exploration of self for which students pushed beyond the typical margins and habits of cell phone culture. With this project, students transferred their photographs to ceramic tiles and also created low-relief tiles inspired by the thoughts and feelings that emerged from the process of self-discovery. The students invite you to see them in all their complexity and learn with them about who they are, who they love, what they dream and what they see when they look in the mirror and listen to their hearts.

If you’re mad taking a selfie, move your mouth. Cuz if you are, then try turning your day upside down with a crooked smile. I’m not trying to be important; I just go out and play my game with no regrets and ten toes down.

My #1 dream is a studio mic which is used for recording; it’s what I love and I just can’t give up on that one thing. Room of Opportunity is a studio set. Every time I walk into a studio set it just excites me to be in that environment and it gives me the opportunity to do what I really love: rapping.

Broken pieces, too late to be fixed. Wondering if time could go back, but it can’t, time is passing too fast. You want it to stop, but it’s useless. But happiness still lives in your memory. It will be there no matter what, even if it’s not beside you anymore.
