job on Channel 3 promoting our class

Vermilion newspapers on Jan 15th
Due to low enrollment the fall class had
to be cancelled.

D.C. where I had presented at a nursing
conference. I was feeling stressed over the
cancelled class, anxious about the
upcoming holidays and in general,
apprehensive about what this new year
would bring,
As you know I am an experienced
traveler so I didn’t even look at my
boarding pass until I entered the plane…
that is when I found out I was in the
bulkhead seat. I don’t like those seats for
one reason-nothing and I do mean
nothing-can be with you. As in work,
readings, PURSE etc. All must be stored
for take-off and landing. Of course
during the flight you can get them IF
you are tall enough, and not in the
window seat and would need to disrupt
TWO SLEEPING passengers between
you and the aisle.
Great! What else could make me more
frazzled?
That is when I stopped focusing on
me and listened for that small still
voice….
Wow Faith, you have two hours to
THINK, ACCEPT, FORGIVE and PRAY.
You can listen to what God is saying in
your heart. Within 5 minutes I realized
I was smiling…
I started with what frustrated me and
realized that all of it was “stuff” and I
was giving it way too much of my time.
I focused on all of you and what you
Finding bliss in the bulkhead
My fall was like everyone’s, full of
family, work and parish nurse
activities. I had the privilege of teaching
a 5 Wishes program for Linda Andris
(Winter 2007) at her Milford Christian
Church in Milford. The group was
delightful and willing to discuss what
is for many, a tough topic. Fall is my
favorite season followed by winter so it
is an uplifting time for me.
This year though I was dealing with
frustration over the cancellation of our
fall class due to low enrollment. One of
the applicants ended up attending an
online course and will be in our group
for CE, newsletter, retreat etc. I was
painfully aware that the others were
dismayed over the cancellation and are
counting on us having a winter class
for them. I attended the Magnet
conference in October only to have it
cancelled within 24 hours due to
Hurricane Matthew. Interesting process
to see 11,000 nurses try to get out of
town quickly :-O!
In November I spoke for the Nursing
Management Congress and am pleased
to note that they have asked me to
present next year on Faith Community
Nursing! That would be a first for that
group.
The first week of Lent found me
headed home to Indy on a non-stop from

have brought to your faith families
while investing in your own spiritual
growth.
I focused on my family…all of them
from the Philippines to Vancouver BC to
the U.S. and how lucky we are that we
remain connected.
I focused on what a gift God has
given me to speak to nurses and share
where we are similar while honoring our
diversity. I am thankful that this gift
has allowed me to meet so many
wonderful men and women who share
our passion for helping others
I sat back, took a breath and smiled
some more. I remember starting out
lamenting that I was terribly behind in
newsletters to you and ending the trip
grateful for finding bliss in a
bulkhead seat.
The feeling of letting go has
continued. My husband and I took a
week to celebrate our 40th anniversary
and I stayed AWAY from the computer
(big accomplishment for me). We took
time to visit a friend the weekend
BEFORE Christmas and I didn’t fret
that I had “too much to do”.
We enjoyed a wonderful Christmas
in Albuquerque with our middle son
and daughter in love.
I am committed to keeping God front
and center and letting the other “stuff”
keep its rightful place in my priorities.
You never know…I just might sign
up for another bulkhead seat again……
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY
NEW YEAR
Know that you are loved!
Blessings,
Faith

I’ve approached you because your institution, in the past, has provided the Foundations of Faith Community Nursing course. I felt the best place to begin to market this grant would be with new Faith Community Nurses just as they come out of the course. Could you please use whatever marketing tools are available to you to spread the word about this new foundation? I want to get the word out to as many organizations as possible with the hope that more Health Ministries and Parish Nurse/Faith Community Nurse Programs will get a much-needed boost from these grants. Thanking you, in advance, for your assistance. For further information, please refer to our website at www.williamswishes.org. Teresa Keller, RN, FCN Executive Director William’s Wishes 717-329-8507
I am writing for the purpose of introducing you to William’s Wishes – a foundation for the promotion of Health Ministry. The lives of many people are touched and improved by the care given by Health Ministries and Parish Nurses/Faith Community Nurses. As Executive Director of William’s Wishes (www.williamswishes.org), I have been a Parish Nurse for over 15 years and have discovered that funding is the greatest stumbling block for an organization to develop and sustain a Health Ministry. I have also seen first-hand the difference that a Health Ministry can make within a non-profit organization and the community in which it is located. For this reason, William’s Wishes seeks to help fund these programs via its Hands of Health grants. These grants are one-time matching grants of $500-$1000 awarded four times per calendar year.

Humor, once again, may be the best defense you have to any kind of leftover. Think of it as an emotional antacid. When tensions arise from the holiday planning or holiday crowding, (in your living room), try reaching for some quiet time with the Sunday funnies. How about one of those silly holiday movies that make you laugh and groan and laugh again? You can also say to Aunt Mildred’ “Let’s play ‘I love Lucy episodes on you tube,” while you both do the dishes. Either she will love it or she will leave the room. Either way you win. Most important, learning to forgive yourself and chuckle at your humanity helps deal with the leftover blues.
November 15th is National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day. You can then prepare the space for leftovers without over crowding. Clean out and make room in your emotional refrigerator (where you get nurtured) for more humor, laughter, and joy, especially around this time of year. Take a daily dose of mirth as a re-laxative. It can prevent hardening of the attitudes.
Nowadays, I have Thanksgiving at our home early in the holiday week. It helps our stepfamily and my brother’s family attend to the other 4 holiday dinners. We have sushi and Italian beef, and a veggie platter in the shape of a turkey.
Laughs, jokes and humorous story telling are really the main course. And we always have plenty leftovers of joy.
Thanksgiving blessings of Gratitude, Humor, Laughter, Mirth and Joy,
Debra Joy Hart RN BFA CLL (Fall 1997 class)
About 5 years ago, my brother and his family lived without a refrigerator. They had 2 ice chests with frozen jugs of water that they had to replace about every other day. They made the kids do that. And what prompted them to this 17th century way of living? Leftovers! Leftovers? Yes, leftovers were one of the reasons they gave up their refrigerator. It wasn’t the only reason, but it’s the one that stuck out in my mind. November is filled with national “food” days. There is Candy Day, Deviled Egg Day, and Cashew Day (which goes with the fact that it is National Peanut Butter Lover’s Month.). November includes “Cookie Monster’s” birthday and the day that William Tell took a bow and arrow and shot an apple off his kid’s head. (NOTE: Parents, this is not legal.)
Halloween candy that was hidden under the bed has now been found by a younger sibling. Aunties and Grandmas are making fruitcakes and cupcakes, oodles of noodles, cookies and tortes, candy wreathes and three story gingerbread houses and last but not least…..there is Thanksgiving. People from the good ol’ U.S. of A. gobble up 690 million pounds of turkey each Thanksgiving. I have no idea how many pounds of stuffing, mash potatoes, yams or cranberry sauce/relish are made. I do know there will be leftovers.
Food is not the only leftover. There are left over people lying on your sofa, left over rude cousins that don’t know when to go home and there are leftover dishes and arguments as to whom or what will do the dishwashing. There is leftover trash outside created by city wildlife. Leftovers can be so overwhelming. What’s a person to do?
Even though this is LATE, it remains…
Something to make you smile
