VII. Teaching (Matthew 28:20) – “…them to observe all that I have commanded you.” This is discipleship – being a learner / follower (Matt. 4:19)
Part of obedience is learning about baptism, repentance, and
obeying what you learn in Scripture (Acts 2:38 & Matt. 28:19)
Part of obedience is learning about the Church and being in Christian community, devoted and serving (Acts 2:42-47)
Part of obedience is learning how to make disciples and then going and putting into practice what you are learning (Matt. 28:19)
VIII. Jesus’ comforting promise (Matthew 28:20) – He will be with you…
How?
John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. … 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you... 23 … “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”
The whole Trinity will dwell in you to help you!
Reflection: What excuses tend to keep you from following Jesus’ command to make disciples? What do you need to do in order to move past these excuses? Whom has God placed in your life right now that you can begin making into a disciple of Jesus Christ? Whom has God placed in your life to partner with in making disciples?
Love Multiplied: more than a worship service… Sept 14, 2014
I. What is the Great Commission?
Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
We often view the Great Commission as something…
BI: The Great Commission is a lifestyle.
II. Context of the Great Commission (Matthew 28)
Matthew 28:1 …Mary Magdalen and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold…an angel…rolled back the stone and sat on it… 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen… Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him...”
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee... 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some [hesitated]. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
They lived the Great Commission lifestyle because they saw the resurrected Lord.
Everything in Christianity hinges on the Resurrection of Jesus.
III. “All authority has been given to me…” (Matt. 28:18)
Daniel 7:13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
IV. “Therefore go and make disciples…” (Matt. 28:19)
Which word is the command: Go or Make? [circle your answer]
“Make” = is an Imperative of Command [the main verb of the sentence]
Going, baptizing, and teaching = are participles [-ing] and they are subordinate verbs taking on the imperatival force of the main verb, which is “make.”
Why live this lifestyle?
V. Going (Matt. 28:19; see Deut, 6:4-9) – “…make disciples of all nations…”
Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
VI. Baptizing (Matt. 28:19) – “…them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…”
Baptism is the initiation into the Christian community…

curbing needed to be installed first. We will
